IMO, this alone should warrant a refund. 2- mark outright lied when he stated that it was in "perfect mint condition". just looking at it proves this to be false. i've also learned that he lied to me and others about the the offers he was receiving for it, thereby using deception to drive up the price.. at my request, he agreed to send it to me by registered mail, and offered to include it at his expense. the day he mailed it he wrote and said it was sent by registered mail that day, but a week later i received an unregistered parcel. the packaging was very flimsy too. i feel he was very careless in sending a record i paid hundreds of $ for. when i expressed my dissatisfaction with it, he said he would organise a refund asap. the following day he tells me he was selling the record for a friend, and his friend already had my money and would not accept that i wanted a refund. that was the last email i have received from him 2 weeks ago despite having written him a few times since then urging him to correct this situation. early on when i asked him how he obtained the item, he stated "my copy was given to me by alex". now that i've seen his april 20th posting on this list selling other orb items, i can only assume that he has knowledge of the orb releases and therefore should have known that "assassin" was not a remix of u2's numb. mark has claimed to me that he is a "reputable" dealer. if that is true, i wouldn't be writing this. from my experience, i would not recommend anyone to deal with this individual. get references and check them out before sending money to any stranger on the net. i certainly will from now on. I mean, I'm pretty sure that most of us listen to Orb BECAUSE they're instrumental--no b.s. about sex and cars and other garbage. I mean, I am a huge fan of Jean-Michel Jarre, Virgin-era Tangerine Dream, Synergy, David Arkenstone (although he DOES have a few vocal tracks that work quite nicely), Vangelis, etc.--BECAUSE they're instrumental. If I want vocals with electronic, I'd listen to New Order, DEVO, Skinny Puppy, and the Pet Shop Boys--and I DO listen to those groups. However, artists who start out as instrument should generally stick with instrumentals...to do otherwise usually results in laughable failure. That's NOT to say that I don't appreciate taking risks...but when you KNOW it's going to be disastrous, why bother? Again, however, I'll mention Perpetual Dawn--Solar Flare and Solar Youth mixes...Perpetual Dawn is one of my all-time favorite Orb tracks, which DOES have vocals...which are VERY nicely done. I just have this horrible feeling that if they DID try to add vocals on a more frequent basis, they'd end up sounding horribly like Ministry or some other shit...and before all you Ministry fans get pissed at that, just listen to their "With Sympathy" album, and I think you might agree with me.... I've never been screwed by Lakeshore, and I've never been screwed by Mark S-Walker. At any rate, if anyone's wondering why Mark might not be defending himself, he sent a message to IDM last month saying that he would be gone for ten days starting 6 June, coincidentally the same day we heard about this. There was an additional testimonial from someone on IDM (Lance C. McGannon ) who probably qualifies as one of the ten most-respected members of that list (I know I hold him in high regard). I won't quote him, but you can ask him about his dealings with Mark over the last two years. I agree, most of this behavior regarding the test pressing sounds extremely bad. But I'd still like to hear both sides of the story. - -- Adam J Weitzman "Compared with Michael [Jordan], NewsEdge Corporation death and taxes are variables." http://www.newsedge.com - Bob Ryan, The Boston Globe http://www.newspage.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jun 1998 09:41:11 -0400 (EDT) From: "Benjamin L. I agree to some of this. I don't think that the Orb really needs lyrics. One of the things I truly love about them is their ability to speak to you without being so explicit as to use words... And they do so quite well. On the other hand, I know LX is getting on some (he must be in his late 30's by now) and I'm sure the man is looking for a more stable source of income than the ocassional unstable DJ fees and/or RARE orb tours. I'm sure Island gives him a nice paycheck, but I doubt its huge. We have to keep in mind that this is what these guys do FOR A LIVING. Maybe they're ready to start preparing for retirement (lets hope this doesn't happen for a long time). Maybe not.... > However, artists who start out as instrument should generally > stick with instrumentals...to do otherwise usually results in > laughable failure. That's NOT to say that I don't appreciate taking > risks...but when you KNOW it's going to be disastrous, why > bother? I totally hate to use them as an example due to the recent outrage by old fans (such as myself), but a good example of this is The Prodigy... Listen to experience. Not a single non-sampled vocal. This is not to say that this was representative of their live shows, but of their album material. Fast forward to the Fat of the Land (hate that name, still)... Some great songs, some of the best have lyrics. Now to say that they sold out is sort of a null debate. The musical changes the group unterwent between Experience and "The Jilted..." album were just as immense as the ones they underwent between Fat and Jilted. Whatever their reasons, they're THE BANDS REASONS. Who are we to judge as long as they come out with good music. I feel the same with the orb. I doubt that any time soon they'll take on a full-time vocalist, but in the past has the orb stuck to the previous paradynes they set for themselves? Hells no. And I'm shocked at you guys lack of faith in LX to produce decent vocals is vocals are what he's into at the moment! > Again, however, I'll mention Perpetual Dawn--Solar Flare and Solar > Youth mixes...Perpetual Dawn is one of my all-time favorite Orb > tracks, which DOES have vocals...which are VERY nicely done. Ministry is another great example of this. How well have they stuck to playing similar music? Not at all! (Psalm 69 Vs. A mind is a terrible thing to taste, anyone?). They "alienate" their audience practically with every new album they put out. I'll follow the orb no matter what changes they undergo because I think they're musical visionaries. I have serious doubts as to their ABILITY to put out bad material. In closing, I'd like to say that the entire preceeding message was a silly and useless reprimand as the orb has not put out a vocals-included album and would like to respectfully request that this argument be put to rest. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jun 1998 16:50:10 +0300 (EEST) From: Dan Subject: Re: (orb) Alienation On Tue, 9 Jun 1998, Benjamin L.
