But before, during and after the hype, = it continues to plod along as it always has. (Well, mildly slowed since = an 'anti-postering' ordinance was passed a few years ago.) The trend = where suddenly all of these 'Seattle' bands started appearing with Geffen and Warner Bros. contracts and the like was no different than the emergence = of any local scene into the 'mainstream'. Remember Athens GA? = Minneapolis MN? Record companies, like any industry, are about supplying you with a = demand to fulfill their supply, and often the sudden focus on a particular = local scene works perfectly for this. That 'new' sound that they want, is = usually just another repackaging of a tried and true formula. 'Grunge' was = nothing more than heavy metal played in a flanel shirt and cutoffs rather than Spandex=AE and hairspray. Most of the bands that benefitted from this attention were no less deserving than their butt-rock predecessors, and = a few were actually among some of the better bands in rock history. But if you'd rather still be = listening to Warrant and Guns-N-Roses screaming from the car next to you at the = stop light, by all means... The fad is the 'alternative' bullshit. Just like cornfed whiteboys in Muncie Indiana sporting four-finger rings and dropping gangsta = rhymes about life in the hood, most of your garden variety alterno-gomer is = just sporting an image they've seen on MTV for the past few years. Entercom = is a huge media organization that runs several 'alternative' or 'new music' stations around the USA, each stricly formulatic; they've had no small = role in the propagation of this image. They are indicitive of the entire industry: sell the people to the idea. Of course the record company = execs are going to have too much power getting such-and-such crappy bands on = the radio because they generally own the stations too. And in case you're missing it, the cery same thing is happening to electronic music. The evil glass is focusing the sunlight on us. So = hold tightly to your orb. Grasp desperately at your Banco. The evil glass is focusing the sunlight on us. So hold Very true, but.... One of the saving factors of a lot of "electronica" is that it doesn't fit nicely into the radio format. Most folks, as a whole, just aren't used to 8 minute songs -- esp. when those are the short versions! There will be some spotlights, there will be some radio hits (e.g. "Children" by Robert Miles) but the tried and true ambient/trancey stuff won't survive in the top40 marketplace. They simply lack too many of the formula things needed to do well. This also is the reason 45's are always much shorter time wise per side than 33's. I said: >> I suppose what i mean to say is how are they enforced and what are >> the consequences for breaking them? Ok that i can understand, but what i want to know is in terms of U.F.Off what would happend if the Orb didn't follow these new BPI rules. Would they be pulled from the shelves, not sold in 'reputable' shops, burned in a cd-burning fire or just not be able to be rated in BPI charts? If the Orb had done it, it would have been a much better remix album. There is no information on the cd of who put it out. A record store I frequent has CDR's of all the Trance remixes of Floyd, and they usually go for $20-25. There are two key factors to look for. First, is the video a T-120? They were originally released on a T-60 (T-60 and T-30 are professional quality videos that are not readily available and are more expensive). The sticker on the top of the tape should not look like a computer print out. Second, on the spine of the case, you should see the logo NTSC or PAL as a sticker, not part of the actual sleeve. If it is not a sticker, you have just purchased pirated merchandise. A limited edition release came with a bonus one track cd of the entire audio portion. Both releases came in a plastic case (mine is black without the two cylinders that prevent the video from shifting). Appropriate mastering of the disc must also take place to ensure the grooves are far enough apart to adequately separate the program material of adjacent grooves (bleed over and pre-echo). This possible additional spacing between grooves AND 45 RPM all make for shorter records -- not to mention that everyone tries to master vinyl discs so as to stay as far away from the distortion-prone center of the disc by keeping the cuts short. And finally, there have been 45 RPM full-length *albums* in modern times. I used to have a couple of Klaus Schulze LPs that were 45 RPM. /*-----------------------------------------------------------------*/ CD on now: Eno -- =93Here Come The Warm Jets=94 (EG/Virgin) CD on next: FSOL -- =93Lieforms CD-EP" (Virgin) /*-----------------------------------------------------------------*/ - -Gary H- ghenders@gary-hendershot.com Houston, TX USA # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Aug 1998 03:14:21 EDT From: Subject: (orb) Bauhaus for sale...... Oooh! I know! I know! The mix is *not* by the Orb. But it could be called a "tribute" to them. Clearly, Franz is/was a fan and did it in what could be called the Orb "style," and, if I'm not mistaken (I haven't listened to it in a while), there may be samples taken from/shared with Little Fluffy Clouds. JG PS - While we're slightly off-topic, does anyone have or can anyone get the Young Gods singles for "Kissing the Sun" and "Gasoline Man?" I've been looking for these forever... - -----Original Message----- From: Benjamin L. May [mailto:benmay@cuccfa.ccc.columbia.edu] Subject: (orb) young gods? Sorry to post this to the list, but Dan Kelly: I just tried to respond to your email, and for some reason it bounced. This didn't happen last time, and I sent it to the same email address. To answer your question, the only non-album or non- single Orb that I have at the moment is "Plateau (of Normality)" from The Serious Road Trip 3cd compilation, "Majetic (Millwall mix)" from Trance Europe Express 2cd compilation, and "Cocksville USA" from an Axiom compilation.
