I, at least, would be too lazy to go out & buy it if I already had an mp3 tho. ant # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Aug 1998 16:58:34 -0600 From: DJ Orbette Subject: Re: (orb) MP3 Stop ! Well, good for you, I might be crazy, but if I'm considering myself an Orb fan, so I don't buy everything with the Orb printed on it (unlike Smiley :)) but everything with new Orb music tracks. Some of us are students or living in a place where it's hard to find rare stuff... But mostly releases are interesting, like the PWEI 2CD Remix (with a cool Youth remix) or the CAN Sacrilege (with System 7 and excellent Jah Wobble remixes). If you're in the Orb list, you could say you REALLY like their music. I'm not on a music mailing list, if I just like some tracks from the group. (but also, you don't have to know everything about the group to be there. It's not a cult group completely) OK, I'm crazy because I've seen them all over the world (almost), and I'm trying to find all of their releases (thanks to Smiley, it's almost done). An MP3 for me is like doing a near-perfect copy of their tracks. It's not tape quality, it's better. When Smiley put a little bit of the Reefer Song, it was cool because it was like a cinema trailer. I wanted more... I think we should only do MP3 of promo tracks, live tracks (if Andy & Co are OK), things that are really rare. Hey, if it's too expensive or hard to find, you can try second hand stores... And Ant is right, Sun Electric's Present is a great album, although my favorite is their live ambient LP. JCFromParis (waiting for the flame) On now : PWEI - Babylon (Loop guru babylon 1 dub fire mix) PS : Hey DJ Orbette, I wasn't accusing especially you ! # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Aug 1998 09:40:29 +0100 From: RFitzgerald@vision-consulting.com Subject: (orb) Young Gods > PS - While we're slightly off-topic, does anyone have or can anyone get the > Young Gods singles for "Kissing the Sun" and "Gasoline Man?" What I had for a while was the Kissing the Sun CD, which has about 9 versions of Kissing the Sun and is well worth the while. There are a couple of dodgy tracks (like the hard acid house mix, which is just too simply done; basic acid house, with a hard core beat, and kissing the sun mixed in!), but some of the stuff is excellent! the two skinflowers 12"s are great, one is really wacked out, and the other one is just a collection of skinflowers along with some rarities (I think "Did you miss me?", the Gary Glitter song is on that one - from their first album). Check out www.younggods.com for better info! Some people out there in orb land, should check out their Heaven Deconstructed album, which was written nearly completely by Franz (the main man in the band - the LX of the band, he remains constant with a vision and the other guys shape it for him). Heaven Deconstructed is the Artist name as well as the title (but it has a Young Gods sticker on it, and no cover!!! Just a jewel case with a sticker saying "from the young gods" (or something like that). Its very minimal in parts, very odd in parts and sounds bloody great! Ok, I'll stop ranting about TYG, as I am a serious fan (seen them play belfast a couple of times - even got sorted out with an impromptu interview with them after the gig, I think they worked out we weren't musical journalists pretty quickly, but still let use drink their complimentary beer-fridge dry and ask them loads of silly questions! Franz is a serious Castaneda fan by the way! So a mate of mine and him talked misticysm and philosophy with him for ages! It doesn't go against the letter, if they have no other formats (7", cassette). It wouldn't go against the letter even if it did in fact, as the record companies can actually make as many formats as they like: but they have to identify which 3 (or whatever number the BPI chooses this month) will count towards the chart sales. It doesn't go against the spirit, as the intention is to prevent multiple sales by excessive numbers of variants of releases. If Garbage only have 3 formats, then they are abiding by those rules in spirit and letter. It just so happens the formats are all compact disks, in different packaging and with varying tracks. The one thing that is really wierd about this whole thing is, manufacturers like Sony and Toshiba, are currently working on devices that will play these. At the moment I'll call them MP3 Walkman's. From what I read, It's going to be really interesting. You'll have an MP3 player device that has so much memory (the more memory it has, the more tracks I can hold in it before having to load in more). You will be able to hook it up to your stereo or computer and download or record new tracks into your MP3 Player. Also there has been talk of a sort of vending machine. Imagine it like this, you walk into your local record store or or best buy or wherever you find your music, and walk up to some kiosk like machine. you go through touch screen menus looking for music you like, find something, then listen to a couple clips or videos, or maybe read the reviews on the screen. Then select all the song you want, slide a couple dollars into the machine, and download the tracks into your player. You then own a copy of those songs in your Mp3 player. but one thing is going to be different than the current mp3's there will be improved codecs, brining near CD quality sound (notice i say near). and most importantly Digital watermarks, and encryption. Don't expect the record labels to let you walk of with a song that they can't earn thier money from. The song you download will be encrypted with a key unique to each player. When you plug in your player the encoder will read your devices key, and encrypt the sound file so that it will only play on your player. Also they will be able to set pay for play limits and so on. So if the artist wanted to they can make you pay a $1 for you to play one song, that will be unplayable after the first play. Any time you want to play it again, you have to pay more. This is wierd, I know.. But it's coming donw the pipe, same thing is happening with DVD's. Currently there are systems that are similar to this, but don't have the hardware yet. Check out liquid audio, and AT&T's A2B music. In a way i think its a good idea, It's a way for an artist to distribute their songs without a lot of middlemen, therefore a band could put songs up on the web, and can make money from them directly without having to press CD's Get to distributors get into stores and so on. But on the other hand.. it's very inconveiniet for the listener sometimes. I'd like to hear what people think about this coming technology... Would you buy something like that? Or would you still Download your MP3's from hacker sites, or meanwhile scrounge through Used CD bins hoping to find a wayward otu of print CD. One thing that looks great about something like this... Nothing could go out of print! Well, I can see what you're talking about with singles. I don't like buying CDs with which I won't even listen to half the songs. The Can and Gong Orb appearances are on remix albums though! So, you're not actually getting any of the original songs, it just depends if you like the other remixes. I wasn't too interested in the remixers on the Gong album, plus it was a bit pricey. On the other hand, I can reccomend the Can remix album. In addition to Orb, it has System 7, Carl Craig, and lots of other people who I haven't even heard of but put in well done and interesting mixes. If I remember correctly, it was low priced too. And neither of the original groups are exactly pop superstars anyway... =) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Aug 1998 14:49:20 -0500 From: David Barkhymer Subject: Re: (orb) Re: Can and Gong... If you ever used a cassette to make a 'mixtape' to drive across country to, or try to win the heart of that 9th grade babe you were in a class with, or to show your pal what real techno was like (vs. all the pop) then you're as guilty as anyone who ever grabbed an mp3 from an ftp. Just because the quality now parallels that of the original does not make the action any different. Of course, the organization and seeding of those servers is considerably more malignant. Personally, I do not listen to mp3s very often, because of storage issues. (I need all the drive space I can horde for my own music, not someone else's.) Occasionally, though, there are tracks that are rare and cause me much distress trying to find in record shops (yah, I'm one of those people that thinks that paying $17 US for a $.05 disc is flat out fucked). Wouldn't you ask a pal to make a tape for you of some obscure song? For that matter, wouldn't you ask that pal to copy the disc if you couldn't afford the $17? Maybe you wouldn't. I would (if I couldn't afford the disc, which I can...so I don't :) In the future, some sort of encryption routine for media making it impossible to copy? I doubt it, because a little bit of piracy is good for all. Just ask the CDR/digital recording media manufacturers (who, you'll notice, also happen to be inseperable from parent companies, the large media organizations themselves) who easily come out on the black side of this financial equation. You think they don't know the primary uses of their products? Please. $400 bucks for a drive that, while chewing up $1.50 blanks like Doublemint, copies off a disc that cost less than $2 (including studio production). The industry needs it to be 'inconvenient' to copy, not impossible. Of course, they've got an image to worry about... (Please don't tell me it's already on the way. They've had plans for this stuff since the beginning, and all of them to date have failed....watch DIVX die too.) Yeah, the artist gets screwed. Um...what else is new? The beauty here: they were screwed before you ever showed up! They were probably stuck with a shitty record deal which, after everything gets worked out, leaves them with a couple of grand, some new gear, and a shiny new drug habit. So if your entire collection could spin NY, London, and Tokyo for a week straight, maybe you should think about a wipe, cause you're a major ass. But if you've got a couple dozen mp3's that go into occasional rotation, don't start slitting your wrists from guilt just yet. I'm usually all wrong isaac ps: I use that perfect drug single as a coaster. ;) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Aug 1998 19:25:29 -0700 From: Steve Shah Subject: Re: (orb) MP3 Stop ! Do I feel guilty for downloading MP3's? I would if I knew I could walk town to any music shop and get the CD. Can't afford it? Too bad for me. Mixtapes, that's a whole mess which I've seen explode into a holy war too many times. I know better than to comment, but... Most indie labels don't seem to mind mixtapes too much as far as I've seen. They do get a lot more annoyed with mix CD's though. A friend of mine who put out two mix CD's of trance ended up pulling both of them from shelves because several companies got pissed with him. Introducing someone to new music with a tape -- if they don't like the music than the tape gets overwritten or killed while sitting on a dashboard in 100+ degree weather. If they like it, new music gets purchased which is good for the artists. Is it going to stop? Nope. Its just a question of being able to live with yourself and your own sense of ethics. - -Steve - -- ______________________________________________________________________________ Steve Shah (sshah@cs.ucr.edu) | SysAdmin/Coder/Gabbernaut/DJ/Writer/Minister http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~sshah | We're not dropping out, we're infiltrating. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Beating code into submission, one operating system at a time... # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 14:43:19 +0800 From: Kael Driscoll Subject: (orb) the geep well well well :) after all this geep discussion, I went home to find my copy of the NE compilation... it took me two weeks of searching to locate it! finally I found it hidden far away in the unloved records section... Its strange how now it sounds very obviously like the Orb, whereas four years ago it sounded like "the geep"! Now, I am thinking that there may be a few Orb completists out there who would like this double album for their collection (even though there is only one orb track)... am I right? I don't think you can go wrong recommending 30.7.94 to someone, it'll prolly be better than whatever else you were going to buy. its the perfect chill out / talk / study album (as good as Thurs Afternoon but way less minimal). I haven't played it for someone yet who didn't end up liking it alot. ant # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Aug 98 22:56:12 -0500 From: nhetrick Subject: Re: (orb) MP3's and the future of them. I wouldn't be into this sort of technology for my own listening, simply because it's not as flexible as having a disc in your own player. I want to be able to play a track back many times, or just play sections of it to figure out some part in a mix, sample bits from it if I wish, etc. And since I'm an electronic musician, sound quality is important to me.... >One thing that looks great about something like this... My 2 cents, 'cos you (Sean) asked for 'em.... ;-) Neil Hetrick nhetrick@idsonline.com p.s. - for some Orb content, let me add that I think the Orb contribution to Gong's "YouReMixed" album is one of their best remixes yet -- the rhythm is slightly odd yet funks well, and there's plenty of good electro-style bass. onnow: Flare (a.k.a.
