I just saw a really cheezy ad for a Depressed Mode "greatest hits" album. Information Society is even releasing a greatest hits and they just released a new album last year with the intent to continue on the Cleopatra label. For example, I remember during my freshman year in college (1988), people were into the whole "summer of love" garbage (which was when? 1967? 68? 69?)-- basically twenty years earlier. NOW, it's 1998 (ten years later), so people should be nostalgic (based on the prior trend) for the mid 1970s--and some people are. BUT, for the past several years, there's been a big 1980s nostagia, too...jumping the "nostalgia gun" by a whole 10 years! Essentially, if this trend continues at this rate, it won't be long (reasoned Zappa) before we are nostalgic for the prior year...and eventually the present time. Basically, society will come to a standstill, and civilization will collapse as a result: death by nostalgia. I think Douglas Coupland refers to it as "legislated nostalgia," for example: "How can I be nostagic for the 1960s, when I don't even remember being there?" I am totally down with them and to see the makers give everyone their props (like PE = and NWA, and the De La crew) in an intelligent and respectful manner set off a joyful quake to my core. First, I'd like to re-introduce myself. I was on the list last year and the year before, but had to unsubscribe for a bit. I doubt many of you will remeber my pointless prose and claims to fame (around the time of 'Orblivion', I interviewed Alex and Andy for my - -then- radio show Midnight In Europe). Anyway, I'm back. Right, on to the main business of this mail (I can hear you all muttering"about time"!). A couple of weeks back I was on Placement at Muzik Magazine, the UK's finest dance music magazine (arguably). While I was there I managed to get hold of a promo tape for U.F.Off - the first CD to be precise. What can I say? Basically, U.F.Off contains some of the worst mixing between tracks that I've ever heard. SOme of you may disagree with me , but "Greatyest Hits" albums should not be mixed (it makes using specific tracks or home editing on to tapes / CDRs / whatever impossible..). Most of the tracks are also radio edits, which is also a bit annoying. The strangest thing on it (apart from the inclusion of "Pi") is a track called "MIcky Mars", which I guess is fairly recent - unreleased? It features drum and bass, dub bass, strange noises and an extended sample from Enigma's "Return To Innocence" (cut up and rearranged to sound less like the original). It certainly ISN'T the best track Alex has recorded. Anyway, while I was in the office I also listened to the Danny Tenaglia remixes of "Little Fluffy Clouds" that have just been pressed white label by Island in the UK. They are quite good, in his deep house style. Not much like the original "LFC", though the Rikki Lee Jones sample remains. There also seems to be a bit from "Into The Fourth Dimension" on the end. There doesn't seem to be many copies of this around, though, so if you see one for a reasonable price snap it up. I failed to steal the 12" from the Muzik office (which was my intention!). Some son of a whore took it away straight after it left the turntable!
