I think this isn't too far off topic, really. I enjoy the orb, but I like other things too.. In fact, the orb led me to check out Eno, Autechre, and many other things. And since we're sharing, let me add that I recently picked up _Plug Research & Development Vol. 1_. I happened across it totally by chance, and I must say...it is some of the best IDM/minimal techno I have ever heard. I am seriously considering buying a turntable just to hear their other releases...I am at a loss to describe the tracks other than to say it's like listening to Orb vs. Autechre with some dance-y techno creeping in at just the right moments. Anyhow, there's my recommendation. Contact me if you're interested, but having problems finding it--I think it may be getting minimal distribution. br # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Nov 1998 23:35:48 -0600 (CST) From: "Mr. Charlie C Ludwig " Subject: Re: (orb) Time for another round! ok.. i gotta do this too.. excuse my bandwagon jumping (and btw.. my tastes always vary, so this is my current list) orb on top of course, but not included.. and no particular order either, because i dont want to take the time.. its too hard :) aphex twin coldcut digable planets a tribe called quest mixmaster morris / irresistible force beastie boys mixmaster mike dj krush tricky and dj soulslinger thats about it.. seems pretty diverse to me, considering i've been listening to quite a bit more hiphop than usual (tribe especially).. i'll take my $.98 change with that ;) charlie # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 02:01:27 -0500 From: Rob Buse Subject: Re: (orb) Time for another round! In the last issue, there's a good interview. I translated for you...at least, I tried. Q : In 97', Orblivion took back the Orb to the dancefloor, back to the source after a period more abstract. Is Uf Off like a bridge between the two ? A : The more important thing is to find a mix between dance music and ambient. We took care of that. It's true that our productions were more brainy (?) since 94'. The Orb is most of the time in a live form that makes dancing the public, sometimes in a trance way. We want to find again these emotions. Since Orblivion and the drum'n'bass influence, we think we achieved that. A long time we were only booked for the chill out, since the beginning, but our two first albums were made for the dancefloor. It stopped after the success of Uf Orb, a major turn in our evolution. With more than 100 000 albums sold in UK, the press, the TV and radio shows, our name was everywhere. The Orb had suddenly a large audience. We didn't want to be the new flavour of the month ! Journalists and majors wanted to sell the Orb by any means necessary, without understanding anything at all. We didn't want to be SO famous so we did some stuff more experimental. Q : Your productions have been compared to the hippie music. Rather strange for an ex-punk, no ? A : Right. Pink Floyd came to see the Orb, but we never saw one of their concerts (laugh). Just kidding. We have respect for them, and for other groups labelled "hippie". Breakthrough artists like Tangerine Dream had their time of glory. "Back side of the Moon" was an in-joke to the Floyd. Q : How can you define your language ? A : Hypnotism is a form of communication. A non-verbal way to send messages. We tried... But I also like words and poetry. Two guests : * Nina Walsh, member of Slab * Aki Omosi, Japanese singer of Freaky Realistic will sing my lyrics on some tracks from the forthcoming album. I thought about it for a long time. "Little Fluffy Clouds" is our most popular track... Q : Is the audience mature enough today to accept musicians and singers ? (Weird question) A : I think so. Our live shows oriented like that really worked. But we don't like to repeat the same thing over and over. Our live shows give a great time for feeling and improvisation. Some years ago, during the Borealis night in Nimes (I WAS THERE ! I WAS THERE !), Simon played bass and he only practiced for a few months. It was a big challenge for him, but he did it nicely. It was one of the 3 greatest Orb live shows. The arena was magical. The atmosphere, incredible. The crowd danced until the top of the arena and we imagined those who couldn't go inside, trying to climb up the walls. 15000 boys and girls together... Q : After the dub style, The Orb is now trying the drum'n'bass... A : It's an incredible music ! Everywhere where I played, in Australia, in USA, the drum'n'bass is huge. It's the first 100% English music. Even the 60/70's beatniks were inspired by American groups. But the D'n'B is not only English, it's also black ! Q : You co-wrote two tracks from the new Thomas Fehlmann album. Is he a big part of the Orb ? A : Of course. He's a friend and one of our floating members. He'll work on our next album, Cydonia, with Vince (Vince ?) Keogh, Nina Walsh, Aki Omosi, Dave Harrow AKA James Hardway and Witchman. The second part of the interview is about the spirituality, and his DJ sets... Let me know if you want to know the end... Hope you understand all the sentences... :) A interview by =8:) Translated by JCFromParis Cydonia seems to be a mythological city in Mars with pyramids... My turn! My turn! I like this game, it's probably the best way I've been turned on to good new music, as it seems that most Orb fans have good taste -- keep 'em coming! OK, these are top 10 airtime in my deck (excluding Orb) over the last couple of months, not my favorite of all time, and not in order. 1. Morcheeba 2. Massive Attack 3. Tricky (by the way, after watching "The 5th Element" for like the 10th time this weekend, I noticed he's got a part in the movie) 4. Sade 5. Getz / Gilberto 6. The Fireman 7. A Tribe Called Quest 8. Ben Harper 9. Saint Etienne 10. KLF (only Chill Out, it puts me to sleep in less than 30 minutes, guaranteed) sorry, I can't stop.... 11. Hooverphonic 12. Witchcraft 13. Mono 14. Drugstore 15. High ho Skidoo here, Thought I'd give my 2 cents in. (Hey everybody's doing it) These bands or artists are not in any order but other than Orb....These are my main 10 influences: 1. Pink Floyd (If it wasn't for them, think of the music we just would not have) 2. The KLF (For me, they brought "rock radio into the nineties and beyond"!!!!!!!!) 3. System 7 ("Wow someone other than Fripp can make a guitar sound like water") 4. Laurie Anderson (What goes on in a mind like this?) 5. Aphex Twin (What really goes on in a mind like this?) 6. Cathrine Wheel (Passionate rock and roll for the 90's...love it...LOVE IT!!!!!) 7. Fleetwood Mac (Pre-Buckingham-Nicks era...When there was a heavy blues influence with Peter Green and Bob Welch) 8. Banco de Gaia (Toby Marks makes records for Floyd fans....He's one as well) 9. The Charlatans/Inspiral Carpets/Stone Roses/Happy Mondays (If I didn't listen to Manc house in the early 90's..I might not have listen to the Orb) 10. Brian Eno (Apollo.......need I say more?...I will....Ambient 1,2,3, etc. etc.) three extra 11. The Verve (I know I might get someone to question this, but I have liked them since 92' and they were the first band I saw live stoned.....they are sonic live.....'Bitter Sweet' does grate, but I can't find a Verve song I don't like) 12. Phillip Glass (If you like great organ sounds.....then he's the man) 13. The Beatles/George Martin (It's all in the recording) Here's a list of ten bands/cd's I've been listening to: (in no order) 1. The Orb (alot of their stuff, since I joined the list) (esp. U.F. Off disc 2) 2. The K.L.F. (just got alot of rare shit) 3. XTC---"Live 1980" (I just got this BBC record that kicks ass) 4. The End of Violence sdtk (great sdtk and a great film as well) 5. Natural Calamity---"Peach Head" (japan band that has buckets o' atmosphere) 6. Swervedriver--"99th Dream" (great album, if you like spacey guitars, this record has em) 7. Kate Bush (could also be on the influence list....I listen to her alot when it's cold) 8. Heatmiser---Mic City Sons (Jumps into a list of best pop records ever, in my opinion) 9. R.E.M. (The new record is great, it's all great!!) 10. Can----"Soundtracks" ("She Brings the Rain" is so beautiful. :) :) ) So there you go-------Sorry my two cents turned into a dollar----no matter--it was fun SKIDOO 'OUT' np Ben Folds Five ----- Naked Baby Photos FUN FUN FUN!!!! # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 13:23:50 -0600 From: John Goelzer Subject: RE: (orb) Time for another round! So I stood up while playing the drums , started raging him , going off the wall....it was excellent...the band telling the crowd to fuck off....fucking beautiful. i was waitin for a barfight between drunk rednecks and my friends . We proceeded to play louder , (maybe they werent hearing us properly , right?)....waiting for bottles to fly at the stage...next time i will have to fit "no fun" in there somewhere.
