It's one of the big five in the psychedelic trance scene (others: Flying Rhino, TIP, Transient, Blue Room). The latest release on Dragonfly is 'Hicksville' by Celtic Cross, which consists of Youth and Simon Posford. Posford is huge in the psy-trance scene (under the name Hallucinogen). He also has a recent CD called, I believe, 'Eclipse,' which is nominally a compilation but is mostly Posford (check out Posford's Twisted Records website). Orb fans should really like the 'Eclipse' record as it segues between ambience, drum&bass, and dub, with incredible production quality. I would vote it my 'best record the Orb never made.' Anyway, Celtic Cross is in the same vein with a bit of acoustic guitar over the top. In a search for parallels, I would describe the sound as like a heavy dub mix of 'Star 6,7,8,9,' which might make sense given Youth's involvement. I just got it and like it a lot. By the way, in New York at least Virgin Megastore is running a big promotion on psy-trance. Celtic Cross is 20% off, plus you get a free full-length psy-trance compilation CD. I'm into the genre and can vouch for the quality of the free CD--it would be worth paying for. Orb fans might also like the new record from Sunkings, which have one track on the free CD (mislabeled by the way, they mixed up the Sunkings with the Slinky Wizard track). Sorry for the non-Orb content but I thought I would plug some music that Orb-heads would like and it did have a Youth connection. One last plug: Kruder & Dorfmeister 'K&D Sessions' is amazing. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Dec 1998 01:51:17 +0200 (EET) From: Dan Subject: (orb) Re: your mail [dragonfly, etc. not quoted] well, its orb content enough since it's related to a past collaborator.. good enough in my book. i just must say that i reeeeally hate psy-trance AND drum&bass, and i'm wondering if i'm alone on this list in that respect.. i got annoyed a little bit with the somewhat d&b-styled beats of a couple orblivion tracks (well, s.a.l.t and the secret track), and i'm really hoping they don't push further in that direction with cydonia, or whatever the final title is. - -dan g # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Dec 1998 19:11:53 EST From: Qube4D@aol.com Subject: Re: (orb) Re: your mail I disagree. I haven't been a fan for all that long. There are Quite a few. One famous one is Dipping into the Cybeworld, which is the Live show at Woodstock '94. I also have one called the Pulsating sound of the Orb, I don't really remember the location and I think it was from some time in '91 ? I also have a DAT copy of the Orb's show in Chicago at the Metro from thier last tour. and a kinda crappy cassete copy of Orb live in Portland during the Happy Happy Joy Joy tour in '95. I'd be happy to make a copy exchange if you have anything of interest to trade... There are numbers of other bootlegs circulating around. There is also Patterns and Textures, which is a legitimate release. It should include a CD copy of the soundtrack, which is a live show from Brixton Academy in '91. And also there is always Orb Live '93. A real good quality, legitimately released 2CD collection of some of the best Orb tunes live. You should be able to pick this one up easily at any decent record store. Sunrise aura of "Pi".. I like that one.... "Pi" has to be one of the Orb's most aggressive tracks ever made (with the exception of No Fun which is actually a cover, so it's diqualified). It's so aggresive, it's been found in movies trailers to Alien Ressurection and others. Don't get me wrong, I love this track... In all it's "Sunrise Aura" Sean # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Dec 1998 07:52:46 -0800 From: Kim Rask Subject: Re: (orb) My Orb is on Fire-Man I just picked up Rushes last night, and have been listening to it almost non-stop. I have to agree with everyone, this album is awesome! It sounds very Orbish and parts of it remind me a bit of the Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour". Samples of it can be heard at www.fire-man.com. Apparently this is their second album; has anyone heard the first? Oh yes, for those of you looking for UFOff, Tower Records in Seattle has both the single and double versions for $18 and $26 each. I haven't been a fan for all that long. Most of them are not live, but instead compilations of unreleased or long out of print material. You can find most of them at http://www.swco.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?orb in Lazlo Nibble's Orb Discography... There were a few more in MP3 formatg from the OAA that were live recordings too. My partner and I buy= UK stuff in Manchester and US stuff in New York. (I live both places...= long story... you'd be sorry you asked.) I paid =A316 for it the first= week it was available-- which is about $26. Except that, being a US= citizen, I can get back some of the VAT I pay when I shop in the UK. I got my copy from Smiley (thanks again!), knowing full well that the double disk may have been released in the states later on at a lower cost.
