There are by now seven volumes of Dark Side of the Moog, all collaborations between Pete Namlook and Klaus Schultze, and Bill Laswell helps out on all but the first two. Some of them are absolute classics. Floydian references continue with the sub-titles (/ track titles) for each CD: 1: Wish You Were There 2: A Saucerful of Ambience 3: Phantom Heart Brother 4: Three Pipers at the Gates of Dawn 5: Psychedelic Brunch 6: The Final DAT 7: Obscured by Klaus For more info, the Fax label discography is at: www.hyperreal.org/musi/labels/fax and there is a review-site for Fax CDs which probably has opinions on some of the DSOTM series: www.2350.org Like all Fax label CDs, these are all limited to 1000 or 2000 copies. Several of the earlier volumes sold out ages ago but not to worry, four (five?) of them have been re-released on the Ambient World offshoot of Fax, and the others are probably recent enough to still be available in their original form. Scott Kimberly Date : 1998/05/09 Forum : rec.music.ambient I was searching for Rickie Lee Jones articles at Deja News and saw some misinformation concerning "Little Fluffy Clouds" by The Orb. The RLJ interview sampled in The Orb's tune is only available as part of a 2 CD promotional box set for "Flying Cowboys" issued by Geffen Records in 1989. The disc is labeled "A Conversation With Rickie Lee Jones." The interviewer is NOT Levar Burton from Reading Rainbow!!!!!! Actually, the interviewer is not credited in the lyric booklet/press release included in the package. We can only assume it is some rock journalist or Geffen publicist as this was released before celebrity interviewers came into fashion. By the way, I read someplace that she sued The Orb over that track because they used her voice without asking her? There it is if anyone cares. - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I have just ordered a copy of the promo set for "Flying Cowboys", and will confirm or deny the veracity of this sample source. I'll of course be truly bummed if I don't get to hear about the skies when she was young, but I'm taking the chance since I've seen a trend lately for this particular promo set to increase in price. I ordered mine from CDcellar.com (they quite reliable) for $35, but there's another place listed in GEMM.com who want over $115 for it. I already had "Electric Counterpoint", so I just _had_ to get the interview disk too.. You know, considering that CD-Rs cost less than $2, and a 2-CD U.F.Off runs at least $20, you really should be offering at least 10-15 CD-Rs. Yeah, yeah, you are offering "rare" stuff (mostly bootlegs), but really, U.F.Off is still in print. If you can't be bothered to pick it up and support the Orb, you could at least make it worth the while of those of us who actually do so to deal with you. :/ Chris (who is continually amazed at how much people think CD-Rs are worth) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Feb 1999 11:18:01 -0600 From: Don Gagen Subject: (orb) What were the skies like when you were young? Someone mentioned a while back that this sample was not from Reading rainbow, but from an interview CD packaged with a promo version of one of her albums. If I didn't know any better I would think it was Lavar as well. As a kid I used to be a reading rainbow junkie and I don't ever remember an episode with the LFC sample or any of the others that are used like the ones where they talk about playing horses and she starts making these crazy horse sounds. I'd really like to clarify this so we can all get it straight. Don "Don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry." D. You're probably thinking of AHEGPBTRFTCOFU (Loving You) and Mimi Ripperton (who actually is credited in the liner notes of the CD, though I think she's still removed) I think it's actually John Stamos' older and less talented brother Richard Stamos who is sampled here. Ummm...wrong. "Deals" like this should be discussed, if not actually denounced, on principle, as well as for practical reasons. (See below.) > for those of you that dont think this is 'supporting' the > orb- screw you. they still get their money from the > purchase. instead of me spending 25 for a new copy, > why cant i trade for other things that people want? That's not a problem. The problem is that you want to trade someone's $25 worth of U.F.Off for your $3 worth of CD-Rs. (Again, see below.) > i suppose you could spend at least $80 tracking down some of > the rare items i will copy, and with that you get the > invaluable liner notes and original plastic. no thanks. > those that still want to complain and tell me that > cdrs are worth $2 (those are blanks folks, its whats on > it that counts) please do so in private so everyone else > doesnt have to read about it. Nope. You posted publicly, and this should be discussed publicly, as this issue will only become more prevalent as CD-R burners increase their market penetration. The more people get away with treating CD-Rs as "almost as good as the real thing", the more we will be seeing this sort of "deal". CD-Rs are *not* the "real thing", and are worth nowhere near as much. (Not only beacause you don't have the inlay, the booklet, and the art on the CD, but also because there is no record company (legitimate or bootleg), distributor, store, publisher, or artist taking their cut of the action.) The thing about CD-Rs is that you are *duplicating* them. You don't have to give up your copy to give someone else a copy. That lowers their value, to somewhere around the cost of a blank and the electricity to run your computer while burning the CD-R (and depreciation, if you are really anal). Admittedly, there is some value attributible to the "rarity" factor, but that is rapidly going out the window, as more and more people get CD-R burners, and more and more people acquire copies of the formerly "rare" material/releases. In short, in the real world, CD-Rs are worth a slight bit more than their cost of production (a grand total of maybe US$2 each), possibly with a slight premium for truly rare material. If you are willing to include good-quality color copies of the inlay and booklet, that would add another US$2-$3, or so. Chris (who gets slightly more sick/pissed every time someone tries to sell/trade him a CD-R of "rare" material for $25 (or $15 (or $10))) P.S. I'd love it if the Orb had a P.O. Box that I could send a bit of cash to, to pay for the bootlegs (both CD & CD-R), and live shows I've acquired over the years. (Of course, Island (and all of the publishers) *might* have a *wee* problem with that sort of thing, for some reason...) ;) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ End of orb-digest V2 #164 *************************
