Here's why.. A suffocating, brownish gas, nitrogen dioxide is a strong oxidizing agent that reacts in the air to form corrosive nitric acid, as well as toxic organic nitrates. It also plays a major role in the atmospheric reactions that produce ground-level ozone (or smog). So if you don't die from lack of air it burns your lungs from the inside out, if it's in strong enough concentrations which is not much, btw!! Of course you meant N20 (Nitrous Oxide), but working in this area (Urban & Industrial Air Pollution) I had to say something so that nobody on this list would do something stupid like trying to inhale NO2. We did expose people to very low levels of it for short periods of an hour to see its effect, though. Was an irritant, but they seemed to recover quickly once allowed to breath fresh air, though as i said this was very low levels in the ppb (parts per billion) range. Sorry for the non-Orb content. Not likely. They probably have a few thousand entries show up and get removed every day if not a lot more. There is no way they could police that kind of thing -- CD-R's are just one of a ton of different things that could be put on sale which is illegal. As long as they listen to complaints and remove sales that are illegal, they'll show they are working in good faith to keep it clean which is often all one needs when dealing with piracy and other related issues. You'll need some sort of sequencing software, say cubase or logic. There's quite OK soundcards for a couple hundred $. After that, get a synth. Buy some second hand thing for 200-300$ to get the feel of it all. Add another 200-300 for a second hand effects unit (reverb, echo, that kind of stuff) and you've got yourself a beginners setup. You'll be wanting a mixer too, but for about 1000$ you'll be able to have loads of fun. You can hook up your turntable, your CD player your tapedeck etc. Sample from 'em, play back through your soundcard... Anyhow, there's loads of sites on the net dealing with this subject. www.dancetech.com is good, with informative articles, although they haven't updated in ages. www.synthzone.com is another, and it's up to date. Check it out. - ----------------------- For the mildly interested, the setup I use is quite minimal although I get really good results with it, mostly because of the EWS: PII 350 MHz with 128Mb 19" monitor (really helps when working tracks in comparrison to a 14 or 15") EWS64XL soundcard (bitch to set up and get running, but then......) Talks about sequencing, bass lines, and the whole deal. It comes with a CD that has cubase on it for the Atari, Mac, and PC. For $25, it's a cheap way to get some lessons from someone. Another tip I hear from raver-types who are starting out is don't get suckered by folks who tell you that you *NEED* a certain type of synth, drum machine, or other such nonsense in order to make anything decent. (Usually this applies to analog freaks.) When you're starting, start cheap and make sure you intend to stick with it before dropping a load of cash. (This advice I give to starting DJ's too.) Given that everyone here probably has onekind of computer or another, look into software and small hardware addons that will help you get started. Usually they will give you the cheapest way to start playing around. Once you know what you're doing, you'll see what part of the equation is limiting you and you can invest wisely -- confident in each piece of gear you buy. I'll add that you don't need to worry about any certain piece of equipment. I've done live shows with about $1500 of equipment, but half of that was my keyboard (yamaha cs1x, beautiful machine, analog feel), but I returned it a week later and got my money back (don't tell). I have a basic drum machine (don't worry about the sounds) and for samples, I use home MiniDisc players. Put a sample on repeat, and voila! You can do it with drum loops and if they are fairly short (under 5-10 secs) they will loop perfectly, (althought trimming them exact is a bitch) The MD unit itself is 250 dollars, and each 75 minutes of stereo sampling time (an MD disc) is as cheap as 2.50 (Best Buy on sale). Go to a pawn shop, and look for any used guitar effects pedals, or rack mount units (I got a nice rack-mount flanger digital delay reverb for 80 bucks) Get some pedals, and then run your samples through them. Run your drum machine through two or three pedals, and you'll get a sound that nobody else has! My cheasy bass bloops (rhythm, not drum) actually sounds like an upright bass when played though a 30 dollar octoplus (lowers the pitch of the sound) pedal. of course, this really only works when you are doing looser type music. Organic techno, ambient, or in my case, (hehehe) improvised electro-noise techno. Yeah, I'm one of those bastards that upon noticing the crowd dancing, cuts the beat out of the mix, or flanges it so much that it's just noise. This is 10 times the dose needed to stop you from coughing, not 10 times the dose needed to get you high. I based using 10 pills on my body weight and the Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide FAQ (http://www.frognet.net/dxm/contents.html). DXM is a drug for which taking 300mg, the amount in 10 of the Drixoral Cough Caps, is perfectly safe. Unless you happen to wiegh like 60 pounds. :) Take a look at the FAQ, it addresses the issues of tissue damage, even to the liver, kidneys, etc. Besides, not counting herb, any drug you take to make you high is going to take some kind of toll if you overuse it! When you say "these meds" which ones are you talking about specifically? No offense, but read up on the stuff before you make some gross overgeneralization. Personally, I've eaten an entire box of the Cough Caps dozens of times to no ill effect whatsoever. Just be careful if you use the stuff NOT to take any of the cough remedies that list anything other than Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide (usually abbreviated Dextromethorphan HBr) in the active ingredients section. That is, if you were to eat more than 3 or 4 of the Drixoral Cough and Cold caplets, you'd be in serious trouble. The amount of Acetaminophin (tylenol) and/or guaifenesin could put you at serious risk. ORBULLETINS # help is available by emailing "info orbulletins" to majordomo@xmission.com. # We're now on the web at http://www.theorb.com greetings orbsters.....as promised, here's some info on the new orb album! i went over to see andy on thursday evening, and listened to the 'first edits' for the new album. these are NOT the final mixes and tracklistings, but are pretty much what will turn up on the album. the album is still most likely to be called 'cydonia' but this still has to be confirmed. i listened to these tracks: - - Terminus - - Jam On Yer Honey - - Once More - - Ralf - - Promis - - Bicyles & Tricycles - - Turn It Down - - Yungle - - Ghostdancing - - A Mile Long Lump of Lard - - Freely Wheely two tracks have to be dropped to get it down to a single album. one will be 'bicyles and tricycles' (co-written by Vince, who is Lewis Keough's cousin), and the other is down to 'jam on yer honey' and 'freely wheely'. 'freely wheely' will probably STAY on the album, as it's one of lx's favourite tracks. the dropped tracks will turn up as b-sides on singles. the first single will be 'once more'. it features vocals from a japanese singer called Aki. she used to be in a band called Freaky Realistic that some uk-based listers may remember. anyway, it's a BRILLIANT track. the record company radio pluggers are going mad for it, and i can see it going top five EASILY. andy thought i would hate it, but i didn't. it's great. PLUS - andy is going into the studio with JIMMI CAUTY to do another mix of it on tuesday.... the second single will be 'ghostdancing' and features vocals from Nina Walsh of Sabrettes fame. the mix i heard was not as immediate as is 'once more' but it would be edited differently for a single release. it's an ethereal sounding track, and nina sounds surprisingly like bj=F6rk in places= =2E my personal favourite (on first listen) was 'yungle' - as in jungle. this is a collaboration with John 'Witchman' Roome, although the version i heard is apparently a LONG way from how it started. anyway, it's completely mental and all over the place, and i LOVED it.
