To make this Orb related, Love and Rockets sampled the lads for a song called "Ugly" from Love and Rockets' "Hot Trip to Heaven" release. Then, that quiet "Sweet FA" number. But, has anyone heard the new Love and Rockets, "Lift"? Obviously, purists may turn up their noses (I hope it doesn't rain, or do I?). Get this by all means!!! If you came into "alternative" via bands like Echo and the B-men, Jesus and Mary Chain, etc...but are still with it enough to know what's what, then get "Lift" now. It's got what you like about techno, and...and...AND...its Love and Rockets!!! Oh yeah, and it just spun to a stop in my cd player for about the 30th time in less than a week. So I ended up downloading the mp3 after I read the nasty reviews and I've come to the conclusion that you're all on crack. Seems like a different/new sound for the orb but did you hear the way they brought in that whopass bassline?? Or how memorizing the vocal loop is for the last minute or so? Although the vocalist sounds a little weak, I think the song in general kicks. I've listened to it about 4 times now and have found myself humming it a few times. Whoa...an Orb song you can hum along to.

The bass line is sweet, and the overall presentation of the samples and loops are a real groove. I'm not to happy with the vocals, but hey I'll take what I can get. I think this new direction the Orb is taking is for the better, finally they are back to their cutting edge style, from the early 90's. I can't wait till the full release and the other singles appear. As a long time Orb fan, I would have to say this song is perfect in the progression of their music style. In checking Lazlo's discog I noticed "some tracks mislabled". I was wondering which tracks were mislabled as in comparing them I could not find errors. Since I have the space, I wanted to present a hokey idea. Please remember you have a delete key, thank you. How difficult would it be to book the ORB? I mean if all of the listmates were to pool their resources, would we be able to see the ORB perform a special 'fans only' show? Maybe an extended set or something. In my mind that seems to be the ultimate goal of the list, I could be wrong however. It honestly sounded like a good idea seeing as certain people have close ties with the band. (well, technically they were releasing music before 82, but it hadn't progressed to the "electronic" point you'd consider to "start" techno... it was just "cheese-pop" until mid-late 80's) in the late 80's, richie hawtin and jeff mills really lead the way in the "new wave" of detroit techno to keep it alive ... and many might think "detroit techno" only goes back to the early 90's, but it really does go back to the early 80's > But I guess you're correct in saying that Detroit is the > birthplace of modern techno...the whole "house" scene, > I guess.... :-) house was actually born in chicago ... it was originally called "chicago house" and shortened to "house" when its popularity spread. Not a rarity by any stretch of the imagination, but it's taking up room in my cd bin.... Anyway, is there anyone in The Netherlands who is looking for a copy of this? The reason I ask, is that there is an electronic duo known as Wavestar (from England) who released an album on the now-defunct Audion label back in 1986 or 1987. The label went under soon after, taking with it its entire catalog of outstanding electronic music. Some titles, such as the entire Synergy backcatalogue, have been subsequently rereleased. Wavestar's first album, _Moonwind_ has also been rereleased, but unfortunately is not available in North America, except via import. The record label/distributor is known as Groove Unlimited, I believe, and is located in The Netherlands. For me to purchase this outright would be more hassel than it's worth, after paying for currency conversion, insured postage, etc., so I figured I have this 2cd Orb album lying around...and if anyone in the Netherlands (or elsewhere in Europe) can obtain the Wavestar cd easily, and is interested in trading it for the Orb set...well.... I also have an extra Toxygene cd5 (U.S.) which I could through in as a bonus, which probably wasn't readily available throughout Europe (although I *could* be mistaken).... The Wavestar cd sells for $17 U.S. or so, plus postage--a total of about $20, which ain't too bad...but by the time I get it converted over (via an international money order, or whatever), the price would go up almost an additional 50%.... Can anyone help out here? :-) Apologies to the list for this shameless request, but I'm desperate to get that cd.... Also, if anyone ever sees a cd of Laraaji's _Essence/Universe_-- even a cd-r....--I'm looking for that, too.... This is out-of-print. Actually, almost anything on the Audion label is worth picking up.... Laraaji, incidentally, was a Brian Eno protege.... An electronic autoharp (!) is his instrument of choice.... Ethereal ambiance at its best! :-) Later! Steph - If you like Global Communication, definitely pick up Remotion. Between the Deseo collection, the Grid's Rollercoater single and the Blood Music single, I already had four of the seven tracks, and I still considered it a great buy. The aside from Moonwind,is there ANYTHING else released by Wavestar? I was amazed when I bought and listened to this CD years ago (a few years after audion went under, and after I finished my Synergy collection, I went out trying to find every other Audion Cd I could) and wondered whatever happened to them... I'd be willing to give body parts for copies of the tape mentioned in the liner notes to Moonwind... - -- Jason Bilsky- fuzzbox@world.std.com http://world.std.com/~fuzzbox "I want (Dick) to show the rest of us that it is possible to maintain a relationship and a large record collection simultaneously." -Nick Hornby, _High_Fidelity_ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Apr 1999 10:43:29 PDT From: "E O" Subject: (orb) once more I finally got a peek at the Once More toons from the oaa. I have to say that while it does have some definate Orbness to it, as a whole it kinda loses me. Mabey it's the vocals, same thing happened to me the first time I heard Perp. Dawn. However, that never grew on me. I loved the instrumental remixes, hated the vocal versions. Once More does sound like it has very good potential for remixes. Oh well, it hasn't diminished my need for another album. - -E _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. I just finished listening to Once More (thanks Scott :-)), and I have to say, I think it's groovy as shit. I can see myself in some club in Tokyo for some reason at 2 or 3 am feeling bliss dancing to this. IMHO, as far as commercialized sound is concerned, I think Toxygene was their biggest bastardization to date. THAT's a repetitive, made-for-radio-play only song. This song kicks ass. Just my 2C. The are from the Big Hard Disk Volume 2, and the two tracks are 6&789(got to be jerkin' edit) and Mantra(praying Mantra mix). The Mantra mix is different from the Auntie Aubrey excursions beyond the call... -- PLUS it's in STEREO. As far as I know, these particular mixes are only available on this rare-hard to find disk. They are both great remixes. Presently they are in the incoming folder.
