I consider several of you to be close electronic friends... i am constantly inspired and interested in the threads and the breadth of knowledge shown by most of the participants however, in the last few months there have been a few incidents of insults, flames, misinterpretations of humour and general arrogance that have been a bit alarming... some of which i myself have been involved in, I will admit, usually on the receiving end (ow! hot flame burnies!) Now, I am not trying to take the high moral ground, but please, please, PLEASE think before you post to the list. Especially if you have something insulting to say. The post that was made regarding Smiley, while probably innocent in most respects, showed three things: 1. The poster obviously wasn't paying attention to any of the orb postings over the last few years 2. The list would not be the same without Smiley, and most of us know this 3. If you don't KNOW someone, then it is safest to shut-up and say NOTHING Hopefully no-one mistook my previous humour regarding Smiley as an excuse to "e-bash" him. I feel that I "know" Smiley in such a way that he can understand where I am coming from, so when i communicate with him, we are JOKING AROUND. It is not something I do with everyone, only those who I feel will "let me"... it is part of being FRIENDS, and a lot to do with RESPECT. Under proposed legislation the U.S. Postal Service will be attempting to bilk email users out of "alternate postage fees". Bill 602P will permit the Federal Govt to charge a 5 cent surcharge on every email delivered, by billing Internet Service Providers at source. The consumer would then be billed in turn by the ISP. Washington D.C. lawyer Richard Stepp is working without pay to prevent this legislation from becoming law. The U.S. Postal Service is claiming that lost revenue due to the proliferation of email is costing nearly $230,000,000 in revenue per year. You may have noticed their recent ad campaign "There is nothing like a letter". Since the average citizen received about 10 pieces of email per day in 1998, the cost to the typical individual would be an additional 50 cents per day, or over $180 dollars per year, above and beyond their regular Internet costs. Note that this would be money paid directly to the U.S. Postal Service for a service they do not even provide. The whole pointof the Internet is democracy and non-interference. If the federal government is permitted to tamper with our liberties by adding a surcharge to email, who knows where it will end. You are already paying an exorbitant price for snail mail because of bureacratic efficiency. It currently takes up to 6 days for a letter to be delivered from New York to Buffalo. If the U.S. Postal Service is allowed to tinker with email, it will mark the end of the "free" Internet in the United States. One congressman, Tony Schnell (R) has even suggested a "twenty to forty dollar per month surcharge on all Internet service" above and beyond the government's proposed email charges. Note that most of the major newspapers have ignored the story, the only exception being the Washingtonian which called the idea of email surcharge "a useful concept who's time has come" March 6th 1999 Editorial) Don't sit by and watch your freedoms erode away! Tell your friends and relatives to write to their congressman and say "No!" to Bill 602P. If you get a so called "free" e-mail account on a web page, i.e. Hotmail. Then the advertising pays for the service. However you still need a server to get to the web page holding your "free" e-mail account. This message is either crap, or it's shame that the U.S.P.S. wants to charge for something we are already being charged for. Plus I agree, the U.S.P.S. doesn't provide the service. I just called my dad about this--he's a postmaster for the US Postal Service. Anyway, he said he received a message about this email from his district office. This letter is a hoax. In fact, the Congressman listed (Tony Schnell) foes not even exist. (Heh--"schnell" is German for "quick"....) Incidentally, it does *NOT* take six days to mail a letter from New York City to Buffalo.... First class mail generally takes a maximum of three days anywhere within the continental United States...unless it's accidentally misrouted.... From eastern New York state to western New York shouldn't take more than a day...two tops.... Also, the cost of postage is the lowest in the western world-- add that to the fact that not a single cent of taxpayer money is used to run the Post Office--it is funded solely through stamps. The Post Office has been a private organization for over 25 years now, and receives no federal monies.... (It's still considered a federal agency, for all intents and purposes, but it's self- sufficient.) As far as efficiency is concerned--I've mailed out dozens of packages to other list members (not to mention hundreds--if not thousands--of letters/bills/etc.) via the USPS, and had the same delivered to me, and only ONCE in that time has anything been lost (something never arrived to me); and only once has something arrived significantly late.... I cannot say the same for UPS.... Sorry--just had to stick up for the Post Office there (which is one of the few government-affiliated agencies you'll see me--a card carrying Libertarian--defend).... If erosion of liberties is an issue, I'd be more concerned with ludicrous crime bills and the so-called "war on drugs".... Congress trying to outlaw every mind-altering substance, without first knowing its true effects.... Although I neither take drugs nor approve of taking them, I gather that there are a significant number of people on this list that do, from reading the emails about attending Orb shows. Hey--it's YOUR body, you should be permitted to do whatever you wish to it, and the government has no moral business in telling you otherwise. I'm a carrier for the Postal Service (oxymoron) and as much as I think they need improvement...I don't believe this. This article seems to equate the Postal Service with the US Gov't. Well, the Postal Service is a PRIVATE non profit organization that hasn't been part of the government in YEARS! In the beginning, when PC's started, it was feared that it would cut into the Postal Service business.
