WARNING, CAUTION, DANGER, AND BEWARE! Gullibility Virus Spreading over the Internet! WASHINGTON, D.C.-The Institute for the Investigation of Irregular Internet Phenomena announced today that many Internet users are becoming infected by a new virus that causes them to believe without question every groundless story, legend, and dire warning that shows up in their inbox or on their browser. The Gullibility Virus, as it is called, apparently makes people believe and forward copies of silly hoaxes relating to cookie recipes, email viruses, taxes on modems, email tracking programs, free vacations, and get-rich-quick schemes [perhaps conspiracy theories should be included here]. "These are not just readers of tabloids or people who buy lottery tickets based on fortune cookie numbers," a spokesman said. "Most are otherwise normal people, who would laugh at the same stories if told to them by a stranger on a street corner." However, once these same people become infected with the Gullibility Virus, they believe anything they read on the Internet. "My immunity to tall tales and bizarre claims is all gone," reported one weeping victim. "I believe every warning message and sick child story my friends forward to me, even though most of the messages are anonymous." Another victim, now in remission, added, "When I first heard about Good Times, I just accepted it without question. After all, there were dozens of other recipients on the mail header, so I thought the virus must be true." It was a long time, the victim said, before she could stand up at a Hoaxees Anonymous meeting and state, "My name is Jane, and I've been hoaxed." Now, however, she is spreading the word. "Challenge and check whatever you read," she says. Internet users are urged to examine themselves for symptoms of the virus, which include the following: - - the willingness to believe improbable stories without thinking - - the urge to forward multiple copies of such stories to others - - a lack of desire to take three minutes to check to see if a story is true T. C. is an example of someone recently infected. He told one reporter, "I read on the Net that the major ingredient in almost all shampoos makes your hair fall out, so I've stopped using shampoo." When told about the Gullibility Virus, T. C. said he would stop reading email, so that he would not become infected. Anyone with symptoms like these is urged to seek help immediately. Experts recommend that at the first feelings of gullibility, Internet users rush to their favorite search engine and look up the item tempting them to thoughtless credence. Most hoaxes, legends, and tall tales have been widely discussed and exposed by the Internet community. Courses in critical thinking are also widely available, and there is online help from many sources, including - - Department of Energy Computer Incident Advisory Capability at > - - Symantec Anti Virus Research Center at > - - McAfee Associates Virus Hoax List at > - - Dr. Solomons Hoax Page at > - - The Urban Legends Web Site at > - - Urban Legends Reference Pages at > - - Datafellows Hoax Warnings at > Those people who are still symptom free can help inoculate themselves against the Gullibility Virus by reading some good material on evaluating sources, such as - - Evaluating Internet Research Sources at > - - Evaluation of Information Sources at > - - Bibliography on Evaluating Internet Resources at > Lastly, as a public service, Internet users can help stamp out the Gullibility Virus by sending copies of this message to anyone who forwards them a hoax. This message is so important, we're sending it anonymously! Forward it to all your friends right away! Don't think about it! This is not a chain letter! This story is true! Don't check it out! This story is so timely, there is no date on it! This story is so important, we're using lots of exclamation points! In fact I think its great. For me the least great has to be Pomme Fritz. I seem to remember that it was released about the same time as Big Life re-released Fluffy Clouds and Perpetual Dawn (soon after they signed with Island) to HUGE commercial success ( the reissues not PF) and it almost seemed like it was intentionally REALLY ambient, as if they didn't want to be associated with such commercial bigness. The mini tour that they did at the time certainly seemed full of top 40 types (know what I mean?) who went away with very disturbed looks on their faces probably feeling very ripped off at the lack of "danceable" tunes and mucho bleepy noises. Hey, maybe I'm wrong. It's just the way it seemed to me at the time and its still very much a "listening" album. I bought this one new the day it came out, and it was exactly want I wanted. I laugh that you people don't understand that everytime you listen to it something, different can be found underneath it all. Endless loops and endless samples. It's an album that remixes itself. That rarely happens. This album pissed a lot of Orb fans off, but I loved it because it was so different. It showed me that the Orb can take chances. Plus I like food a lot. :o) Worst Orb Album: Tie: Orblivion--If I have to pick one out of all the studio albums, it's this one. Come on....it's all the prior Orb albums crashed up into one. Not different at all. It's also the closest thing to a sell out the Orb have done yet. Short songs also make this one on the bottom of my list. And the tour wasn't very good as well. I paid less to see them on the Orbus tour and they played almost twice as long as they did on the following tour. Isn't the band supposed to play longer the more material they have??? No Simon or Nick backing them up either. All around, Orblivion was a step back for me. Auntie Aubrey Remix Project--A rip off with most of the tracks in mono. WHY? I bought it to get the mixes, now I still have to track down the 12 inch records. It's also mixed together, so you miss a lot of the beginnings and the endings. Best Orb Single: Blue Room 40 minute single........HANDS DOWN!!! Worst Orb Single: Asylum Just the b-sides make the bottom for me. I even like the 7 inch edit more than the album version. Which never happens. The b-sides on the other singles are really good, but this one's b-sides left much to answer for. Best Orb Song: Blue Room 40 minute Full length. Like Pink Floyd's "Echoes" This track is epic!!!! Worst Orb Song: tie: Suck my Kiss and the Solar Youth Perpetual Dawn. The worst thing Youth ever did in my opinion. Adding cheesy vocals.....what was he thinking?? Well there's my two cents. I like FFWD just as much as Pomme Fritz, but I didn't think that would count. (orbstuff) Hi y'all! I've been following recent threads for a while now and it struck me that my collection of Orb recordings is comparatively small to the ones of most people on this list. This may be due to the fact that I got into The Orb rather late (1995) - a lot of the back catalogue was already eliminated at that point (at least here in Germany - remixes and videos were impossible to get). Basically, I have the studio albums, Live 93, Auntie Aubrey and You Remixed and I'd *LOVE* to get some other stuff, as for example the long version of Blue Room, The Aubrey Mixes and Orbscure Trax (the latter of which I have been hearing about a lot on this list). So here's my question: can anyone tell me where I can possibly get older Orb remixes, videos and the albums mentioned above? Is there a place on the net where I can download a complete Orb discography including all remixes and albums (and eventually even bootlegs)? Finally, to add my bit to the least/most favourite discussion: fave album: Orbvs Terrarvm for it's extremely deep and the "chillest" of all their albums least fave album: Orblivion since I do like a lot of the tracks as such but in contrast to most of their other albums it doesn't make so much sense altogether. fave track: cannot decide between Plateau and Back Side of the Moon (Tranquility Lunar Orbit) least fave track: Assassin (7" Mix) Cya, Volker. - -- (% WouLD You LeT THe aLieNS LaND, PLeaSe %) (% THeY MiGHT Be HeRe To PiCK Me uP %) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Jun 1999 12:31:39 -0700 From: "sCt" Subject: (orb) How many ORB listmembers does it take to screw in a lightbulb? I will donate the webspace to host it -- but I don't have the time to maintain it or design it. If someone is willing to do that, let me (and the list) know and I will set up the site and give you FTP access. Anybody have the time to design it and maintain it? Of course, the hosting will be free. - - Scott # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Jun 1999 16:57:35 -0500 From: John Moxness Subject: RE: (orb) bio s of fans I will donate the webspace to host it -- but I don't have the time to maintain it or design it. I have some web space available that I'd be willing to donate also. No banners or anything too... Could be right under http://spindlex.com/Orbfans or something and Rachel Happens to be a really great graphic designer, it'd be foolish to not take advantage of her offered talent!
