Remember, when you use a credit card, the credit card company is on your side as a consumer. If you call them and tell them that you were ripped off and attempted to resolve the situation, they will do a chargeback; then the company in question has to prove that the charge is legitimate, which in the case of a mail- or net-order, they really can't provide the card swipe or signature necessary (and they usually can't provide the proof of delivery or other necessary bits either) to meet the relatively strict definition of a legitimate transaction. Read GEMM's advice to merchants on the subject...it is quite entertaining. Basically, it says that the consumer almost always wins in a chargeback situation, and it usually isn't worth fighting. Every time I've threatened a chargeback, the merchant has quickly caved, no matter how intransigent they were and how much they claim that I can't do that. Losing your merchant account just isn't worth ripping off one customer, who will almost certainly win anyway. After one try at resolving the situation, just call your credit card company, and let them take care of it. (Mail fraud charges, and contacting the RIAA (in the case of promo or bootleg items) are other effective ways of getting situations resolved, albeit somewhat more slowly.) Chris (who's been in a couple of nasty situations in the past few months) P.S. When using your credit card, don't let anyone charge you a premium or a percentage for using your card; that sort of thing is strictly prohibited in 99.99% of the contracts for merchant accounts. Let your card issuer know, and watch the fireworks. ;) P.P.S. A fair amount of other people didn't have that foreknowledge, though. FYI, the U.F.Off video was never released in NTSC format, only PAL. Around... ;) I'm not trying to be a smart-ass, but I *am* still trying to find a fair number of Orb-bits, and I don't really want *that* much more competition, so I'll refrain from specifics. I'm sure you understand. :) There are lots of places on the net to look...it just takes time, patience, and a bit of luck. I'm not just referring to Orb material in regard to GEMM either; almost everything I've looked at is inflated significantly. The main advantage to GEMM is the size of the database, and the instant gratification that one can buy, if you are willing to pay the prices, *and* the items are in stock. Plus, I think all the UFoff videos, like mine, are in the European standard (I forget whether that's NTSA or PAL) thus you shouldn't be able to play them directly in your VCR, unless you bought yours in Europe for some reason. I've owned the damn thing for almost 6 months and I've yet to see it because I'm too lazy to get it converted; plus, it's probably infringement which makes finding someone to do it a pain. - ---------------------------------------------------------------- |Joseph Jun | | |Loomis Lab. of Physics | --"My cat's breath smells | |1110 W. Lakeshore sure sucks the big one. Not only do they dub videos and CD-R's, but the icing on the cake was when I returned to Rochester this past week to visit and stopped by Lakeshore just to see what they had. Over a year ago when I was still a student at RIT in Rochester, there was a spring festival going on at RIT and some DJ's at the college radio station were outside giving away free cds. So, a friend and I get our free cds and he gets this cd of a group called 'Pond'. Never heard of them and they probably only pressed a few hundred copies of the cd. So, my friend and I go to Lakeshore and he trades this cd in for a couple of bucks because it sucks and so the cd should have been placed in the used cd bin, right? Wrong! Lakeshore has it in their new cd rack and are selling it for $13.99! Totally unbelievable, they have no shame. I had to laugh at the bullshit that goes on there. Hopefully, their little scam will get cracked down on someday and people won't unexpectedly be scammed into buying dubbed copies. ionman > --- Original Message ----- > From: Chris Johnson > To: > Sent: Tuesday, June 22, 1999 7:42 PM > Subject: Re: (orb) sorta off topic > > > > > > James Hill wrote: > > > > > I do have one important question, though. > > > > > > > *cough* Lakeshore sucks *cough* ;) > > > > > > I got the uf off vid through lakeshore and I thought the packaging was a > > > little screwy.
