To summarize (from the orbulletins page): There is still no word on a release date for the new album Cydonia. This is what we believe to be the case (if you know better please email us; it's a little complex but hang in there): + the band were fronted a significant amount of money by Universal/Island to record the album (standard major-label operating procedure); + the costs of recording the album must be recouped from the sales of that album; + the band's contract specifies that sales of copies imported to the US from the UK/Europe do not count towards the band's recoupment of these monies; + therefore the band loses money if the album does not get a simultaneous release in the US and the UK/Europe; + additionally, the label are unlikely to fund a tour based on a UK/Europe-only release; + and the US branch of the label cannot seem to find a release slot they feel is suitable for the album; + therefore the album is not coming out yet. - -- Lazlo Nibble - lazlo@studio-nibble.com - http://www.studio-nibble.com -- # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999 17:03:48 PDT From: "Joseph Hannah" Subject: (orb) Orb B N U!! I know it's a bit late to mention it but punching a small hole in a piece of cardboard and letting the sun shine through it will allow you to watch the moon in transit indirectly . . . outside of eclipse times you can even see sunspots this way. - -- Lazlo Nibble - lazlo@studio-nibble.com - http://www.studio-nibble.com -- # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Aug 1999 17:29:26 +0100 (GMT Daylight Time) From: Ed Blackshaw Subject: Re: RE: (orb) Solar Flare Orbies!! The moon circles the earth # roughly once every month.... If the moon orbited the Earth in exactly the same plane as the earth goes around the sun (the plane of the ecliptic), then a solar eclipse would occur every new moon. However, the plane that the moon orbits the earth in is slightly tilted to the ecliptic so an eclipse can only occur when the moon crosses the ecliptic and is aligned with the earth and sun. Although several solar eclipses generally occur each year, most are not total eclipses, ie. the moon crosses slightly above or below the plane of the ecliptic and does not cover the sun completely. Apparently a total solar eclipse happens somewhere on the planet roughly every 18 months or so... Another interesting(?) fact: The moon is actually spiralling slowly away from the earth and in a few thousand years, it will not be possible to see a total solar eclipse (apart from the fact that we'll all be dead by then anyway) because the moon will be too far away and won't fully cover the sun. At the moment, the sun is four hundred times further away from us than the moon and just happens to have four hundred times the radius. Cosmic coincidence?
