Greg Kihn, for those who don't know, fronts the Greg Kihn Band, which had two major hits in the early 1980s: "The Breakup Song" (*love* that tune!) and "Jeopardy." He's also a novelist now, his first book being _Horror Show_, which is an homage to the cheesey sci-fi/horror flicks of the 1950s, a la Ed Wood.... The book was truly frightening in places, and in other spots had me laughing so hard I nearly puked! (I haven't been so scared since I read Richard Matheson's _Hell House_, and haven't laughed so hard since I read Douglas Adams' _Hitchhiker's_ "trilogy"....) Anyway, what *is* the format of KROQ? Is it classsic rock, or alternative rock? My understanding is that in the early 1980s, it played mostly punk and new wave, but I could be totally wrong on that.... But for once there is a posting directed at me! Yes, I was the person who sold the Aubrey and got $102. As I listed the is the mega rare first nimbus pressing. for those of you out there who have a UK edition, check the code on the disc itself. If i can remember my history lessons correctly, this is the one that was solicited to buyers and distributered for only 24 and that was it. Kaput. No more. The second issue came about when the Orb were getting their divorce from Big Life and Big Life went on their reissue rampage. So for completists i could see why this could have great appeal. As to the bootleg issue, if something has been openly offered to people, then so be it. if somebody actually owns all these and puts effort into mastering etc then there become a labour time issue involved. Also there is an exclusivity issue if something is rare to the point that you and a small few only have it............. without name dropping names of the particular artists, i at the close of my auctions offered CDrs for 2 particular bands, with one release being an exclusive radio show that i was first hand involved in liberating from a record company and the other is a full CDr of a bands long (and in many cases vinyl only or promo only) back catalogue. Both these are being done (matsering etc) with assistance from several parties involved and there are expenses involed in such matters. Both of these were only offered to the particular purchasers of the specific band and was immediately offering my apologies to all that would take offence to such an offer. The people that should be persecuted the most are those who do not claim that their products are CDrs. Bootlegs have a rich history with music, but CDrs are just buggering up the romance behind them. For words guide us to order; they instill in us the need to have others speak for us; they make us receptive to the fixity of imposed meaning. If being without words is meaningless then techno hints at the possibility of any and all meaning...a living and illicit speech where listening is not judged as passive but part of a process of communication. Techno evades the exhausted vocabulary mouthed by lyricists and legislators, anarchists and authoritarians. When words do appear they are sampled from elsewhere. They become another noise element in the layers of sounds, to add to the energy of the music, for humor or defiant pose. Sampling offers the possibility that the world is audible, available for everyone to continually re-arrange, re-mix and fuck up. Techno also points to an outcome of digital technology that originals of things no longer exist. In this fiber space of endless copying, control over ownership of ideas becomes completely unenforceable. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Sep 1999 09:16:05 EST5EDT From: "Vince Frank" Subject: Re: (orb) Art of Noise > A R T O F N O I S E -- L I V E 1 9 9 9 > > (Their second, long overdue tour in 13 years !) > > 10/07/99 San Francisco CA @ Slim's > 10/09/99 Indio CA @ Coachella Valley Music Fest > 10/11/99 Chicago IL @ Metro / Smart Bar > 10/12/99 New York NY @ Irving Plaza > 10/13/99 Boston MA @ Paradise Rock Club > > > Hopefully there are more dates to come. Sort of like, "Fuck the rest of the U.S." People wonder why electronic music doesn't catch on like, say, rock or country or heavy metal.... For crying out loud, even friggin' METALLICA tours the "backwoods" areas--and Metallica is FAR more popular than Art of Noise could ever hope to be. And that's probably *why*! Metallica (and other metal bands) became a huge commercial success BECAUSE they tour extensively. Before that, only geeks like me listened to heavy metal...now EVERYONE listens to it.... I live in a relatively low density region of Pennsylvania--the nearest big city is Pittsburgh, and that's two hours away. I don't want to hear bullshit like, "Groups like Orb and Art of Noise, et al., don't come to your region, because it doesn't have the population." C'mon! It's not as though Orb sells out whole stadiums in big cities! We have TONS of big name bands (as well as big names of the so- called underground) come to this area all the time, and the shows always tend to be well-attended (if not sold out). Sorry. I didn't get much sleep last night. ;-) Vince # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Sep 1999 10:08:04 -0400 From: "*eric irving marden*" Subject: (orb) LX interview Hi fellow orbologists: Ran across this link on the orb news group.
