Well I cannot give anyone a definitive list (I doubt anyone could), but if you can get hold of a CD by "23 Degrees" called "An Endless Searching For Substance" - you can find it through Silent Records in San Francisco. As far as the info goes it was a one-off CD of tracks recorded between 88 and 92 but it is probably the closest thing I've ever heard to resemble the orb without in any way being a rip-off or diluted copy. The whole CD is very dubby and very very ambient but superb to listen to whatever mood you are in. Being in the UK I had to wait a few months for the thing to arrive as the CD got stopped at customs - obviously the custom officers 1. listened to it 2. got spaced out 3. tried to quarantine it. Problem is I don't think 23 Degrees made any other CD's but if anyone knows different please reply. OK, my FTP server is running, but it needs some people to hammer it so I can be sure it is working.... ftp://orb:orb@24.1.153.3 BTW: One of the things that has always bugged me about the OAA is that there was no consistency in the file naming and file info tags. So, I have been going through and redoing it all to match the info in Lazlo's discography, as well as adding a text file with the discography info, and an .m3u playlist file in each folder. This is a LOT of work, and I haven't gotten very far (made it through the Bootleg folder). I am doing this mostly for my own benefit, but I hope others will appreciate it as well. If anyone has a problem with me renaming the files or changing the info, let me know. There is an upload directory for adding anything that is missing, and I hope people will follow my lead in file naming, etc. I realize people have different OSes and that we can't always have exactly the same names, but we should try. If anyone has a better format that what I have adopted, let me know. In the meantime, every one is welcome leech while they can. My pc is up usually 24/7, on a cable connection that averages between 1500 and 2000 kbps (incoming. outgoing will be about half that i guess.) It is usually only down when I reboot (it's NT, that happens more than I would like it to) or if I feel like playing some games in win98. So, there are no guarantees it will be up, or you won't be booted without notice, but it's the best I can do, and it will be up more often than not. During the Hours of 1:00 am and 7:00 pm Pacific Standard will be the best times to access. Also, I set a 10 user/56kbps limit for now, and will modify accordingly as time goes on. So, there ya go. I recently saw them Live... and like you said... though many pictures of tom and ed get out to the public... i have yet to see their faces on t-shirts and lunch boxes...> Anyway, later on after they played (this was at one of those evil rave parties) i was hanging out, and out of the blue this pack of you innocents run by getting all excited pointing and saying "There he is , There he is..." to make a long story short they thought they were posing for pictures and hugging 1/2 of the chemicals ... At first i was like cool, I wouldn't mind meeting one of the artists here.... but as i circled this crazy mob i realized that these were: A) some fucdup (in the iniebrieated sence) girls B) that they would actually treat Tom like a backstreet boy C) This guy would pose as a chem bro. and not just say... "hey wouldn't my T-shirt not have holes in it if i was just paid 25,000 pounds sterling to play for two hours ?" I mean i've been confused with the DJ before... but i was always cop to being a regular guy... anyway thought i'd share... sorry for the off topic post (though the orb and chemical brothers are from the uk) \e\ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Sep 1999 12:02:09 EST5EDT From: "Vince Frank" Subject: (orb) Media & Music Let's be honest here, folks: the media should not be blamed for either putting faces on music, or taking them away (ha!). It is the ARTISTS and their respective record labels' marketing departments. If the Orb wanted to be more well known, I'm sure Island would have relatively no trouble making that happen (although I may be naive in that assumption)...just look at another Island group: U2. Is their public recognition a result of the media, or is it a result of marketing saavy on behalf of the record label? A fair question, I do believe.... Cause and effect.... My 2 cents.... SAW 1 (AKA SAW 85-92) is resting peacefully in my house, I think it's some of the greatest work that Richard has ever done. A lot of cheesy old electronica that is completely different from anything else he has done and indescribable ...sorry, I get a bit excited when the Twin is mentioned. >>np: aphex twin - selected ambient works volume II >>>hell >>is volume one?!?!?> ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Sep 1999 13:41:44 PDT From: "E O" Subject: (orb) take it all So I'm running through my CD-rs and need to clear this crap out. I've never seen them sold together, unless yours was some sort of special.... I'd love to track down some of the tetsu inoue stuff - organic cloud, electro harmonix, etc. I'd also like the orb to stop writing pop songs a la toxygene and get back to the more lengthy stuff... like the 40 min. blue room. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=171895331 $9 min, $16 reserve, no bids at the moment.
