If you have, and you still have no appreciation for him and his music, it is in my oppinion that you are out of your minds. I'm sure that many people on this list assume that anything that's not electronica/post eighties technopop "sucks ass." you all need to be re-educated on principles of music. Granted, Hendrix' pop songs (those that get regular air play and are put on granite pedestals as being the cornerstone of revolutionary musical ideology) are rather dated and in my oppinion boring i.e. "foxy lady" and "purple haze," Hendrix's more experimental stuff, such as "Machine Gun" were far beyond his time and need to be reconsidered by people like us, who (I hope) are seeking beyond the beyond in music revolution. Kudos to Hendrix, for without him, the likes of the Orb may have never been on the front lines of musical trancendance. '1983' and 'moon, turn the tides' are some of the first examples of ambient music outside of john cage and karlheinz stockhausen. i often throw em in my ambient sets, the latter on top of 'meat n veg' or 'montagne d'or.' steve0 ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I really didn't know that it was levar, and apparently, I guess, it isn't him. So, feel free to evade that string. I've only been on the list for about a month now, and I missed whatever went on before. On a similar note, for those of you who do not already know, the samples on orblivion about the appocalypse and about how "evolution itself is evolving" come from a movie that I hightly recomend, called "Naked." This movie, though on the disturbing side, to me is one of the smartest movies I've seen. Also, on another matter, for those of you who do not know, Halie Selesie is the second incarnation of the CHRIST, in the rastafarian religion, and Marcus Garvey, a rastafarian himself, was one of the founding members and breifly the leader of the militant "Black Panthers" in the USA during the vietnam war. Thus making the whole "Is there a Halie Selesie there, or er, he should be there shortly...Will you tell him that a Marcus Garvey phoned?" a very funny sham, being that it is obviously making both the Rastafarian religion and the Black Panthers out to be some upity English men. I would love to find out where these samples came from. If anyone knows, do tell. I'm sure that these have all been discussed before, but like I said, I've only been on the list a short while. As for the "Once Upon A Time In The West" sounds in Little Fluffy Clouds, I was able to pick that out right away, being that this is one of my all time fav. movies. The Steve Reich stuff that is heard in many orb songs is rather new to me though. I always thought that it was actually the orb using some electronic means, when actually it is sampled classic guitar stuff. Thus making the whole "Is there a Halie Selesie there, > or er, he should be there shortly...Will you tell him that a Marcus > Garvey phoned?" a very funny sham, being that it is obviously making > both the Rastafarian religion and the Black Panthers out to be some > upity English men. I would love to find out where these samples came although rather unrelated to teh orb, marcus garvey died in 1940, and certainly had nothing to do with either vietnam or the black panthers. cl back to the orb # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Oct 1999 02:42:52 -0400 (EDT) From: loweaj@webtv.net (Anthony J. Maybe there are more than one Marcus Garveys with historical signifagance. I'll definately check into this, being that I wrote a thesis on Bob Marley and Rasafarianism, and I included a little on Garvey. You are the first person to challenge me on this point. I know this is slightly off topic for the list, but I will post my findings here anyway, because maybe some of you are interested.
