I know we all have different tastes and some prefer electronica over instrument based, but we can not deny the origins of what we all listen too, just because it doesn't fit into our schema of what good music should sound like. None of my top ten favorite artists sound anything alike, and that's because i explore the entire gamut. I hate classifying or categorizing music. I hate it when people ask me "what kind of music do you like?" I always answer this with "I like good music" I used to think that I only liked 'psychedelic' music (this being still very general, and not too much of a classification; when is the last time anyone went to a music store and found the psychedelic section?) But the older I get and the more I learn, the more obvious it becomes that music is psychedelic because it is good, not vise-verse. Of course, the term 'good' is going to depend on many factors and is always diputable. I work at Target, and I am the manager of the music, movies, and books department. I will venture to say that none of the music there is good. But it does consist of the most popular fresh steaming turds in the music business, so, apparently someone thinks it's good. I have way too much to say in regards to this matter, so I will save it for later. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Oct 1999 16:37:16 +0100 (GMT Daylight Time) From: Ed Blackshaw Subject: Re: (orb) non-electronic classics (unorb ) On Mon, 04 Oct 1999 10:23:08 -0500 Martin Wallace wrote: # I used to think that I only liked 'psychedelic' music (this being # still very general, and not too much of a classification; when is the last # time anyone went to a music store and found the psychedelic section?) I've looked for the rasta paper that I wrote in high school (eight years ago) to see exactly what I said about him, with no luck. If I did give you that status, please forgive my very embarassing err, Mr. Garvey. (I know he's dead, but who's to say that he's not on the mailing list somewhere in heaven) I probably should have said that he was an influence on the Black Panthers, but I spent a few hours looking for any connection on the net yesterday and found none. Someone on the list emailed me yesterday interested in Bob Marley. Well, a striking fact about Marley is that he was very anti-drug. I know the first thing people will say is that he smoked A LOT of pot. This is true. He smoked pot since he was thirtteen years old; but you have to consider that pot smoking in his culture is like coffee drinking in ours. Another interesting thing to know about Marley is that he (disputedly, and I'm sure not single-handedly) prevented a civil war between rivalling parties in Jamaica "with the powers of music". Since I can't find my paper, and I wish to avoid misrepresenting Marley like I did Garvey, I won't give any more 'facts' on him. But one thing that I do find interesting is that all of his music was devoted to and in endless praise to"Ja." (God) It seems that whenever the topic of Marley comes up, all that can be said how much pot he smoked and how cool his music sounds when your stoned. Well, he was much more than that. But, it's part of the game...I bid on a lot of items that I already have, either to improve the quality of my copy, to get trade-fodder, because the item is going for well below the "usual" price (with the intent to resell in the future), or simply to track current prices. If someone wants something more than you, and/or has deeper pockets, well, that is how auctions work. It *is* the spirit of the thing. Give it time. If spacelove significantly increases the going price on these items by overbidding, more people will offer them, which will drive down prices in the long run. Patience is a virtue on eBay...unless an item is impossibly rare, it will come by again (and again, and again). ;) Chris np: Siouxsie & The Banshees - Peel Sessions # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Oct 1999 15:31:36 -0600 (MDT) From: Mike Bailey Subject: Re: (orb) spacelove-ch again >If someone wants something more than you, and/or has deeper pockets, >well, that is how auctions work. It is an *auction*. The one with the most desire/money wins. If you don't like it, don't bid. There are plenty of online stores that will be happy to charge you a high, fixed price for any given OOP Orb CD. (Note that the fixed prices are usually even higher than the auction ones.) I don't know about you, but I haven't seen any particularly good deals go by on the list recently...there have been a few nice items up for "trade", but that is a complete crapshoot; as the odds of having a something that someone is interested in are relatively small, much less the odds of that item being an "extra" in your collection. > >Give it time. It does. I've been using eBay for over a year and a half, and have been tracking Orb stuff on eBay for nearly that long. Supply and demand definitely applies. When items go for significantly more than usual, it brings more of them out of the woodwork, which drives prices back down. In any case, patience is the key. I've gotten great deals on a number of rarities, just by waiting, and bidding the price I'm willing to pay (significantly less than the going rate) on each one that goes by. > Remember, don't even think about selling your collection! :) I wouldn't. But, there are a lot of people who aren't quite as attached to their Orb (or have it backed onto mini-disc, or CD-R), who would be happy to sell their copy of the Aubrey Mixes for $50-$80, once they are aware of the going rate. Also, we may start seeing prices on these drop anyway, as it looks like pretty much the entire Orb catalog has been bootlegged wholesale in Russia, and they are starting to make their way to the market. I disagree. About half of my Orb collection has come from somewhere or other on this list, and for the most part not horribly overpriced; auctions are smaller, and a lot of people just decide on a price and give it to the first person who asks. A lot of people coming across an extra of something not too rare put it up on the list at cost or a few dollars more for shipping. I know I have a few times. The only big problem is that if you really really want something, you may not be first to reply and there's nothing you can do. Whereas on eBay, I have bid and bid on at least 20 auctions in the past month, and have not won a single one, although I was close on a few until spacelove-ch showed up. (Including FFWD and the Aubrey Mixes.) I've seen them on eBay, and in a few other places. These are actual pressed CDs, not CD-Rs. I guess I had better jump in here and say something about all this. Marcus Garvey was the leader of the "Back to Africa" movement early in the 20th Century. He (his movement) even had purchased a ship "The Black Star Liner" to transport people back to Africa. Marcus prophesied that God would return as a black leader in Africa. Thus when Ras Tafari was crowned King of Ethiopia many black's looked at this as fulfillment of this prophesy. Selassie himself was a Christian and is linked as the 225th descendent of King Solomon and Sheba. That's pretty much the way I remember most of it without digging out the books to check all the details. As far as Marley preventing a civil war. He did bring the two Jamaican political rivals on stage and made them join hands in unity. There was terrible civil war going on at the time because of the upcoming elections. Ah, Babylon. Nothing changes. I read an interview with Bob after the show where he said if he had been in his right mind he should have killed them both. Can you imagine LX, Bono, Cher (bad choice) being able to prevent a a civil war today? Marley was that powerful in Jamaica at that time. I am thankful to have seen Bob Marley/Wailers twice. I have been playing around with the settings on the server, trying see how much impact it has on my system. I appear to average about 8-12 users at any given time, and average total throughput is about 400 kbps (that's over 4 GB per day!), with a max around 1500 kbps (yeah, baby!) At first I had a limit of 10 people, and 120 kbps per person. I then upped it to 15 users, and no limit on throughput. My average throughput stayed about the same either way. My download speeds did go down noticeably, but I was still able to browse the web and download mp3s from Usenet without causing my streaming audio to miss a beat. So there is no problem there. However, my system was still responding slowly, and I now know why. Tonight I turned the number of users down to 5, and my system response is much better. I believe the hard disk activity caused by 8-12 different files being read and transferred constantly were having a big impact. With only five files being transferred, my disk activity is way down, and the impact barely noticeable. So, I think when I am at my desk and working in the evening, I will be turning it down to 5, and back up to 15 users the rest of the time. Also, just to remind everybody, it may go down at anytime, for any length of time, as I have needs to access other OSes. Some are called "Rastas of the Christ Doctrine" like a cool dub guy on mp3.com "Messian Dread." He did a really Orbish song called "City of Confused"... or something like that. I really enjoyed it. I actually had the Steve Reich "Electric Counterpoint" before I knew Orb. Those 3 movements are some of the most beautiful classical music I've heard, for some reason... I heard LFC on an instore playr. and knew I had to get it. Didn't hear any other songs..... 20 bucks is quite a risk for one song on a UK double album for a 15-year old :) By the way, I have a band on mp3.com called "logic kills" which has a well-reviewed ambient track called "underground cities" with lots of frogs on it somebody here might like. maybe you could check it out and tell me if I suck? www.mp3.com/logickills Sorry, a little self-promo. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ End of orb-digest V2 #248 *************************
