Obi is a Japanese instrumentalist/producer and a trained Nohkan (Japanese classical flute) player in the Noh theatre (Japan's oldest performing art). Before moving to Europe he produced several local pop artists in his home country. In Amsterdam he worked on the music accompanying Joel Ryan's novel The Number Readers, in Cologne he collaborated with Japanese artist Miwa on a project in which vocals were combined with music randomly generated by computers. Now based in London, where he established his own label AO Records, Obi's output has never been more consistent: over the past few years he produced and/or remixed remarkable tracks such as Suzuki K1 & 7.5 cc's Satellite Serenade, Akiko Kanazawa's Tanto-Bushi and Secret Squirrel by The Saxophonettes. Obi and Greg first met in Tokyo, where The Orb were recording Assassin, and the pair immediately found a lot of common ground between them. Already during the first Subsurfing sessions at the Butterfly studio in London they attracted the attention of musicians like Kenji Jammer (Bomb The Bass, he also collaborates with a.o. Tim Simenon and Keith LeBlanc in the live project Night Of Interference), Kris Weston, Charlie Hall (The Drum Club), Steve Hillage (System 7) and Youth. Some of them contributed to the Frozen Ants album and together with the band and other guest musicians Baluji (sitar, auto harp) and Jean (Chinese cello, kokyu) shaped it into a brilliant electro-ethnic masterpiece. It's just that they've all set it to 21 (except for Louisiana apparently, according to an email I got in response to my last musing on this subject regarding Ronald Reagan). Pay attention next time. :-) ObOrb: I brought my Oldfield vs The Orb "Sentinel" CD-single to listen to today. Well, I am one of those morons, although this is my first eligible year. The reason I have no desire to vote is because, the way I see it, every election seems to give you the choice of the lesser of two evils. In the last race, I didn't want Bob Dole to win, I sure as hell didn't want Billy C. to win, and I would have had little problem with Ole' Ross, but he didn't stand a chance. With the electoral college the way it is, your vote doesn't even friggin count so why should I waste my time and vote for somebody that I don't want in office if they're just going to decide for me who I don't want in office. I think that if we were given a choice of changing our crackhead system every four years to some other form of government or if there was an issue I felt strongly about (like the government agreeing with the pot legal states so that no more people who are "LEGALLY" prescribing marijuana to poor little old ladies are arrested by the government), I might consider. But the way it is now, Everything we do seems to be based (although it is denied) on Christian values (not that I'm anti-Christian, I just think it plays in too much) and I don't want to live in a country where there is a force of Christian ideals wherever I look. (I still resent the fact that we live in the year 1999 AD, but that's almost worldwide, now) I'm sorry for the rant, especially since this is probably my second post of the year, but I feel better now. Just so this is somewhat valid, I saw a pigface CD the other day and there was a remix by Youth on it. Does anybody have this and is it worth my money? That's All For Now. It's on one of the two CD singles of Toxygene. I can't remember which but I figure it's probably CD2. -~'`'~,.,~'`'~,.,~'`'~,.,~'`'~,.,~'`'~,.,~'`'~,.,~'`'~- | Ed Blackshaw, School of Chemistry | ( Organic Section ) ) University of Bristol ( ( Tel. That's a group I used to listen to way back when, but don't recall if there were ever any Orb remixes.... Seems like prime material.... Speaking of Skinny Puppy, does anyone have any idea which *CD* that the song "Incision" appears on? I have the cassette version of _Remission_ on which "Incision" appears, but the cd rerelease (combined with _Bites_) does not appear to have that track. (And that was my favorite track on the album!) Can anyone help me with this? Thanks! Seems like prime > material.... I kinda remember hearing a story from andy a few years ago that they were/were supposed to remix SP, I guess for that remix cd that came out. I think at that time they were in the process of faxing back & forth which track to do. it never got sorted out tho (?) or it would have come out on that cd...kinda disappointing, cos it would've been an awesome remix. on another note: what else has come out recently? the last orb thing I got was the Dirty Kiss remix there was that Roedelius thing, One True Parker remix, Cydonia CDR... anything else? can anyone give info on these, if they're not in the discog yet? US or UK only? thanks ant # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Oct 1999 16:21:49 -0400 (EDT) From: Anthony Bryan Subject: Re: (orb) Sun Electric Aaaaaaaaaaaaah my reply to 2 se posts: I just got back from my first trip to New York City, specifically Grennwich Village. My girfriend bought me Sun Electric's (orb related!) Kitchen and I bought myself Via Nostra. Amazing stuff! Atmospheric and whatnot. There are some tracks on Via Nostra that are very jazzy, sounding almost like ambient d&b (maybe). There were kinda pricy cuz they're only available as imports in the US, but they are definitely worth the money. Do any of you Orbies have any comments on other SE releases? - --- I've gotten everything by them that I can find, along w/ fehlmann, because its always good stuff. you might want to get Present next, as thats in the more active sound along w/ Kitchen & Via Nostra (our way), then the yellow live album which most will agree can do no wrong, then aaaahh > Ive been looking for this (CD) for a long long time. Placed orders with > everyone online, never got it. I was wondering if anyone had a copy they > would like to trade or sell? I like aaah, but not as much as all the other SE stuff. its nice, but for some reason I don't enjoy it AS much. so if you can't find it, you're not missing that much. I would say everything else by them is essential tho. I'll have to dig out aaah, cos I couldn't really say why I don't like it as much. ant # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Oct 1999 23:40:20 +0200 From: Jean Christophe DERRIEN Subject: (orb) Music Sample Spotted :( Thanks to my girlfriend, I spotted a track that Lx, Thomas & Thrash sampled for OOBE.
