For example, Norman Cook using the name Fatboy Slim, and Pizzaman for his remixes. Justin Robertson remixes using the name Lionrock, Prankster Prophet, and Gentleman Thief. ...Chris The French Kiss, and Bob Sinclar. etc. Perfecto could mean a perfect dance remix as much as a Gentleman Thief mix is the ideal mix for a kindhearted dancing bandit. Many DJs just change names so that the clubs don't get tired of playing their music and they can still remain "underground" in a sense. Don "Don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry." My friends Gregg and Chad, and my girlfriend Sarah and myself arrive at ARO.Space around 10:30 last night, and met up with about 8 or 10 more friends at the club. Two DJ's were spinning, I don't know the names of either -- one upstairs spinning jungle, and one downstairs spinning some fairly mainstream stuff -- Beastie Boys, etc. We began to get our drink on, and found a nice couch in the upstairs loft overlooking the main dance floor. Alex Gifford came on at about 11:30. Alex G's set was mainly mainstream stuff for the first half, then blended in some salsa and drum and bass, and finished off with a great mix of Spybreak. LX came on at about 12:45 and started off with some KILLER dub. The middle of his set was mainly trance, then he finished with a viscious drum and bass mix. All we spotted for sure was a twisted LFC, Didgeridoo (AFX), and he finished up with Once More at about 2:30 a.m. So here's where it gets good: LX starts packing up his records, and Sarah get his attention for an autograph. LX kneels down and signs 3 CD covers!! FFWD: "LX woz ere 11-11-1999! mit lieben" Terrarum: "Flowers of Orb. LX" UFOrb: "LXP woz ere" (and a nicely drawn flower). He chats with Sarah for a second about the FFWD cover then asks for a smoke. Right on cue I'm handing her a joint to hand to LX, and he invites us up on the stage. By now the club was completely cleared out, and me, Sarah, Gregg, Chad, some guy I didn't know, and LX light up a fat one backstage!! So now were standing around, talking about the set and Seattle and stuff, and Sarah asks him about the new FFWD album. LX says he just started talking to Kris about it and they're ready to set plans to start working on it, but he gave no indication that they had already started. He also explained how Terminus was basically a FFWD track. The conversation quieted as we all began to feel the effects of the green we just smoked, and LX asked if we could give him a ride to his hotel. CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS! We obviously said we'd give him a ride to anywhere he wanted to go, so Sarah grabbed one of LX's record bags, and we headed off to my 4-runner, parked a couple of blocks away. On the walk there, LX made a couple of jokes about our rainy weather (like every visitor to Seattle). We put his records in the back, and headed off to his hotel which was on the other side of Seattle. Juno Reactor was in my deck, so he told us about a phone conversation he had with Nick Burton about how excited he was to have a track on The Blair Witch Project Soundtrack (which is funny because there's no music in the movie); and Sarah talked with him about Luciana, and LX was trying to remember what it was he actually did on that album. It was so great! Sarah, needless to say, was just trying to keep from passing out from being in the Dr.'s presence. I said to LX that I heard CDR's of Cydonia were floating around, and he says I've got a couple with me and asks for his "special brown bag" from the back. He digs out a CDR of Cydonia and asks to put it in. Hell ya. He asks for track 6 (Ralf?) because he says it's his favorite. So we're driving around a motionless downtown Seattle at 3:00 in the morning, listening to some new Orb per LX's request! CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS! We pull up to his hotel and get his records out of the back (oh, and he took his CD back, too -- damn!) He thanks us for the smoke and the ride and shakes all of our hands and gives Sarah a big hug and a kiss on each cheek, and walks across the street to his hotel waving goodbye. Sarah proclaims this night as "the greatest night of my life thus far" and says she can now die and go to heaven (several times). As I'm finishing this up it still doesn't even seem real to me either....... well that's my report on last night's show in Seattle, thanks for listening. Depends on how satisfied you are with the recording quality you get coming in through the line-in on your sound card -- only you know for sure on that one. But yeah, a phono, a preamp (or amp with phono-in and line-out), and a sound card with line-in are all that are technically required. And a hard drive that can keep up with the data without leaving out little bits here and there as you record. From there it's just adding fancier and fancier hardware until you're happy with the sound. But hey it doesn't have to be Smithsonian Archival Quality if you can at least listen to it in the car, right? DAT you can do direct-digital to the PC if you have the right hardware in the PC, though what exactly that might be I have no idea. - -- Lazlo Nibble - lazlo@studio-nibble.com - http://www.studio-nibble.com -- # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Nov 1999 11:41:11 -0500 From: Andrew Sturgess Subject: (orb) recordning from CD, etc. recordning from CD, etc. you might try getting a soundcard with stereo RCA input (and output, while you're > at it). 'you are the man,' i said. Lazlo-- I can't cc him because you didn't include his address, so can you pass this along? The source of the tripping on sunshine sample is from a song called "Walking on Sunshine" by Rockers Revenge. It was released around 1981 or 1982 (it's *not* the Katrina & the Waves song from the early 80's). I think Arthur Baker was involved, but I'm not sure about that. I doubt there was ever a Rockers Revenge album (I had a 12" of the song that had about 4 remixes; I think the Orb took the sample from the vocal-only version), but I'll bet it appears on a few compilations of rap from the late 70's /early 80's. Good luck finding it. It's pretty trance-inducing and interesting as a progenitor of techno. I saw him about 3 months ago here in Shanghai. I thought his mix was really good, but I'm not any sort of expert. If anyone wants, I think I can provide a website for info once I check it out at the house. Query: Is the 4-5 minutes of silence at the beginning of '72' off Orblivion a part of the song, or just there to confuse people? Whenever I hear that snippet from 'Hair' at the beginning, I always anticipate the cut, cuz its cool. But then, I always am taken by surprise when it finally hits...any thoughts?
