First off let me say that I was very surprised to find DJ spooky there and performing. He had a good flow on that night, like Benjamin said he was pretty straightforward. Nothing to experimental. Then the handoff. LX seemed to be a little uncomfortable at first. I remember him actively knob twiddling and then as if it was the wrong knob, he made a face and shook his head. Overall his set was very worthwhile. Throwing those mixes everyone's been raving about, Plateau and Once More. If I had to say though I liked the 'radio' version of Once More better than the 'live' mix he played. I got to meet Sean Wolfe and later in the night [while waiting to get my vinyl copy of Auntie Aubrey's signed] I met Benjamin L. May. Both of whom were really friendly and cool to hang with. Sean I definitely owe you a drink! Oh, my autograph reads; "from Mick to Vick", with a little flower over one of the turtles. My only complaint for the whole night was the same as Benjamin's; that high end pretty much killed my hearing for the next 24 hours. It went beyond the usual 'ringing' after a show and straight into deaf. Surprisingly when I saw The Friends of Dean Martinez there two weeks prior, the same thing happened...Hmmm... We chilled , had a beverage or two. Xtremely tight security , so we couldnt partake in the herb till after. This venue was ultra tiny - the monitor by the ticket seller showed "211 of 350 tickets sold"... It was quite the intimate encounter. DJ spooky was all over the map, he even played an electric oboe(?) along to Jimi Hendrix's "Star Spangled Banner". He threw in some ear piercing walls of delay and some signature scratching techniques. His post Alex set was the probably the most orbient. Surprised no one mentioned this :) Alex came out wearing a yellow umbro soccer jersey with a big red "commodore" logo'd across the front with the C= symbol. Very cool stuff indeed! Haven't seen him spin since the MBM tour back a few years. Once he warmed up things went very smoothly - once more, plateau, a dash of little fluffy clouds, that "deep in the jungle" bit he's been sporting for the past few tours, even some reggae and a mickey finn choon. I was surprised to see him dabbling in drum n' bass - was nice. All in all well worth it - great audience, lots of room to move about despite the incredibly small size of this venue. Greetings All, Since both of my orb brothers have chimed in about Lx's stint in Orlando, I'll be here to fill in the blanks thus far. Since I tend to shift into tangents when i write, I'm going to start at the begining, so by the time i'm done wandering around topics in an orb-like fashion you can be rest assured that i will arrive at the point before the closing of this email. Being the only local for this dj date and at least 2 of the FL resident orb fans expressing intrest in driving to the show, I extended a hand and sent them directions to both a local bar i figured we could meet at and directions to the venue itself. Much to my dismay, the bar i chose didn't open til 9pm and i was left wandering back to my car, to head to the venue at 8:30 ... both Joe and LiquidW (Glenn) gave me pretty good descriptions of themselves, so i figured i would see them at the show, and everything would be cool. And everything was. I got to 'the groove' @ 9pm and promptly bought my ticket from the nearby vending window. A little background info on the groove ... it's a club that is owned and operated by Universal Studios and is located in their City Walk complex - a concentrated nexus of Theme restaraunts and bars. Universal Studios (for orbies outside of the states) is the makers of motion pictures that also run two theme parks -- one in Californa the other in Orlando, FL. ... anyway - i get inside and the music isn't even on yet... the bars' are still setting up and employees dressed in thier finest trendy outfits milling about everywhere. I get a drink and soon the house dj starts laying some records down .. nothing too cheesy, just some hard house favorites... then i notice the short bald guy in the down feather vest. As he walks back to the door that leads 'backstage' and up to the dj booth, i grab his attention and wave him over to me. "You wouldn't happen to be Alex Patterson would you?" "That I would" he replied in a thick english accent. I preceeded to tell him that I was here to see him tonight, when i had last saw him DJ (the MBM tour three years ago). I told him i had heard the new single, "Once More" - he point blankly told me - "Ev'rybody Has" and asked me how i had heard it... I told him a computer file on the internet... He also explained how that sond had come full circle, hinting at how he did a mix of it and jimmy cauty remixed and then how he went back and mixed it again or something.... Maybe he was just talking about remixing the muscians that played in that song... i dunno, i couldn't quite make out all of his words. I then asked him if he wouldn't mind signing my Orbvs Terravm cover... and armed with a sharpie Lx scribed this on the front cover 2. ERic. mvch Love from Me Ultraworld! Lx. P. 99. he must of just hung out for 10-15 minutes... talking about the weird club (must have blew his mind to be booked in such a MTV commercial type club) and complaining about not knowing when he was going on that night, as he was the first act to arrive - you see Alex is spinning tonite in support of a Live PA from Europe called Hybrid and a local deejay - AK1200 ... both of whom were late to get to the club. i didn't overwhelm him with all the questions i would have asked him or the asinine things i could of just said, but instead just being in the presence of such genius was good enough for me... however, i still kick myself for not being prepared for his next question... Lx asked me if i had any rolling papers on me - doh! i fucked up my chances of getting high with the man, by leaving my dope in the car and my papers at home. oh well, there's always next time... he soon excused him self and i was left feeling so elated by the expirince... AK1200 soon comes up and moves from the hard house in to some speed garage and big beat ... I notice when Glenn walks in by his desciption... blue fisherman's had w/ glasses standing next an older hippie guy... since the gentleman i noticed come in fit the descrition to a T ... I introduced myself, and sure enough it was glenn... we chitchatted got a few drinks in us and milled about waiting for alex to start. I noticed Joe a little bit later, as he was wearing the shirt that he later gave to Lx P ~ Both Listies were cool as hell to hang out with and to meet. Like Joe said to me at one point -- we're so safe in america... everything they tell you about meeting people thru the internet isn't so bad... I had to agree, as i've tried to meet others from different lists and rave and parties in FL and never run into them... but maybe it's just this list ... there is real community here and it was fantastic to meet people of like mind ... Lx came on with a fury... having been passed the decks with the last twenty minutes of AK's set being jungle he bounced around with differnt hard core beats of different jungle / d-n-b persuasians... standing on the balconey of the club you could get a good look at Lx's technique - one of which is to be rivavled as the best of turntablism as an instrument... actually playing 2 records at once jimmying the crossfade back and forth creating a new beat with out over lapping the records sounds at all... he soon settled into a groove and played alot of dubby bass tracks, a few of which i've heard before on cds by the likes of Carl Cox ,etc. -- real funky techno stuff ... i danced my ass off thru out Lx's set. about an hour of his music, and he stepped down as Hybrid came up and played thier set. Hybrid is best described as breakbeat for Trance-heads -- i wasn't much impressed with them or AK1200 both of whom i've seen before and loved... but maybe i'm biased because it was alex at the decks but even the crowd responded more to Lx's Music (most of the hybrid set was just hype as i'll bet most of the people were there to see hybrid on name alone, whereas i know that lx would spin some quality music... but i digress...) after hybrid went off, LX took over the decks once more (no pun intended) and played another 45minutes of pure bliss... this time still keep up the same energy but digging out some real down and dirty funk festive tracks to throw down... as far as orb tracks go, it seems that alex basically played none... sure there was an orbscure sample from orbvs and what seemed like a toxygene mix... but there was none of the plateau and once more and terminus mixes that everyone raved about. Succour is an extremely Good album. it's on Warp so shouldn't be too hard to find. Has somre really cool tones that just make me warm. Quique is also Really good. On Too Pure. Has a blue cover. I really recommend this one alot. There is also a sorta companion album to this one called Polyfusia.
