Whoever thinks that people won't buy music they can get in MP3 format is dead wrong. MP3 files simply allow consumers to be smarter shoppers - they won't buy something that they've heard and know is crap. That's one reason why the record labels are so upset - because until now, you more or less had to buy something to hear it. I think there's some confusion here about 2CD vs. v2.0. There were *two* versions of Cydonia CD-Rs, v1.0 and v2.0. As far as I know, neither was 2CDs. In fact, following is Smiley's original message about the differences. JG cydonia is now doing the rounds in a 'version 2' stylee. the only difference is that 'Freely Wheely' has been replaced by 'Jam On Yer Honey'. i'm VERY pleased about this, 'cos i said way back in february last year that 'Jam On Yer Honey' was too good to be a b-side, so i hope this is the way it stays. plus, it means that 'Freely Wheely' and 'Bicycles and Tricycles' can go together as b-sides - they were originally intended to be next to each other if they were both on the album anyway... ttfn. ===== Smiley # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: From: Subject: [none] ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 16:38:57 EDT From: "Peter Henry" Subject: Re: (orb) Oopps.. and Opinions.. >Terminus... Actually, the inital release (according to Laz's page at http://www.theorb.com/releases/cydonia/index.html) was a2xCD-R of initial edits - looking like they're much longer versions than the one that's currently doing the rounds (and the CD-R that I originally got hold of - 'Version 1' - but I wasn't the one to upload it!) Agreed, even if you have the CD-R (like myself) or you downloaded it from the ftp site, we're all going to be down that shop when it finally arrives and (speaking for myself here) even if it was the same mixes as 'Version 1'... Roll on some more live dates (though from last week's '7' magazine - which I've left at work), LX states that the shows are going to be similar to the 'Bad Orb' shows that he's done recently (i.e. smaller venues and the like)... When I get back into work tomorrow, I shall type the article up... Looks like the promotional wheel has started rolling in time for an October release (fingers crossed). LX plunders a TON of stuff from the tape-Beatles. A huge part of Majestic (milliwall mix) is from them, as well as a lot of the samples on U.F.Orb- all the Vannah White samples and the "there is still no such reality as something for n-n-n-n-n-n-n-nothing", for example. So, by all means, keep it to yourself for now.... *MoonDogg* - -----Original Message----- Love the new stuff...can't get enough. It is the 'noisy aggressiveness' that I like the most about the Orb as well, and MLOB is so far my fav. I can't help but get up and get down, if you know what I mean =) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jul 2000 22:17:26 -0400 From: =?iso-8859-1?B?emVubGFirg==?= Subject: Re: (orb) Cydonia > Yes, Thank you very much to the angel who put this up for us all to hear. I second this fully. even if just to keep it on more of an underground - hardcore fans tip. we don't need island getting into the mettalica/riaa napster feeding frenzy, now do we? ;-) - -eric³ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Jul 2000 23:42:48 +0200 From: oDdjOb Subject: (orb) Drop a load ... ... an Orb a day keeps the bluesrock away ... So hi y'all! Just wanted to share some thoughts on a certain beakful of tracks some of us were lucky enough to leech recently. To my mind, some of them bear a strange sort of sadness or melancholy in them that I have not yet been able to detect in other pieces of our favourite noisejugglers. Especially those featuring vocals, don't you find? It's definitely a new aspect to their work, sometimes reminding me faintly of stuff by Smoke City (track 3, mostly). Quite amazing how they keep pushing their own limits and styles. Probably there are quite a number of hardliners on this list who wish we were back in the days of . Well, bad luck, we aren't. And as far as I'm concerned, that's a good thing. To me, the fascinating thing about the Orb has always been that they made me hear and - with my squeegy third eye (to lift a phrase from Bill Hicks) - see things I hadn't before. So it's fine, I guess, that they keep moving. Wouldn't it be a joke if one of the most progressive bands on the planet was only producing mere quotations of its own former work? So anyway, the album has an excellent flow to it - starts off nice and clean and gets harder and weirder as it proceeds and has you floating out of it in the end. All in all, to me it feels like a summing up of a lot of their work, taken one step further. Soundwise, I feel taken back to Orblivion quite often. There's the weirdness of Pomme Fritz or tracks like Montagne D'Or and Slug Dub. There's a nice and clean opener, like Little Fluffy Clouds. But always, it feels just like a reference, not like a reproduction. An orbish experience from start to end. Ahhh, and I already *love* those strings on track 2. Maybe, there could have been some more samples, all in all. Anyway, thumbs up. Yep, you most certainly can... ...The one I use (and there most be loads more out there) is Adaptec's Easy CD-Creator Deluxe 4.02 (using the 'Spin Doctor' part of the program). It's only available as part of the retail package (i.e. not the freebie one that comes with most CD Recorders)... I like this package, as it also lets you record from vinyl to CD-R (using a cable that connects your hi-fi to the sound card)... ...Other CD Creating packages (probably WinOnCD) probably also feature similar features, but I'm not sure about that... I'm selling lots of it to icelandic orbsters in my cd shop. I'm Allright = is actually my favourite track from the album and - coincidence - I just played it on my radio sho= w a few weeks ago.
