First we went to the Chesterfield Labelland tent to listen to the performance of Tipper and to get a very nice massage at this place, where you also could make your own music on computers or simply relax at the well decorated loungeroom. After the hard and noisy performance from Tipper we listen to Pressure Drop, Attica Blues and a groovy performance from Superfunk, with breakdancing on the stage and loads of disco and funk tunes. Great stuff! After a few drinks and some food we went to the I Love Techno tent to listen to the DJ-set from Richie Hawtin. Very minimal techno. Nice but not special. After that we went to the tech-house tent to listen to Darren Emmerson and his set was stunning! He came on after Jamie Anderson from the UK who was spinning already massive tunes on a very high volume. But Darren came on and hit the crowd even harder with some very banging tunes. And we were suprised by the mixing skills from this ex-Underworld DJ. Unfortunately we had to leave early because of the performance from Le Petit Orb at 19.00 hours. We got a short listen from Freq Nasty who was spinning some hard and dark breakbeats at this place before The Orb came on. We met some Dutch Orbies (Robert Jan and Johan) and listen to a hard and minimal techno set from Alex Paterson and Thomas Fehlmann. After 10 minutes of soundscapes with fragments of new material they started with some banging techno and that lasted for almost two hours. A lot of German techno from Basic Channel with all kind of soundscapes and samples mixed in. It was quit experimental and sometimes things went wrong when Alex and Thomas were mixing at the same time several records and samples together. We had some beers and several joints passed by and the hard and minimal techno gets better and better. At the end they mixed some breakbeats and drum 'n bass but mainly it was very hard and minimal techno that the boys gave us to dance to. When they started, loads of people where lying in the grass outside the tents (the weather was beautiful) but with the banging techno beats more and more people came in to dance. It had nothing to do with ambient or chillin' but DANCE was the thing! After The Orb we listen to Carl Cox at the open air Mainstage. Because of the nice weather it looks like all the 50.000 people gathered at this stage to listen and enjoy the hard but soulfull technobeats and watch the sky filled with lasers and a very impressive lightshow. Around midnight we left. It was a great festival and we're looking forward to the Lowlands Festival (four days) to come at the end of august! No Orb but about 150 acts (Underworld, Locust, Zion Train, De La Soul, Reprezant, Cypress Hill, etc.), DJ's, theatre, movies and loads of beer and smoking to do. I love summertime! Darren Emerson did leave Underworld in the last few weeks, can't remember the official reason, but it was probably something to do with Emerson wanting to concentrate on his DJ work. Underworld still carry on without Darren Emerson in the same way that Underworld existed before Emerson came along. I have a friend who has seen them play since the split. Well said. But, just looking at the situation empirically, I'd say that the latter have the lionshare of screwed-up-ness. The former are only screwed up because the latter have been making concerted efforts to screw them up for some time now. (e.g. the impact of alcohol on Native American culture) I think that the really important factor is how these materials are approached. In indigenous cultures, psychedelics are traditionally approached as entheogens, and much guidance is provided to the young initiate by the experienced shaman. That is, the psychedelic experience is thoroughly integrated in religion, ritual, cosmology, etc. We have none of that in Western culture. Psychedelic experience is written off as deviant, and psychonauts are left to fend for themselves, usually end up doing damage to themselves in the effort to acquire information, and can only share the information at the risk of persecution. I'm actually sitting here working at the hospice that cared for Terence in his final days. I was lying on the grass, reading the latest Harry Potter : fabulous ! In the end of the week end, Tom Middleton (Global Communication / Cosmos / Jedi Knights) did a housey DJ Set. When he put The Orb " A huge..." , the crowd went crazy. Same thing with FSOL "Papua new guinea". When I came back to London, I tried desperately to find the new remixes done by our beloved Andy Hughes (thanks to Rachel for the infos) : tricky thing... I finally found Rico : Shave your head CD 2 Shave your head (out of your head mix) 6.27 remixed by Andy Hughes 1999 http://www.rico.co.uk On the first listening, it reminds me of The Orb "Turn it down" a little bit. About the Raissa and Cube remixes, I didnt see them. I've seen a lot of promos and Raissa cd singles, but without any Andy hughes remixes. As for Cube, I've seen two CD singles but with the names reversed (you have to see it with a mirror, very clever marketing ploy, doh !). In my humble opinion, Orb went downhill after Kris Weston (or whatever his name is) left. Orbus Terrarum was a great album, but not nearly as good as Adventures or UFOrb. Orblivion was crap, and Cydonia doesn't sound too much better (again, IMHO)...although "Terminus" is fantastic, and the tracks with vocals are very good. But I think FSOL and Banco de Gaia keep getting better and better, whereas the Orb is on a downward slope. ;-) Speaking of FSOL, did they disband, or are they still around? I haven't heard anything since Dead Cities.... Well yeah, I am one of the sad types that consider the first two Orb albums as the definitive Orb sound, so I would probably agree with you there. As for FSOL, well I am going to annoy a lot of people by saying that they are about as arrogant as it is possible to be and they just angered me. The only record that they did that I really liked was 'Humanoid' by Stakker. Otherwise I felt that they took themselves way way too seriously. Incidentally,I dont think the Orb are on a downward slope, more of a sideways shift - I rather rate 'Cydonia'. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Aug 2000 09:51:01 -0400 (EDT) From: Chain Reaction Subject: (orb) fsol trivia >....the only record that they did that I really liked was 'Humanoid' by Stakker.... The latest info on this can be found on Nick Woodfine's fsol page: http://www.newdigitaldesign.co.uk/fsol/fsol.html It sadly says: "New album delayed until very early 2001. Single out before Christmas 2000. New ISDN album later this year." Kind of an Orbish feel to it, don't you think...? Steph... IMHO, each orb album has its own feeling/flavour, which i find to make an appropriate soundtrack to different times in my life. while ABTU was during a particularly mischeivous time, i didn't actually enjoy Pomme Fritz until months later when i was feeling kinda twisted. so even if your intial reaction to cydonia is negative, you'll probably buy it in october, listen to it, and it'll grow on ya, regardless. =) rachel # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Aug 2000 12:35:01 -0400 From: "Sean Wolfe" Subject: Re: (orb) FSOL "Howat, Simon" Wrote: > As > for FSOL, well I am going to annoy a lot of people by saying that they are > about as arrogant as it is possible to be and they just angered me. I have to totally agree. Although i did enjoy "dead cities" and "ISDN", thier attitude just put's me off so much, that it's hard for me to pick up these albums and enjoy them. Anyone can tell how big of an Ass they are, if anyone has read or seen thier interviews. Although in the recent debate, I can't really say I feel the same way about the Orb as others on the list. I loved U.F. Orb to Death, and ABTU was great when I was listening to it. But Orbus Terraum is by far my fav, and thier peak in thier career in my eyes. When Orblivion came out, I wasn't too thrilled. I though it was alright, but not what I was hoping for at the time (keep in mind, i was floored by OT). But eventually the album grew quite a bit on me... (I'm now sorta able to listen to Toxygene, I've previously had a hard time listening to it, because whenever I heard the bassline, the "Macarena" popped into my head) But to write it off as "crap", I think is a little harsh! I have a feeling that Cydonia will do the same to me... And also keep in mind, we haven't heard the real version yet!
