Vince has been a part of this list since I joined on like 2 years ago. He is definitely one of the more knowledgeable electronic music fans on the list. I was a lost orb soul and he was my guiding light. Thanks V!! His recent comments on Cydonia were a bit extreme for Vince but I'm sure he has good reason. As someone else pointed out in regards to ground breaking orb material, 'No relaxing, now get back to work f*!#ing with my head!', I am going to have to agree. Cydonia is lacking when you think about it in those terms. I like it but not on the same level as the first 4 releases. Its better than orblivion! Anyhow, get off Vince's arse!! I really appreciate that! :-) As he implied, there is a BIG difference. I personally think that Adventures, Aubrey Mixes, and UFOrb are among the greatest albums ever made. And I really like Orbus a LOT. But my personal opinion of Pomme Fritz, Orblivion, and SOME of Cydonia (recall, if you will, that I LOVE Terminus and the tracks with vocals) is somewhat less. But the same goes for Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd, DEVO, Jean-Michel Jarre, et al.--although I love ALL these groups/ artists, I think each has produced at least one (and in some instances, MANY) terrible album(s). Doesn't change the fact that I still like them. Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here has long been one of my favorites, but I detest The Wall with a passion. But I still love Floyd. As for my own music, well, yeah, I've done some of my own. Some Orb-listers have even had the misfortune of being subjected to it. But just because my own music isn't up to par with, say, Herbie Hancock or Jerry Lee Lewis doesn't mean I don't have the right to express my own opinion. I mean, I would kill to have a voice like the guys in The Backstreet Boys, but it still doesn't change my opinion of their music (which I personally think is mediocre at best). Takes a helluva lot more than that to offend me. ;-) As far as "selling out" is concerned, I'd probably be the last to bitch about that. *I* would be the first one in line to graciously accept $1 million for something I made up in a matter of minutes. I have no shame about that. But I certainly wouldn't consider ANY of the Orb's albums as "selling out." I can't even think of anyone within fifty miles of me who listens to anything except "classic rock" and country music.... Orb is totally alien to them. Now if the Orb starts making music with lyrics like, "I'm gonna rock ya tonight baby, all night loooong, yeaaaaah!" or "My wife's cheatin' on me with her cousin," then I could say they've "sold out." (Gotta admit--they WOULD make for interesting samples....) As I mentioned in an earlier post, I still claim the right to express my opinion about the music, favorable or otherwise. A classic, yes..but the song was "commerical" from the beginning. I don't think Ricki Lee Jones would have ever heard it had it not been so widely played when it came out. Mick Jones from the Clash said the same thing when they sold "Should I Stay or Should I Go" for that Levi's advert. According to him it was not their best song. And I will be damnned before I let anyone call the Clash sell outs. Last time I checked, when I entered a studio, it costs $$$ to make an album. Perhaps Orb sold LFC to VW, so they could not only feed themselves, but also to make Cydonia, to pay for live equipment, to secure performance rights for all those film goodies we see to blow us away when they play live..., etc. I sometimes think as fans we think this great music and everything need to make it just falls out of their arse when they sit on the loo. A lot of bands, as much as you love them, do create albums that are subpar with the rest of their work. In fact, most of the bands I love do it all the time. [snip] >This kind of pigeonholing and genre factionalism is really silly. Well, there's philsophy and then there's brute musical characteristics, which unfortunately tend to have the same name (e.g. "ambient"). As an analytical tool, the latter is usually silly and artistically confining, but the former can be quite useful. (cf. Eno) >I mean, scary to me is something >beautiful in a way, an eerie ambience.... I think eeriness is a beautiful >thing, anybody else know what I mean? Am I just going off on my own tangent >nobody else gets? No no, quite right! "Scary", in an entertainment context, is not so much frightening as exciting, like a roller-coaster ride or something, playing around with your body's automatic responses. "Eerieness" is psychological fear-engineering ... Lynch and Tarkovsky spring to mind ... - ----- The gist of my comments about Cydonia, not having heard so much as a second of it -- and not being too worried because backlash on new albums from band-centered mailing lists is inevitabile -- was that the "originality" issue that was brought up is pretty much a non-issue for the music industry and its consumer-oriented record-marketing paradigm. From an artistic standpoint, indeed "change is good", but conformity is not, and it seems that the fundamental objections raised against /Cydonia/ are coming from the perspective that, as a stylistic move, for the Orb anyway, embracing breaks/jungle is gratuitous or artificial. I find some sympathy with this, as I always saw and valued the Orb, and ambient music in general, as an /alternative/ to "dance music". To me, this had as much or more to do with the pacing of the album as the style; thus I'm more dismayed by bite-size songs than genre-hopping. There's no reason in principle why the Orb couldn't make a d&b album that's wildly original, but, to draw from my comment above, that seems to be a genre defined more by style than philosophy. But even if /Cydonia/ doens't end up embodying the things that many of us traditionally love about the Orb, it may garner them many new fans and improved record sales, and perhaps even pay their bills -- serious real-world pressures that a professional musician has to deal with. Geeks like you and me only make up a small fraction of the record-buying public. Lots of people don't want to be "stretched" by their stereo, but find solace in sounds to which to drink alcohol and attempt to feel hip. The electronic music world has been generating formulaic crap for years, which only brings it on par with every other genre, because the industry runs the show. But there's music criticism, and then there's enjoying records. Records don't have to reinvent the wheel to be enjoyable, and I reckon LX has enough tricks up his sleeve to keep us happy for some time! - -=Seofon Ambient Temple of Imagination > http://www.a-toi.com > http://www.mp3.com/atoi double-disc anthology Y2KAOS now available! > http://www.a-toi.com/y2kaos # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 13:35:16 -0400 From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?zenlab=AE?= Subject: Re: (orb) cydonia scam >: >it *is* a CD-r -- maybe they included the hamlet of kings song just to >: >'boost' sales... : surely these guys shouldn't be selling this item? whats going on? how do : they justify making money off the orb, without the orb getting a cent??? : this is totally different from mp3 sharing etc IMHO i know -- it sucks. - -eric # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 14:26:25 -0400 From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?zenlab=AE?= Subject: Re: (orb) Cydonia, not Cydonia Seofon - you rock! - a very intelligent post, indeed. - -eric # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 19:08:09 -0400 (EDT) From: Anthony Bryan Subject: Re: (orb) cydonia scam > >: >it *is* a CD-r -- maybe they included the hamlet of kings song just to > >: >'boost' sales... > > : surely these guys shouldn't be selling this item? whats going on? how do > : they justify making money off the orb, without the orb getting a cent??? > : this is totally different from mp3 sharing etc IMHO > > i know -- it sucks. sucks, but I don't see how its any different than other stores selling promos. this is the same list that was going to put up, umm, big money, none of which was going to the orb, to hear unreleased bootlegs of cool stuff. ant # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 22:13:51 -0400 From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?zenlab=AE?= Subject: Re: (orb) cydonia scam : sucks, but I don't see how its any different than other stores selling : promos. this is the same list that was going to put up, umm, big money, : none of which was going to the orb, to hear unreleased bootlegs of cool : stuff. those are covering distribution costs mostly. - -eric # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 22:12:41 -0400 From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?zenlab=AE?= Subject: Re: (orb) Vince the AntiChrist Frank : Although I will agree with you that Toxygene is tolerable at best, I : will also say, " You know I think you rule. why does everyone bash toxygene. i loved it from the first time i heard it, and the jungle remixes of it rock - with car crashes and the hyperactive dub sounds a'la perpetual dawn (album version) so i ask you, your own question: : But, seriously, have you been snacking on the local shubbery?? ;-) toxygene was a fun track. period. - -eric³ # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 22:00:44 -0400 From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?zenlab=AE?= Subject: Re: (orb) Date: Wed, 9 Aug 2000 15:10:33 -0400 : ===>Hello?! I do like the remixes and the box in which they came. I even like the cheeky video for it. It is just the album version I don't like. Keep in mind; I can honestly say this is the only Orb song I don't like. I have every proper release and out of all the tracks they have ever produced, my not liking only one song is permissible.
