In a perspective view the Orb are the Rolling Stones of techno - real old man rockers. I have to say that "u.f.orb" is their crown! Don't you miss those obvious drum and dub bass lines?, yet still "Orblivion" is a well put together album for examples "Asylum", "Molten love" and "Delta MkII" no obvious classics to me like "Blue Room" and "Towers of Dub". The same goes for "Cydonia" suggestive and beautiful melodies this one is still under my microscope. "Terminus" Is for me total bliss. Proof on that you still can have faith in The Orb. Patchwork normally uses no samples,I mean they do their sounds theirself with keybords, drums and so on.There is a connection to Berlin, cause Diorama contains some work from the Berlin-DJ Chris Zippel, could there be a connection to Thomas Fehlmann, perhaps. Besides I think there is a sample in the Bedouin Film Mix,coming from a Patchwork record, but I`m not too sure. First I thought the synthie structure from GD would come frome Peace Orchestra, now I``m not too sure if it comes from there,it``s the same style,but.... Do anyone know that? Patchwork is my favorite german chill out since some years projekt, they have 4 record released till now, really flowing instrumental stuff. I love Cydonia a lot,the drumming is really great, but as on Orblivion, there is sometimes such a poppy melodysynthie in it,I can live with that,of course, but I would give a lot if I could take that out,it is in Ralf for example between the strong and orby drumming. Why didn``t they throw that out? The orb``s problem is,that they were too good from the beginning, there is no real raising possible, cause their master record Orbus Terrarum. But I think their way to bring in all the other styles is a very interesting variation, still my favourite projekt. No reason a song can't be both cheesy /and/ good (or at least enjoyable)! As far as LFC and all that goes, "selling out" is, for the most part, how musicians make their money. You can make more money off a single good license than from every record you've ever sold. That's why musicians have publishers and agents: to find opportunities to "exploit" (the industry's word, not mine) the compositions. So I'm all for my favorite artists selling out ... Artistic compromise is another matter, though. A friend of mine who just returned from Istanbul reported that the accompaniment to boarding and luggage-stowing was some acid-warp visuals on the projection screens and "Little Fluffy Clouds" on the speakers.
