I really have a deep respect for musicians who are verbally outspoken against drug use, and when I find out that they're doing them all along, it's really disappointing. As for Ozzy Osbourne, I respect him too, primarily because he admits that he's constantly struggling with alcohol. In other words, he doesn't go around preaching that he's alcohol free when in fact he's not; rather, he says that he's trying his best to get off it, but occasionally has relapses. If he becomes totally, 100% sober, then even better. But in the meantime, I'm glad that he's trying.... I recently read an article which said that Moby licensed EVERY track on the album for some sort of commercial use: http://more.abcnews.go.com/sections/entertainment/DailyNews/musiclicense000811.html That's just ridiculous. You can't tell me that Moby enters the studio without thinking about licensing money. It's definately affecting the music he makes - and that's selling out. I have no problem with the Orb using LFC for the VW ad. For one, it was a really cool ad. Second, the track was nearly ten years old at the time. And finally, it is the only Orb track you will hear in a commercial, unlike Fatboy Slim whose song "Praise You" is used in at least 2 commercials and 1 movie commercial all airing in the same time frame - (I heard it last night in a Mercedes Benz commercial) As long as the Orb doesn't enter the studio with $$$ in their heads based on licensing, I don't think they're selling out. Although after hearing Cydonia, I have to wonder what their motives behind this work are. - -d ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 10:57:35 -0600 From: "Phil Blake" Subject: (orb) Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 17:58:23 +0100 The Dogstar 389 Coldharbour Lane, Brixton SW9 8LQ (2 mins from Brixton Tube) www.dogstarbar.co.uk BOOK A FLOOR FOR YOUR PARTY NOW - RING HEIDI ON 020 7733 7515 Wednesdays - ELECTROCUTED 9pm 2.30am FREE admission Residents Andrew Curley & Sherman will be calling on Aug. 16th: Alex Paterson (The Orb) Aug. 23rd:[tbc[ Aug. 30th: RICHARD SEN [Bronx Dogs] Anyone going to this or know if it's definitely on? I was dubious as to whether he would be as Mass & Dogstar are often listing him incorrectly. I spoke to him about a few things including Cydonia which he said is due for release on Oct 23rd (fingers crossed). He blamed the current MP3's doing the rounds on Napster but didn't seem too bothered about it and said he was going to give it away (I presume he means the current version) for free on his Bad Orb site anyway (Doesn't sound like a money grabbing sell-out to me!) Apparently the Jimmy Cauty mix of Once More will not be released at all as he already has enough remixes . It will only be on DJ Promos (So expect some MP3's shortly!) His set was ***King excellent. Cant remember all tracks but it started with a System 7 track and included loads of Electro ( Nucleus Etc ) some dodgy Kraftwerk covers ( by Coconut or something) all this with Chill Out constantly fading in and out throughout the set! It was as if he'd nicked my record collection. I've recently been copying my old Electro Vinyl on to CD so it was great to hear it mixed so well. Overall a top night and free as well! And I also got my sealed U.F. Orb double LP signed. The mix CDs are very nice, but the mag itself just doesn't really do it for me... It's like they're trying too hard to be that stereotypical "rave culture" type magazine. I don't think that the Orb have sold out. I find that a bands first and sometimes second albums are the most creative and rich. I think this is especially true for bands making electronic music. These first albums are generally put together over many years and released as singles before any major record label gets involved in the process. The musical equipment is generally older and limited in it's capabilities, but it's all that they have to work with and they find creative means to make the best of it. They always seem to have simple beats with highly addictive hooks and samples. Once a record label gets involved things change It's much harder to be creative under a deadline. They have to spend more time touring and less time in the studio. As the band makes more money and they purchase more fancy equipment and cast aside the old "out of date" instruments. The thing is, they don't always know when to stop using all the new bells and whistles. When this happens the songs can become overly complex. The band members often want to grow as musicians and break away from being DJs who make music. They often trim back on the samples and hooks that work and attempt to create their own. This is great if they are really excellent musicians, but if not these hooks never quite live up to the sampled versions, or are just missing altogether. (If you listen to early Orb like "LFC", "Star 6 7 8 & 9", and "Outlands" you can totally understand what I'm talking about.) I'm not saying I don't like the Orb anymore. I just don't find the music that they make now as sexy or addictive as their older material. I don't mind that they make money by letting companies pay to use their songs in for advertising. Everyone has to make a living. I think that if they hired some group of "super producers" to crank out chart hits like NSync, Spice Girls, and numerous others, then we could say that they are sellouts. Don "Don't make me angry. Someone else mentioned old Orb fans being disappointed with the new direction the band takes. I have been an Orb fan from the very beginning of their States side exposure. For me, having worked in radio at the time, it was during the single-disc ABTU days. I have always looked forward to Orb's advance from one phase of their career into another. A good example of this for me is reading the inner sleeve of UFOrb and seeing "on are way home on our way home..." being discreetly nestled in with the credits. For three years, I could hardly wait to hear what they were going to do next. Their next proper studio album was OT, so rather than having it come as a big shock or disappointment, for me it was more like, "Aaah, they DID come back home." LX's talking about taking over America in the booklet included in Auntie Aubrey also prepared me for the TV advert, Toxygene, and the "dreaded" vocal tracks on Cydonia. What more can we as fans want? LX says he is going to do something and he does it. Whether being on his way home or taking over America, Orb have always backed words with actions. If THAT isn't integrity, I don't know what is. Beyond keeping their word, who the hell cares if they make money doing it, as long as they are upfront about it. In my book they have been. End of discussion from this camp. Ghost Dancing makes me cry every time I hear it. Stunning... especially that "thump-uh-dump....dump-dump" beat! I don't know why you can't believe people would post their opinion -- favorable or unfavorable, that's what this list is for. I don't find it surprising that many of the ol'school orb list members might feel slightly alienated with the direction the orb has taken. I think it's a very normal reaction -- when anything/anyone you care about changes what made it special to you in the first place do you ALWAYS adapt/react positively? (If I did I'd still be with my first girlfriend, ughhh!!!). > i hope 'once more' goes huge and shits in all the faces > of you who talk smack. FUCK THE HATERS! Yeah?, maybe some of the people who talk 'smack' could ov addressed their issues more tactfully. The orb are just guys that love pot and music -- sellouts they are not -- critical opinions toward them or their music ought to be addressed in a respectful manner. -j Still plenty for me to explore on planet OT until 10/23. >> # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 08:19:36 -0500 From: John Moxness Subject: RE: (orb) whale crap Let's forget about this issue, we're going round in some sort of circle. I can only speak for myself but I was only saying that I personally enjoyed the Orb's other albums, ABTU and OT more than Orblivion. People who are saying the Orb sold out have a very delicate, narrow definition of "artistic integrity," something the Orb never claimed to have :) and yet have preserved. Appearing on ONE VW advert doesn't compromise their music and they never laid claim to not being a band that would appear on a commercial; they never said they were against this. THe Orb are my favorite band and I love everything they make and think all their music is superior to the other stuff coming out of "electronic" music. I LOVE Orblivion and will LOVE Cydonia, I'm sure, because the Orb have an intelligent, liquid style that encompasses "genres"; I was simply saying that I enjoyed ABTU and OT more than their more beat-oriented output.... And what's wrong with that? >i cannot believe some of these comment about orb selling out, especially >the >one about after hearing cydonia questioning their motives. its becomming >more >and more obvious why the people who had cydonia did not want to release to >dogs on it. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 08:42:16 PDT From: "That Ambient Guy" Subject: (orb) Some sample stuff.... I'm the one who was questioning their motives about making Cydonia. BUT, obviously you didn't read the WHOLE message because that was a small part at the end of explaining why I DIDN'T THINK THE ORB WAS SELLING OUT with the VW ad.... I questioned their motives because: I wonder if they went into the studio and made this album for the explicit purpose of selling songs for adverts, or films, or huge radio play. If they did, then it is selling out, if they didn't then they are NOT selling out. bottom line. All I did was QUESTION their motives. As a fan who has spents LOTS of money on albums, singles, vinyl, concerts, dj appearances I think I have a right to question them in a public forum with other fans. I will still purchase the album, I will still purchase the singles, I will still go see them live because I appreciate their talent and what they have accomplished. My questioning their motives is not an accusation of selling out, or anything else, just a QUESTION asked in an open discussion forum. If LX wrote me in person(or I read an interview, etc.) and explained the way in which this album got recorded, and it was purely because he wanted to artistically explore more diverse music with vocals, etc then I would be perfectly happy and appreciate Cydonia a LOT more. Right now, when I listen to it, I have questions, which affect my listening experience. >wishy washy these 'fans' are and so quick to criticize the orb for >doing >something different. wishy washy my ass!!! I've been into the Orb for over 6 years, and ever since the day I saw Le Petite Orb with LX and DJ Lewis, they have been my favorite group. Do you think Pomme Fritz was "something different"? I think so, and when it was released, it took me a while to 'get it' but I enjoyed it because it was different. I LOVE DIFFERENT. That is my problem with Cydonia because it is not different, it is the same old electronica you can hear in many other bands. >i hope 'once more' goes huge and shits in all the faces of you who >talk >smack. FUCK THE HATERS! fuck you too, buddy >Sorry if im not stuck in the past and love to see forward movement. Obviously you weren't a fan when OT was released because you would know what 'forward movement' meant, and the impact that album had. I love the forward movement of the Orb, BUT forward to me means exploring uncharted territory with new sounds/techniques no one else does. Cydonia, to me, doesn't have this exploration that they are so good at... does anyone agree? end of discussion for me. ------------------------------ End of orb-digest V2 #352 *************************
