Small indie bands and underground electroinic groups are not sold out becuase the fans understand what the musicians are doing and are curiuos about the different musical directions the various albulms take. Large bands can be sold out when there are lots of people who like them becuase of their image and buy the albulm s becuase they sound nice. These 'fans' have no conception of how the music is structured and what the artist is trying to express. At this point the band is being used as filler, muzak, smooth jazz of sorts. When the bands marketinng/radio play/hipness has got them a large enough base of 'fans' who have no clue what the music is doing then the bands have sold out. but then again maybe i am totally wrong. merrick ps. if you couldn't intuit from the above whether i think the orb have sold out or not: I don't think the orb have sold out. pss. I personally think tool is extremely creative musically but suspect that becuase most of their audience are metalheads, rather than acidheads, the fans don't really have a clue what tool are doing. thus they have sold out, but purposely so. I'm not looking for someone to explain why I should enjoy it, I'm looking for reasons as to why they made it. Was it for money? was it because they wanted to articistically? It's just a simple question I have, nothing more, nothing less. I can still enjoy listening to Cydonia... And for the "why" part, it's because of their history. This album just doesn't seem to "fit" with their past albums. Maybe it does in a way, but it's not what I would have expected. again, this is MY opinion as a fan of several years. If you disagree, then fine - I'm here to discuss and possibly learn something, not be attacked for stating opinions. >I don't need someone to tell me why I should be enjoying it. >I don't need someone explaining to me why it's so great or different. You're twisting my words. I just wondered why they went in this direction. I can make decisions on my own whether to enjoy the music, and I said I do enjoy Cydonia, I just have a lingering question based on their older albums. >why does it have to be different? > >this kinda smacks of elite-ism... > >"brand x is great coz it's different!" >"oh god! brand x dares make something which isn't entirely different! brand >x sucks!" hmm, don't really kow what to say here. I think almost everyone on this list enjoys the Orb because they are different than most bands. They're uncategorizeable, which is what makes them unique. If that makes me or anyone else "elitist", then so what? "Oh god, everybody else likes this so I should too. God forbid I enjoy something different and be labeled an elitist" As for Rachel's comments, I didn't mean to imply that all film music is bad(AND SELLING MUSIC FOR COMMERCIALS IS NOT BAD AS LONG AS FUTURE MUSIC IS NOT AFFECTED BY THE ARTISTS GREED IN HOPING TO SELL MORE MUSIC FOR COMMERCIALS), I enjoy Danny Elfman's soundtracks quite a bit. >(has anyone thought that maybe its not the Orb's music that's >changing, so much as it is the individual's TASTE in music that's > >mutated?) I know you've been a fan for a long time, Rachel but you can't expect this statement to be taken seriously. If you played U.F.Orb next to Cydonia, you think they're the same? My TASTE has remained pretty steady. I didn't like diva vocals 10 years ago, 5 years ago, or now! If they're BROke, I think it's Island that's screwing them over. If they wanted, they should release music on another label. Go out and Dj more. I would see them anytime. I would see Andy, LX, or anyone if they came around more. You can't sit back, make ONE album in the last five years and complain about being broke. Put out more stuff. I'd buy it. If Andy needs a place to stay, I'd let him live in my house for free! and feed him! Come to Milwaukee Andy! I STILL LOVE THE ORB!!!! Once again I have been soo Orbed right! Did any one hear the god damn drum roll?? Wow! those are what? ... bagpipes .feat accordian staccato samples? Yummy, a strings orchestration. I just got shivers!! ... And I would like to thank all the higher powers here at work. Rule: We as humans are firstly and majorly visual beings... *except when the Orb is played within ear shot!!! This music will transform my eye sight anyday without heisitation. Alex, you just made my hair grow with all this overdubbing!! I like the jungle beat that is subliminally chugging along. (off topic)It reminds me of all the B.S. that has been on the list lately. It is there the whole time, except that when I want to hear other good things to pick up on and rythm with... I go off on that stuff instead. A second and third listen to this though, I just delete all your fucking stupid E-mail Orb-bashers. I think too many kids have access to computers sometimes. It is cool though cause the Orb is timeless and we all will grow into our own! "Er ehhhmmm" Ahhh, those twinkely, light, stereo keypad notes just fluttered in again! It is like a new joyful explosion in my ears everytime :)Ahhh, no rushing it here. Don't horns tweak so well!?! .... and that slurping gushing sound just buzzed in. Check this out! (Like near the 2:00 min mark) Lx made me feel like I am wavesliding and slipping into the barrel on a sucking dredger at a spot I was just at last week! Patricks AFB during our first Atlantic Hurricane. This is the noise; ehh? Those popping and laser fazer sounds yeild more orbsonic everytime. MMMMMMM, Those high tinker bealls make me feel younger. I think I was just welled with a class of obeidient school children going back to school. (Ohhhhhhhhh!) (2:12)and (2:24). And I am like a daisy that grows better when the music is turned on! Yeah! there is that slurpping sound again. I feel like I just got spit on or some big tongue swipped a lick off me!!! Just like surfing. Kids, I suggest y'all listen to this o! ne and pretend like you are surf board riding -n- trow the sheets over ya when that slurp kicks in! Chaka!! I am not crazy. Horns sound lovely, and more slurpping of the soup(2:36) no rushing it here at all... and (3:43) Holy Shit! that is a wave cresting I heard (4:31)OOps!! I just screamed in the public library and had to apologize to the elderlylady ... Ahhh the Orb do it again. She would not even know Orb Classic rockebelly!! Next is "Once More". Oh yeah (1:20) this is the sub- chug - dub I dream of in the back of my mind!!! It is inflicting IMHO. (off topic) Right now I want to announce that the Orb are telling us like it is with their musical productions: "Music and the new dimensions ... and further than before." Duh! No confusing it. It is right there for any Orb doubters. They did not sell out.... it is just a new dimension. Alex and co. may have produced some lame stuff in the past... but this future leaves me thrilled. The inclusion of this diva's voice is not a mistake. Love it. The decision to include this diva's voice has brilliantly cut into my skull. Aki is a healthy incision and a precise, precious performance for future collaborations. Lucky her. Cut me, or if you don't dig the inventiveness of what Lx has got going on; cut yourself!!! IMHO it is a call to arms for all other so called instrumental electronic artists. If you have not followed the Orb in the past ten years or so... you soon will. "For sure more better ten years estan aqui" Try and book a diva like madaam Aki and see if she blows you off. This babe is a star and can do what she likes hopefully more with the Orb. Lastly, Ghostdancing... another beaut. Sounds alot more mellower; like Portishead more than that hunting-Icelandic-bitch! Eehh, well after the above; I think Nina has more of a chance too. My next girlfriend's name is going to be Nina. (sigh) (Sniff, sniff) She sounds sexy enough to sell out though. She is going to be crying and dying alot more with the holy ghost if the Orb keep producing this wonderwall of soundscapes!! Please don't cry without me. If the Orb think that sex sells... which it does; then that is the reason here. Not a track to dissapoint, yet I still would love to see her package... I mean the Cydonia package. Rachel said: >ok, can't contain myself any longer: Neither can I... but for slightly different reasons. I haven't been bothered to read all this crap about selling out, if Alex was going to sell out on us, I doubt Cydonia wouldn be the masterpiece it is/will be - it'd be another Orblivion (i.e. imho A Mostly Bad Thing). No, this is the reason _I_ am making this rare (and hopefully not completely boring or worthless) addition to the list: >this is ABSURD! they're both broke - andy's been living in a council flat, >from what i understand, and is now desparately searching for other work. >LX isn't rolling in it, either - (snip) Erm... fecking hell. When Smiley gets back (we never hear enough of him imho :) I'd really like some clarification on this; but for now I'm going to ask a question: if Rachel's comment is true (I don't doubt it btw), then where the flying arse-bollock is all our money going to? Did the upwards of 100+ British Pounds that I've spent on Orb material, all go to Island? According to Big George (www.biggeorge.co.uk - the SoS articles are _required_ reading!!), who regularly publishes in Sound On Sound magazine UK, Courtney Love with "that" fantastic speech she made, and everyone else who laments about the state of the music industry as is... Alex gets either none of my cash, or about 5% of it. Well, I certainly suspected this - I've just finished two years in a Music Technology course, part of which was about "music business." It became quite clear what the industry had become, and this made me think: is Alex getting something for all this? and for that matter, does he own his music? (as Orb that is, I know FFWD he co-owns with those he worked with on it) Now I find out that they probably really are both broke. Fscking wonderful . I was all ready to go charging down to my local record store to get Cydonia and Once More on CD _and_ vinyl (really) the moment each were released, but the fact that my cash probably won't be going to Alex and Thomas (who, I assume, is still working with the good doctor), is almost stopping me! *sigh* Surely this is a bigger issue than wether lx is "selling out"? Even if he was, it wouldn't bother me if he was happy with the deal... it only would bother me if for some reason it adversely affected the music (doubtful). But that's not the real issue - I want my money to go to Alex, damnit, and I want him to do what the hell he likes with it, if it means I get my Orb fix! Robert Fripp has The Right Idea with Discipline - Alex did The Right Thing with FFWD which IS the best thing he's done full stop, anyway - _and_ as far as I know Island didn't get anything from it (I certainly hope not, anyway). Well, I certainly won't be going to Island to publish my music - or any other major for that matter. And that's if I even had the chance! It's too "underground," the A&R blokes would say, too non-commercial - it won't "sell" (translation: it won't add more than a few tens of thousands to their profits, won't get their lawyers another few Porches, therefore is not worth it). Well they can take their suits and their Boyzone's and fly right up their own arse. Apologies for the essay, but believe me - I am one _very_ pissed off Orb fan. Hey, I was just wondering....what did everyone 'expect' from Cydonia? Before they heard the snippets that were originally posted earlier this year. Did anyone really expect another ABTU or OT? Personally, and I have yet to hear Cydonia, and disregarding all I have read on the list, I expect Alex and whoever he collaborates with to make an album consisting of different styles ,beats, samples, noises, tweets, parps and bits and pieces that truly defy definition. an album that is uniquely The Orb....That's why I love 'em. In fact it's fair to say that I have never known what to truly expect from them, each album has it's own feel, and that's probably why I have never been disappointed, and listen to them all equally as much. Just an opinion mind. BTW, I plan on being at the Knitting factory - Hollywood, just as soon as I can find out when the tix are on sale. spongebob squarepants np-- Wet Wet Wet - Popped in - Souled out. I was just listening to Orblivion for old time's sake.. and I was noticing something kinda cool.... The transition between Bedouin and Molten Love TOTALLY sounds like the transitions of every song on disc 2 of Meat Beat Manifesto's Subliminal Sandwich. Just thought I'd point that out...(Hmm... more I listen, all the songs have transitions like that... Maybe the Orb took some style points from Jack and the boys?) BTW, Any other Zombies on this list?
