Gracious hellos Orbearnauts: Steph had posted "if the Orb will tour" this Cydonia gimmick or not and I am afraid not in the U.S. I do think that there will be a date or two for the Intl. though. I just had spoken with the "anti-guru of rave" himself, Duncan, and indeed he cannot take the Orb on tour. I am not sure if it was because of the developing BADORB label / website, or if it was because of the number of vocal projects (more members on the road = more friction on tour)or the ever elusive money problem. I am sure it was a combo in and of itself. Anyhow, the time and opporitunity for turntable artists is not going to be lost if the Orb don't come to U.S. Did anyone hear that more turntables were sold than any other "instrument" (piano or guitar)? "...how it feels to be this alive?" I also asked Alex if he had ever tried wavesliding... He told me of a magical lake in Italy, and he had also tried the Sport of Kings (ancient polyneisian hawaiians invented surfing) down under!! ..in Austrailia. As if you all had not had enough Survivor/Ozzie laced propaganda!!! Anthony Bryan has in his possesion new photos of Alex and spherical community members in Jax's club Evolution. He also has a flyer from the show. All of this will be scanned onto his electric Pompano website ASAP. He said himself that they are great! I think Alex is great even if he can't package the Orb on tour in the US 2,000. Maybe someday he will come to my home state and "Run for the Turtles" on the "Whitest Sand in the World." I for one certainly appreciate it. (If you ever need a favor from someone in Los Angeles, just ask.) :) That said, (and I know what a pain setting up a tree is), I think we (the members of the tree) need to discuss a few things. Perhaps a a disposable eGroup list, so we don't clutter the main Orblist? My main concern is the number of branches at each generation; the way it is currently set up (and considering the number of CD-Roms involved), it could easily take 4-6 months to get this distributed. AFAIC, once I've gone to the trouble of extracting the files, I'd rather burn more copies than fewer. Even upping it to three copies from each of us makes distribution much faster. We may also want to discuss some sort of community standards as far as reimbursement for those making copies. I know that opinion on the "value" of CD-Rs varies greatly on this list... ;) Does anyone else think another, temporary mailing list would be a good idea? I mean, I find that it is much easier to match beats with vinyl than with cds (particularly if you're limited to the kind that doesn't even have pitch control). Plus the vocoding software that a lot of CD players use for pitch control is not so good (when you want to speed up or slow down a digital recording you have to process it in such a way so as to either spread out or squish up the samples, and if you do so too much you get distortion). Whereas, with wax being analog, you can speed up or slow down and still get the same clean sound. Plus you have direct tactile feedback from the records, which is nice. In the end it's a personal choice, but I like vinyl personally. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 07:38:34 PDT From: "That Ambient Guy" Subject: (orb) muziq >Lunatic Harness is my favorite. > >Nick I second that motion. If you are looking at CD players, check out some of the newer ones that have the huge jog wheel for pitch adjustments. The only CD player that doesn't have it that I'd still suggest looking at are the Denons. I love my DN-1000F's. Don't waste your time on any of the Gemini CD players. I've heard more people complain about theirs dying than I care to remember... If you are serious about mixing CD's, don't waste your time on trying to do it with stock CD players either. Granted, you can get creative with the pause button, but it is way too much effort for so little result. > Plus the > vocoding software that a lot of CD players use for pitch control is not so > good (when you want to speed up or slow down a digital recording you have > to process it in such a way so as to either spread out or squish up the > samples, and if you do so too much you get distortion). > Whereas, with wax being analog, you can speed up or slow down and > still get the same clean sound. The only pitch control CD players that I've heard produce odd sounding music when pitched up or down a lot are the first generation master tempo units. (Master tempo is a bad name for the feature -- what it does is hold the pitch of the song in place while allowing you to only alter the tempo. A great way to keep the chipmunk effect from getting out of control.) But from my last check, we're at least three generations into that type of software and it sounds fine. (My experience anyway.) > Plus you have direct tactile feedback from > the records, which is nice. This is unarguable. I love my 1200's for this very reason. It's this whole visual/tactile feedback that you get from wax that CD's just can't do. My only gripe with wax is that if you have to lug it around, it's damn heavy. You can pack a lot more CD's into less space. > In the end it's a personal choice, but I like vinyl personally. Exactly. One thing to consider though is whether you intend to take your gig on the road. If you are mostly doing weddings, non-rave/dance events, then you'll probably find CD's to be handier. You'll be able to find your music much more easily and deal with people (esp. in wedding situations) that want you to play something that they own. And of course, you can take a crap load more CD's with you than you can vinyl. OTOH, if you want to mostly focus on dancey/techno/house/ambient/stuff then go wax. You'll find most of that is available on wax before its out on CD (if it even ever touches CD). Plus, if you go to a gig, they are most likely to have 1200's for you to use which means you'll have to bring your CD equipment and find a place to setup at each event. No fun... Another thing to think about if you want to do the latter but have to do more of the former, is to get CD players and then one stock no-pitch turntable. Then you can buy wax, burn it to CD, and mix with that. Not as much fun as mixing with wax, but at least you get the music which in the end is what matters the most. - -Steve - -- ______________________________________________________________________________ Steve Shah (sshah@planetoid.org) | SysAdmin/Coder/Gabbernaut/DJ/Writer/Minister http://www.planetoid.org | We're not dropping out, we're infiltrating. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Life is best measured in beats per minute. CHEAP! i unfortunatley am using my home CD player with my turntables but i do get the benefits of the burner/MP3 advantage. in a nutt shell they both have pluses and minuses. on this topic i have a gemini PT-2000 II direct drive turntable i am lookin to get rid of and replace with a 1200 to match my other one. they are nice and have reverse, pitch bend and +/- 10 pitch control (all things the 1200 doesnt). it is in like brand new condition, i bought it a year ago. just looking to upgrade. if you might be interested in purchasing it or trading some rare orb records for this table, or have questions e-mail me at ovation15@aol.com gemini In a message dated Wed, 13 Sep 2000 10:53:52 AM Eastern Daylight Time, Steve Shah writes: << On Wed, Sep 13, 2000 at 09:30:54AM -0400, Benjamin L. Exactly.
