What should I expect > in Chicago tonight? I caught them back in '97 at the Metro with DJ Food and Kid Koala and it was an incredible show. I wasn't sure what to expect on this tour, but here's a writeup that was posted to the In/Flux list: I caught the Coldcut/DK show at DC's 9:30 Club and...well...Ninja Tune wins, hands down. I missed Fluid's (Sonic Soul/Baltimore) short opening set, happening in just as DK was taking to the decks to drop a mix of uptempo hip hop, funky breaks, and rare groove. He seemed to highlight the tracks more than the mix, an approach familiar to those who've heard his Solid Steel sets, but his skills and selection were certainly on point. Also earning top points was the video accompaniment: VJamm once again proves that making Boris Yeltsin dance along with a random Peace Feast release makes people smile and shake their asses. We were well primed for Coldcut once they took the stage. The boys opened with a great version of More Beats & Pieces, King Louie portion intact, and moved on through an hour and a half of Let Us Play standards spiced up with new songs and old(er) classics. Some standout moments: the George W. Bush snorting sample during a new rabble-rousing political party track, the kung fu punch/kick solo during Extreme Possibilities, People Hold On accompanied by DC graf and street images, Matt's VJammed "scratch" session (and his grin as he bowed afterwards), the encore African tribal house MONSTER, and the farewell screen thanking DC's own Chuck Brown and gogo music. Classy. > So if you want to do that, don't make > them too massive, try to keep them under > 100K using JPEG and mail them to > bongo@thebus.demon.co.uk. > (wish I got this before today!)
