Good to see Sarah and Pip again as well as meeting new Orb list members. As Sarah mentioned it almost looked like a Gothic crowd. Black was the color of the evening. But the Creatures were a no show. Didn't get the name of the opening DJ/Dance group. Alex kicked in from there and did a great set. There was plenty of Orb mixed in. This was the first time (at a Alex DJ gig) that I've seen him mix in samples from CD, which made this one of the best DJ set I've seen him do. He seemed to play for about 45 minutes then Juno came on. Alex then mixed in music and samples during the Juno set. He seemed to be having a great time with a smile from ear to ear, and jumping and dancing about. Sarah said they had tried to make that work at Vynyl a couple of nights earlier but something didn't work and it didn't go off. Alex then went off into his own set again for the next 30 to 40 minutes before they shut him down around 12:15 am. A much earlier night than I expected. Overall a good time though. I want to prompt Sarah to post since she saw the three Southern California shows and get an overall review of all three nights. Well, truthfully most of the nervous system is concerned with 'unconscious' activities. The majority of the autonomic nervous system is entirely unconscious in its operation, in that it does things like balance your heart rate and blood pressure, your perfusion of O_2 vs ventilation of CO_2, etc. But the unconscious that most people are interested in is not the same one investigated by neurologists... The unconscious 'mind' (as differentiated from the brain) is that loose association of mental structure that isn't under direct control from the perception-action feedback system. It's almost impossible to find what makes a person 'be'. There's no particular area of the brain dedicated to concious thought activity, and even when you're unconscious most of the brain is still busy working. (The old saw about humans only using some fraction of their brain is BS -- all of your brain's functions are in use all of the time, some parts more heavily than others.) Neurologically speaking there's no particular reason to separate that part of a human's nervous system that handles the conscious mind from the parts that manage other aspects of being. And there's no real easy way to do so. This problem has engaged a lot of researchers in cognition. I'm suspicious that it will never be solved. I'm still working my way through a textbook on neurology, and maybe when I finish the section on consciousness and thinking I'll have more to say. But I know already that there is no real separation between the conscious and the unconscious, it's just that some parts of our thinking and memory systems are not directly wired into our perceptual system, so we can't order them around as efficiently as we can our motor system, say. I have a personal opinion that Zen-type meditation, the form of meditation which seeks to obliterate the ceaseless chatter of thinking, is really just a way of turning off the circuits that wire our perception systems to our volition systems. Once you shut off those circuits you can actually pay attention to other parts of the human mind, but usually those circuits, where we spend most of our existence, are so noisy that they drown out everything else going on in the mind. I'm rambling though... 'james - -- James A. Crippen ,-./-. Anyway, we'd left early so we only got to the show a half hour after LX started... Nobody really is interested I know... Anyway, LX was well into the set when I came in and everybody seemed to be okay, not wildly enthusiastic but good. Somebody told me he played perpetual dawn earlier on (or at least, the guy said he played track 6 from "ultraverse" :)... Juno Reactor's set came on then and most everybody really got into it... LX's set after was cool, though I was a little surprised at how soon they kicked him off. He played a remix of Little Fluffy Clouds I hadn't heard, and there was a small cheer from the people in the crowd "in the know" when that familiar sample came on. I heard a Once More remix at the start of the first set, too, I think it was the version on Sasha and Digweed. There were a few noticeable technical errors in the set, and at one point a record ended before LX apparently thought it would and he turned and scrambled to throw on another... But I loved the set... LX is my favorite DJ, etc, etc, etc.... He ended off with a nice slightly piercing ambient-ish song, anybody know what it was? It was really fun, nice to see Sarah & Ed and the newer list members... Looking forward to seeing the Orb in full effect for the first time next year...
