Basically, the guy is GOOD, but he's only as good as his audience is GAULLIBLE (did I spell that right?) My question is this: if psychics exist, then why aren't these assholes hitting the lottery every week?!? They make generalizations until they get a reaction. For example, I could claim to know the "troubles" of people of this list, by saying, "I sense that someone is experience a tremendous amount of stress right now...someone is moving, or knows someone who has moved away...and your loss that has resulted from this move is causing you great anxiety." I would almost be willing to be a year's salary that SOMEONE on this list is undergoing some similar stress. And before you say, "Yeah, you just threw a generalization out there," I will saying the same thing about people like that guy on the Sci-Fi Channel. I watched the show for a little bit, and he was doing the SAME THING. Difference is, he does this (apparently) for a living--EVERY DAY, I would guess. He's essentially an unscrupolous magician. I hate to sound cliche, but it's the oldest trick in the book. Basically, 1.) he makes generalizations until he gets a positive reaction (and it is statistically unlikely NOT to happen), and 2.) after the reaction, he lets the person he's "reading" fill in the blanks. This is why all those 900 number "psychic hotlines" are such big business. Maybe I'll go into that trade, and make a few million.... ;-) Vince # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Dec 2000 02:03:15 +0000 From: "Agust 'Nemesis1' Arni Jonsson" Subject: RE: (orb) john edward all I can say about this thread is... don't knock stuff you don't have personal first hand experience about. and I'm not even refering to psychics on tv. being a sceptic is one thing... being a sceptic with a closed mind is another thing. nuff said. /me needs sleep /me also needs a new job ;) and money hmm ;) - --- Agust "Nemesis1" - aaj@centrum.is - ICQ: 1290264 - http://nemesis1.cjb.net free your :) [tm] # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Dec 2000 23:10:09 -0800 From: seofon@slip.net (Seofon) Subject: (orb) HIA Speedlearn 12" Can anyone out there who has Higher Intelligence Agency's "Speedlearn" 12-inch get in touch with me privately? He does not make broad generalizations. That only works when you deal with a person one on one. Example: "I sense that you are a very ambitious person". That's a statement that everyone would like to believe is true about themselves, and often do. After you bait your sucker with several generalizations you then move on to future predictions. The problem is he'd have the whole audience raising their hands, because each one would believe themselves to be an ambitious person. J. Edward on the other hand, gets so specific it's uncanny. Example: "Did you find a feather on the ground?" "Did you tell her it was a gift from her father?" The answer was yes in both cases. If nothing else, he has the ability/charisma to make people believe very specific events that never actually happened. Nah, couldn't happen. I am the guy who posted the response about my friend being on the show. I usually don't post here, but the responses to this thread are really beginning to bug me. I guess until you have an "un or other worldly" experience yourself, you can't grasp the believability of these occurrences. I have also seen a UFO fly right over my head in broad daylight, and make a 90 degree turn without even stopping. And I had a friend with me and I wasn't high. Norton" Subject: (orb) Cali shows, license plates and the new album Hello My Lovely Orb Friends! I am sorry this post is belated, but I was out of the country for a week = and unable to respond to Ed=92s prompt in my direction. Show-wise, I attended all three So-Cal shows. The first, at Vynyl in Hollywood, I felt was Alex=92s best dj set, but there was a problem with = his line-in to Ben=92s setup, so he wasn=92t able to mix along with Juno=92s = live set. The sound wasn=92t so great either, but as I said, Alex=92s set rocked. = I heard Luke Slater/All Exhale, Satellite Serenade, the Suns of Arqu remix from t= he Tribal Futures comp., Underworld, some classic Orb like AHEG=85 , Blue Ro= om, and the murky LFC other=92s have mentioned, O=92locco, Luciana, Richard J= ames =96 all great stuff!! The Galaxy show had kind of a weird crowd, and the dan= ce floor was tiny, but Alex through down another great set, and this time th= e line-in worked. He has this great KAOS pad that he uses along with vinyl and cd=92s =96 it makes for some crazy mixes. Lots of new Cyd was played including EDM and Thursday=92s Keeper. I would say Vynyl was more trance= y than Galaxy, which was more dub, reggae, killer drums and lots of Aisha/Creator/Mad Prof. As Ed mentioned, the show ended early. The third show, in my hometown of San Diego went pretty well also. No sound proble= ms, but crowd wise, this was the worst!! Don=92t people know that dayglow, b= uff attitudes and K are out? Anyway, this crowd didn=92t know when to dance,= how to dance or respond to most of Alex=92s set, though the drummers with JR = got some good response. I don=92t think I even need to say how awesome JR is live =96 that seems to be the general consensus so far on the list. The = only problem seems to sometimes be stage size =96 I=92d love to see these guys= at the Warfield in SF!!! This kinda leads me into my next statement I want to make =96 I=92ve been reading a lot of gentle criticism of LX=92s dj style/skills. The way I se= e it, Alex spins (a) what grooves him at the time and (b) somewhat what the cro= wd needs/deserves. At the San Diego show, his set after JR was all of about half an hour, then DJ =93Cameron=94 came on and promptly through down som= e cheesy remix of Desert Rose by Sting, which the crowd loved. So, no knoc= k against Sting or Alex, but SD obviously just wasn=92t prepared for what c= ame their way. I know there=92s a lot of technically great dj=92s out there,= but I=92 m more of a substance chick myself. So some records get played till the end, and some beats don=92t immediately match up =96 big deal! Where els= e are you gonna here samples about beer, a-bombs or learning a foreign language= ? And especially thrown over some great great tracks as I mentioned above. = I guess if you want technical, catch Paul Oakenfold=92s tour, but if you wa= nt substance with humor thrown down by a guy with great floppy hats, LX is y= our man. :-) Anyway, this post is almost outta control =96 I would like to briefly res= pond to Matt Skinner and Smiley=92s impressions of the new Cyd and the Once Mo= re singles. As a whole, I like the 14 track Cydonia, though I disagree with Matt =96 I prefer the earlier version of Mile Long Lump Of Lard. Smiley=92= s on the mark re: Promis, Ghostdancing and Turn it Down remaining the same, an= d stating that Egnable is a very Orb track. No filler IMO =96 it=92s freak= in hilarious. I like the changes to Terminus, but miss the older version of Once More. Oh well =96 the Cauty remix kicks butt, the rest (Bedrock and= Mark Pritchard namely) I think are your typical resident dj air plays =96 noth= ing to write home about. Let=92s remember that the Orb is going to continue to grow and change and evolve, which is what I would hope everyone on this list would want, whic= h is what I expect from myself and those around me =96 to grow. There=92s = more beats, more vocals, more lots of stuff, but it=92s still ORB. I find som= e very evocative moments on this new album, and all my expected Orb humor a= nd influences. So congrats Alex on surviving the last two years of turmoil, and putting out another timeless piece of genious! And BTW, my license plates say ORB GIRL, of course. :-0 Peace and Fluffiness, Sarah "The record skipped but the girl kept dancin'..."
