I reckon it was on a sample CD that was floating around at the time (which is why you often see the same beats and sounds being used by different artists). Sputtering flute and minimal gamelan instrumentation with an arsenal of bwanging and bwonging jaw harps. Mad. Anyone out there have the single for Alien Soap Opera's "Voladores"? The sample was originally from "Loving You" by Minnie Riperton. http://ubl.artistdirect.com/fp2.asp?layout=artist_card&artistid=34988&p_id=P+++++5278 If the story I heard about it (from this list no less) holds true, she (or the record company) sued The Orb over the user of the sample. The result was that they had the bits and pieces re-recorded by someone else so that they could re-use it without getting sued. If memory serves me right, A Huge Evergrowing came out in 1990. So I think it is entirely possible for others to have sampled The Orb (which is actually kind of an amusing thought). It only pops up in the Peel Session of "Loving U", as well as (another live version) of "Assassin", and several other tracks of the era ... Including Mimoid's "Tree of the Sun", as mentioned in the original post. I don't recall hearing it in the original ... I thought it was from some sample CD that was making the rounds of the British techno scene. (And while we're at it, those Beyond label Ambient Dub compilations rule the school. I've managed to reacquire three of the four, and can't figure out why I ever let them go! Aaah, chillin' old-school.) And, on an unrelated topic, if anyone's taken my advice and checked out Sketch, they have a new album called "Zincanode" that's only available by mail order from Norway. On the Breathe.com :"In/out" UK ad, a publicist said (about the music used for the ad) : "We tried all sorts of things, Death in Vegas, Primal Scream, the Orb, but they were too frenetic once we put breathing over the top." There are two pages about Youth as producer with two pictures (now, I know what he looks like). About the Orb's adventures beyond the ultraworld : "I was in school with Lx and then he became our roadie in Killing Joke. He was a very good drum roadie, but useless at anything else. He also went deaf in one ear because of it. Not that that makes any difference. Brian Wilson is deaf in one ear. I think it was interesting for Lx to see the whole Killing Joke experience from the side -not that it made such difference when he became the artist. He just went through his own crises. But Lx had some brilliant ideas, incredibly creative. I think it still stands up as some of the most sonically music ever made." He also talks about Killing Joke, Tom Jones, Crowded House, U2, The Fireman, Embrace and the Verve. I learned that The Orb won the Q Award in 1992 as the best producer of the year. There's a Creation records compilation out now on 2 CD, with Primal Scream : Higher than the sun (Higher than the Orb mix) Youth had just released an album called Dub Trees : Nature never did betray the heart that loved her (liquid sound design). There's a good review... "Followers of the Orb's more chilled excursions should be delighted by the world music-tinged, electro-dub music on offer here." Most Barnes & Noble's, Tower, Virgin Megastore and major newsstands carry it here in Southern California. Usually comes in at around $6.75 on the newsstand. Also note that we usually get it about a month late here in the US. I know one Tower location that has been getting it about a week after it comes out. But not every month.
