Dublab is one of those hellacious, navigate-via-javascript-icons websites, so it took a while to find Alex's set (although the searching revealed that they have a lot of other material that sounds quite interesting...). Alex's set is similar to the others he was doing at the time, although the part I listened to seemed a bit more slow and dubby than usual. Probably worth checking out. To save others time, here is how to get to Alex's set, after you are at www.dublab.com: Click on these icons, in order: Audio tank Guest DJ archives Downtempo/experimental Then find Alex's 9-1-00 set a ways down the frame. As a shortcut, this link will spawn a Real Audio browser window that plays the set, so you don't have to wade through the site. http://www.dublab.com/skins/openskin.asp?SkinName=Archives&File=dtemp/orb.rm&Title=Dr+Alex+Patterson+Mix As an even shorter cut, this link seems to be the actual address of the set, which can be used in the Real Audio player, rather than as a browser plug-in: http://platform.smash.tv/ramgen/dublab/dtemp/orb.rm Dublab seems to have the usual protections to obfuscate their RA server, and I played around with Streambox VCR, but wasn't able to capture the set...anyone else want to take a crack at it? For me the NME paled into insignificance compared to Sounds and Melody Maker - unfortunately Sounds and Melody Maker died leaving the NME on it's own. Only the good die young? I always found the NME appealed to the lower end music lover, the 13 year-old who'd just discovered "Music and angst" as opposed to "chart-pap, bells and whistles and the Bob-the-Builders of their day". More sensationalist and rumourist, the NME was always looking for the next big-thing compared to it's rivals and then giving them a slagging when they sold a few records. It's album reviews always had a rating - which meant you didn't have to read them (a good thing?) whereas Melody Maker was far more constructive - - even when criticising - and you had to read the album review in FULL to find out if the music was appreciated. In short - NME hate Cydonia - No surprise. Nobody lose sleep. Paul. __________________________________________________ Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Sorry, got to take issue with this....not that I read NME anymore, but I did do for a few years. I always found the NME to be pretty good, far preferable to the horrible Sounds, and better presented than Melody Maker (from which the ink always ended up all over my fingers). And more importantly I don't think it caters the lower end of musical tastes, it certainly didn't when I read it (85-95ish). If you want that then read Smash Hits (or 'Look-in'...remember that?). I always found an abundance of very good articles about my heros of the time.....orb, KLF, new order, that sort of thing. OK, so the NME don't like Cydonia, that's just editorial. Reviews are reviews, just ignore them I say. It's what you think that counts... Incidentally, if anyone wants to read a very very good book about Rock n Roll hellraisers (sid vicious, iggy pop, brian wilson etc), then look no furher than Nick Kent's 'The Dark Stuff'. It's a map of the Gold and Ivory Coasts of Africa. The map appears to be from some time during the middle or late slaving period I'm guessing because of all the notes on tribal populations. Most navigational maps wouldn't include this sort of information unless there was a reason for it. Although most of the map is written in Latin I think it might be either Portuguese or Spanish, most likely Spanish, because of the way the coastal names are spelled. The island in the lower right corner next to the compass point convergence is São Tome (Saint Thomas) of São Tome and Principe in this modern era. The Latin phrase at the top of the picture is "LIBYA, where is the so-called SARRA" (presumably a reference to the Saharan Desert). The map on the front cover is English, and is a navigational map of the region around the mouth of the Hudson river, at the time when much of this land was owned by France. We just found some bugs in the software that needed repair before we released all of your mirroring tools on the boxen. =) Meanwhile, (I think) I have successfully mirrored the OAA. It took a few days, but the content appears to be there. So if you've been hankering for Cydonia 1.0, a faster location should be made available real soon now. Sorry for the delays. Hopefully we should be running by Tuesday. I'll post when its available. - -Steve - -- ______________________________________________________________________________ Steve Shah (sshah@planetoid.org) | SysAdmin/Coder/Gabbernaut/DJ/Writer/Minister http://www.planetoid.org | We're not dropping out, we're infiltrating. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Life is best measured in beats per minute.
