Anyone can report CD-R auctions, and they *will* be ended. eBay also uses automatic scripts to find such auctions for review by an employee. A lot of CD-R auctions get ended; it is an unfortunate risk of actually being honest about what you are selling. :/ To get around it, some sellers use terms like "CD acetate", "internal promo", or other such leading phrases. I've also seen sellers make no mention in the ad of the nature of the item, and then tell you after the auction is over, and give you the choice to complete the auction or not, with no ill will if you don't. What really pisses me off is people who sell CD-Rs, and don't tell you; you find out when it arrives. Of course, if a refund isn't forthcoming, there are lots of ways to make their lives interesting, even without doing anything illegal or immoral... ;) (For the record, while I have been known to report CD-R auctions to eBay, I don't report "official" CD-Rs, especially for the Orb!) ;) Chris np: The Beautiful South - Miaow # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Feb 2001 13:05:08 -0500 (EST) From: laerm Subject: RE: (orb) [Fwd: eBay Auction 1407033451 Cancelled - Results Null and Void] On Mon, 5 Feb 2001, Don Gagen wrote: > I realize that. It's nothing like Beta testing. In any case I bet you have windows whistler or whatever Microsoft's latest Beta is still installed on your PC.... now if it was a CDR copy and someone was trying to pass it off as a promo then that's understandable because the buyer is getting ripped off. I can understand how record companies COULD get pissed off due to lost sales, but really - how many copies were made? 20? 30? 200 tops. They weren't made to be sold on, but if someone decides to then big deal. Hardly thousands of pounds lost due to lost revenue....... Realistically Island are going to generate MORE sales because of people selling CDR's. that's one of the main reasons for CDR's and Promos doing the rounds. It gets everyone talking about it. Just out of Interest - has anyone heard any of Cydonia/Once More played on the radio? I would guess that the radio companies are top of the promo lists. I know John Peel is a big fan and has been from the beginning, but I'll be honest - I never listen to the radio......... I've been stiffed with a CDR once - but it was a copy. All these Cydonia CDR's on Ebay are proper releases [in so far as promos are "proper" releases] NOT copies. Now if you bid for it and get a CDR copy, then you've got a right to be pissed off. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Feb 2001 10:15:28 -0800 From: Chris Johnson Subject: Re: (orb) [Fwd: eBay Auction 1407033451 Cancelled - Results Null and Void] laerm wrote: > > well, then you've got a problem with the label and record stores. if i > remember correctly, _orblivion_ only got _obscure trax_ attached to it a > few months after its release. and then if you went and tried to buy > another copy of_orblivion_ to get the other disc and then didn't get one, > then that's the record store's fault. Orbscure Trax was released shortly (like a couple of weeks) after the US release of Orblivion. It was limited (the number 1000 has been bandied about, though I think that is perhaps low), and was supposed to only be available with purchase of Orblivion. Most of the copies went to a few select record stores (I got mine at the West Hollywood Virgin Megastore, which had at least 100 copies), although some went into the regular distribution channel with copies of Orblivion, and I'm sure a bunch of them went to various media outlets. Unfortunately, a lot of smaller record stores (that only got one or two copies) unbundled Orbscure Trax from Orblivion and sold it separately. :( Chris # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 05 Feb 2001 19:13:17 +0100 From: marcolphus Subject: (orb) Orb vs Ozric Tentacles Wouldn't it be nice if Orb will remix Ozric Tentacles??? I was a little miffed, because I was a loyal orb fan that went to the nearest (didn't matter what store or price) and get Orblivion the day it was a released. But still being a loyal orb fan, I would buy orblivion again to get the orbscure trax CD, and give my current copy to a friend (an orb is not just for xmas, it's for life). when I went to the store with the flyer the clerk to it in her hand, and read it, then said to one of the other clerks or managers "we got another one of these..." then turned back to me and said, we have know idea what this is about, I don't know anything about this promo..." Did the Tower kiddies, plunder the disc for their own collections? was this a hoax by some mad flyer maker? or was Tower pulling my leg again? and unfortunately, I had to scrounge through the used bins until I found a copy and plunked down $10 for a pretty used disc. slightly miffed.. Well, it looks like inconsistency was the only constant. There were numerous reports of stores only getting a few copies, and as I said the Virgin Megastore in West Hollywood had over 100 (that I saw)...and they ran an ad in the local alternative weekly for the "buy Orblivion and get Orbscure Trax free" offer. Anyway, given the numbers we've seen tossed about, I'd be surprised if there were only 1000 copies made; 2500 is seeming more reasonable. Of course, odd people making sounds no-one heard before is ideally what it's all about. Where the Orb have recently come unstuck, is in simply being odd people (or person, since this is now basically Alex Paterson's gig) making sounds no-one has quite heard since 1993. More than 3 years on from their last album, Orblivion, Cydonia's familiar lolloping skank with burbles and tinkles seems ever more anachronistic. The new profusion of female vocals is even more regressive with single Once More, featuring chilly Japanese singer Aki, even suggesting the cheesy futurism of an '80s car advert. Strangely, given that 1998's UFOFF greatest hits collection revealed what a good pop band they were, the new song-based approach doesn't throw up many memorable hooks. Worse, the lyrics see their old daffy humour replaced with drippy pretentiousness. Moments of excellence - the fuzzy, menacing cruise of EDM and calamitous stomp of A mile lump of lard - dont dispel the sensation that the psychic voyager remains stuck in the backwaters. 2/5 JCFromParis - -- # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Feb 2001 22:48:17 -0800 (PST) From: Gavin Miller Subject: Re: (orb) Was eBay Auction 1407033451 Cancelled - Now OrbscureSkams > There were > numerous reports of stores only getting a few > copies, and as I said the > Virgin Megastore in West Hollywood had over 100 > (that I saw)...and they > ran an ad in the local alternative weekly for the > "buy Orblivion and get > Orbscure Trax free" offer. Does this guy live for loud screeching fingernails-on-blackboards and cat-versus-band-saw sounds? Barf! > regressive with single Once More, featuring chilly Japanese singer > Aki, even suggesting the cheesy futurism of an '80s car advert. And anything's wrong with cheesy futurism? I've always found it somewhat endearing, frankly. Like the optimistic hopefulness of a seven-year-old as they explain what they'll do to achieve their goal of becoming an astronaut. This man has forgotten what it's like to have fun. Typical of most critics, I think. > Strangely, given that 1998's UFOFF greatest hits collection revealed > what a good pop band they were, the new song-based approach doesn't ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Bleah. Quite frankly I didn't like a number of the tracks on U.F.Off, particularly because they sounded too much like something approaching loud, raucous, tasteless pop music. > throw up many memorable hooks. Worse, the lyrics see their old daffy ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Huh? Since when has ambient music needed fscking 'memorable hooks'? It's not like LX and crew are trying hard to appeal to a mass market, here. If they were they'd be on stage in skimpy clothes and makeup gyrating to beats stolen from 70s disco, and singing lyrics about how they want to plug girls and do drugs. That'd be appealing to the mass market. Boy bands, that's what the masses want. Faggy boy bands and lone girls with tinny voices singing about how they like to frustrate young boys. My brain is hurting from thinking of LX wearing metallic clothes and gyrating on stage with Britney Spears. :P > humour replaced with drippy pretentiousness. Moments of excellence - The lyrics on previous albums weren't. Weren't lyrics, that is. This is the first time any of LX's tunes have featured lyrics. A comparison to any previous lyrics is ridiculous. He's comparing the lyrics in Cydonia to things that he imagines in his head, not actual reality. I'm all for living in one's head, but not for inflicting it upon other people and calling it fact. I believe that's called delusion. > the fuzzy, menacing cruise of EDM and calamitous stomp of A mile lump ^^^^^^^^^^ Ooohh, I'm smarter than you because I can take a latin derivation and give it an atypical suffix to make an adjective from it that will lose all the lesser educated people and prove that I'm obviously superior and my opinion matters much more than Harvey the Drunken Asshole that pukes on your shoes while you wait for the bus. > of lard - dont dispel the sensation that the psychic voyager remains ^^^^^^^ This man has lard in his head. This guy got a degree in English and a job as a critic because his resume was unreadable from all the high-flown latinate vocabulary. Just what people want from a critic. Just what I've come to expect -- lame abusive noise unless it's their favorite band or whichever one they've been paid to crow about. Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. Those who can't teach, critique. Those who can't even critique become managers. Critics are a lower life form than even politicians and entertainment executives. Actually I rather enjoy people posting critiques here because it gives me a chance to vent my pent-up frustration with the stupidity of the general public. Yes, yes, yes, but they had originality on their side. Others are just repeating the same thing, to no new advantage. I don't mind LoA at all, but I do mind five hundred other groups producing the exact same thing, but under different names. *That's* annoying, and I've heard plenty of it, thank you. Personally, I thought Well, no, not everyone should share my opinion. If everyone did I'd be worried... :) > MLLOL was the best track on the album. Some of us like the thumping beats, > without being "beats stolen from 70s disco, and singing lyrics about how > they want to plug girls and do drugs" Indeed. Not objecting to good beats. I'm objecting to the other garbage. I certainly wasn't dissenting with LX, but with the critic. I was calling into question his personal frame of reference and his right to impose that upon other people, primarily by doing the exact same thing to him. > The Orb is(has been) a perfect blend of beats and ambience. If you're > irritated by one or the other, then you can't_fully_appreciate the music. You took that bit too seriously. The fact that the critic thought it was one of the best tracks on the album was what I was dissenting, not the fact that it was a bad song. I'm not enamored of AMLLOL but I certainly don't dislike it. It is rather hard to concentrate with that track in the background, but if I pay attention to the track I can certainly appreciate it. > hey, I was born here ---------------------->Anchorage, Alaska, > I guess you're not all that bad ;) You missed an interesting winter... It's been warmer here than in many other parts of America. There wasn't much snow on the ground until a couple weeks ago. Odd. To disabuse anyone of notions they may be forming of me with regard to my criticism... What I was doing was criticising the critic for not being openminded by being entirely closeminded about his opinions and erroneously comparing his opinions to my own. I hate critics because they seem to think that the world deserves their opinion, and that their opinion is much more important than everyone else's. I also like to let off some steam now and then... :) Opinions are like assholes -- everyone's got one, but they're not always meant to be shared. And especially not forced on other people. :) (bletch -- that's a nasty thought -- anal assault! :D) 'james - -- James A. Crippen ,-./-.
