What is it for? there have been a few UK 'standards' in recent years. before the standards, there was serious abuse by the record companies - one famous example was an Iron Maiden single that came in FOURTEEN different formats. the first rule was that only four different formats were allowed, and anything OVER 40 minutes was classed as an album. hence, 'blue room' at 39:58 counted as a SINGLE. after this, things were changed to: - - only THREE formats count - - no more than FOUR tracks per single OR - - as many remixes of the same track on one single this was changed again a year or so ago to: - - no more than three tracks per single AND - - no more than twenty minutes of music per single (this is why some remixes end up as edited versions on commercial release - so that the 20-minute rule is not broken) the record companies always make out that it's for the bands benefit, so that they don't have to churn out more tracks to fill every single... ...it's actually so that the record companies don't have to find / pay for more tracks to pad out singles by manufactured teen bands, and those of us that used to enjoy 4-track EPs / remix EPs get screwed over. surprise, surprise. now and again, some bands (e.g. propellerheads) release singles that break the 'rules' and won't count for the chart, but that's mainly for the publicity. it hasn't happened for a long time, and everyone does as they're told now. and they wonder why napster is so popular... jeez. - --- Smiley ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I can SO relate to this. The amount of times my PC has locked up or I've ***Ked up the recording times or something stupid (or my girlfriend has turned it off!). Alex has said he doesn't mind OOP material being made available, even if his record company(s) probably do(es)...but these are barely even out yet. There is world of difference between sharing a radio or real-audio broadcast immediately after it airs, and making commercial releases available even before the release. 3) I rather think *all* of the Once More material should be deleted from the FTPs, at least until they've been OOP for a while. If you don't respect the record companies (lord knows I don't), at least repect the artist's wishes. :/ Chris np: v/a - Berlin Unwrapped # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. >> # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Feb 2001 15:15:37 EST From: Ovation15@aol.com Subject: Re: (orb) ORBULLETIN: Once More release with the repect the artists wishes part, just relized that was pretty unclear gemini In a message dated Tue, 13 Feb 2001 3:14:26 PM Eastern Standard Time, Ovation15@aol.com writes: << i couldnt agree more gemini In a message dated Tue, 13 Feb 2001 2:59:40 PM Eastern Standard Time, Chris Johnson writes: << "James A. Does anyone have any experience converting these realaudio (*.rm) files to mp3? If so, I'd be happy to know... You can try Ra2wav, although it won't work if you have version 8 of RealPlayer installed; they apparently changed the codec to disable Ra2wav. Otherwise, since the RA people are complete corporate pricks about conversion utilities, you will have to resort to another decode/recode work-around with something like Total Recorder. Email me if you want to try a copy of Ra2wav. This doesn't seem to be a release where I am. Ifit is then tell me so and I'll wait. AFAIK these were only sent to people on a certain postal mailing list, not to all the record shops on Earth. If they are available at my local record store, why then I'd be glad to purchase them. But if they're promo material that I'll never see then I'd be annoyed to have to spend months hunting on ebay or begging from some radio station or paying postage to some kind soul in England to forward the delicacy. > 3) I rather think *all* of the Once More material should be deleted from > the FTPs, at least until they've been OOP for a while. If you don't > respect the record companies (lord knows I don't), at least repect the > artist's wishes. :/ I think there's nothing wrong with making available that material which *isn't* available to the general public. Things like short release promos, uncommon remixes, etc should be made available on the public FTP servers because many people will never have a chance to hear them otherwise. However, for things such as released albums (like the Cydonia album which will be released shortly) that are generally available around the world then there's no reason to archive those on the FTP servers because that's a disservice to the artists. Disseminating rare material is always good. If a record company has decided to release five hundred copies of some rare remix to a bunch of radio stations and promoters, then there's nothing wrong in redistributing this material because the average person would never be able to listen to such a thing anyway. If the record company put such things out for sale then they shouldn't be archived because they'd be purchaseable. I'm only asking for things that I *CAN'T* purchase. Not for things that I can actually get. Things like promo material counts here. So do singles released only in the UK but not in America. I'd have to be British to get them, or know someone there. I don't, and the record company gets screwed not because I'm cheating them but because they lacked the foresight to attempt a more general distribution policy. Deleting something like Cydonia v1.0 (which you imply by your mention of *all* "Once More" material) would be damaging to the community. This was never released. Perhaps it should never have been. But the dedicated fans (people dedicated enough to hunt for this mailing list, subscribe, discuss, pay attention, and finally be rewarded with unique opportunities for further enjoyment -- we're not just Napster or Gnutella wankers in college dorms here!) shouldn't be punished for sharing rare or unavailable material simply because it was never distributed widely through the normal channels. Like I said, if this sort of thing *will* be available at my local record shop (and I doubt this highly because of *where* I am -- Alaska is not exactly a major music distribution target) I'd be glad to pay for it. And I'd pay for it if I saw it on a trip somewhere else, even if I already had the MP3 copy. Most people on this list would do the same, I think. Hmmph. 'james - -- James A. Crippen ,-./-. They don't have to be available at *your* local record store to be available. Try actually looking for them, both live and online before deciding they simply aren't going to be released. In point of fact, I've managed to acquire the promo CD and one of the 12"s quite cheaply, without even breaking a cyber-sweat. I'll get the rest soon enough, probably this weekend. And you miss the point: Alex has said that he prefers that fans not distribute currently available material. Either you respect him enough as an artist to accede to his wishes or you don't. The OAA is supposed to respect Alex's wishes; the rest of us should at least consider it. In addition, most, if not all of these mixes are on the commercial releases of Once More, which you will be able to get, even if you do have to spend some time and money doing so. > I think there's nothing wrong with making available that material which > *isn't* available to the general public. Indeed. See above, where I explain that they are available. > Disseminating rare material is always good. I order stuff from the UK all the time, and any decent record store can do the same. You just have to ask. Or do it yourself. > Deleting something like Cydonia v1.0 (which you imply by your mention of > *all* "Once More" material) would be damaging to the community. This was > never released. I didn't mention Cydonia v1.0 (deliberately so), although if I were running one of the FTPs, I'd make it unavailable for a while, just on principle. Works-in-process like Cydonnia v1-3 are valuable (?) historical documents, like live shows, demos, etc, and I don't have a problem with their eventual release, particularly to a dedicated fan base. > Like I said, if this sort of thing *will* be available at my local record > shop (and I doubt this highly because of *where* I am -- Alaska is not > exactly a major music distribution target) I'd be glad to pay for it. > And I'd pay for it if I saw it on a trip somewhere else, even if I already > had the MP3 copy. Most people on this list would do the same, I think. Try ordering online. They do wonderful things with mail order these days. Distance/remoteness stopped being an excuse for piracy the instant you got online.
