Part of it *is* in stereo, but why should it matter if it's in stereo or mono? If the music's great you shouldn't have to have a stereo spectrum to keep your attention. Why so anti-mono? Mono's great. Are you mad because you can't use your 5 channel decoder on that album? What amazes me (especially since I'm a recording engineer for a living) is that people think it's "fucked up" because it's in mono. Almost every piece of equipment I've worked with for the past 15 years is stereo-ready. About the only way that I can think of that you can fuck up something and make it mono is either forget in your digital editing system to pan left and right or use a one-channel cable where you should use a two channel cable. Now, if it was digitally edited together rather than mixed by turntable, one possible scenario is that when mastering the stuff the last few things were panned properly because they discovered the mistake almost all the way through mastering. If it was mixed by turntable, the *records* would have to be mono for the ratio of them that are stereo (check Laszlo's discog), so Alex *intended* it that way if it was mixed by turntable. If it was mixed by CD-turns, some of the transfers could have been screwed up like they may have been going into Protools. The ratio of songs that are stereo suggests to me that during mastering they discovered the mistake and only the last few things to go into Protools or whatever they used ended up being stereo and they left it that way for whatever reason (impending deadline, not a major release, etc.). It might be a mistake that it is mono/stereo, but it could have been fixed in a couple of hours if they wanted to, and the ratio is wrong. If it were just a buggered cable half the songs would be stereo and half of them would be mono or the whole disc would be mono. So here's a suggestion: if you don't like it the way it is, why not make one yourself rather than bitch about it? All you really need to recreate it is a wav-editor and copies of the songs, and a couple of days if you know the program. I'm sure if you searched around and got mp3's in stereo of all the songs, you could construct your own stereo version that will make you happy. And if there were a stereo version to suddenly show up, I'd be happy to buy it. To me it would be just as good as having a brand new Orb album. >Date: Thu, 22 Feb 2001 10:34:10 -0500 >From: Charles Duchesne >Subject: (orb) Auntie Aubrey in STEREO > >Something was mentioned about the re-release of the remix project CD Auntie >Aubrey, this time done right, in STEREO. In the most basic sense a DJ plays records [or CD's or whatever medium music is pressed onto nowadays]. There's lots of snobbery involved when it comes to talking about what a DJ is. To me there are two types:- a. Dave DoubleDecks that plays records [I'm not going to go down the "chart" route] and talks over the gaps in-between the records and doesn't really know what beat mixing is. See also every DJ that you've seen/heard @ weddings etc etc. See also most Radio "DJ's". b. DJ's that take it seriously and only play a certain type or genre [doesn't mean they only listen to one type of music] and beat mix i.e. unless you knew the records really well you shouldn't be able to tell until it's happened that a new track has come on. You can analyse "type b" ad nauseam but I'm talking in very general broad terms here. Also I think Alex's DJing is more interesting because he also mixes in samples from a digital source in addition to playing records which give his mixes more depth. But I have to agree with Matt that the term DJ is quite broad and can have different meanings depending on context. Throwing my two cents into the mono debate, isn't Alex's mix on Textures also in mono? I think this would point toward Alex's mixer as the culprit, not that there's anything wrong with mono, its just different. (how strange is this?) props to Virgin, though, as they were playing the album instore when i arrived. so i sucked it up and bought the domestic, which I figure i'll return/sell once my UK one arrives. coincidentally, when i went to my favourite online store to order a proper copy of Cydonia, there was a banner ad with a quote from JC on the page! =) ===>for all you euro's - what is the track length on EDM? # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 13:52:03 -0600 From: "RMStringer" Subject: (orb) FW: Djing Almost sounds like Cold Cuts style of mixing with the digital samples thrown in over records. RMStringer I liked Matt's breakdown of the two different types of DJs, but I would add a third category of the hip-hop DJ or turntablist who doesn't necessarily beatmatch (he or she may but in this case its somewhat inconsequential), but creates new compositions through scratching, switching records rapidly (sometimes called "drop beat mixing") and creating loops by playing the same small segment of a record over and over. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 19:51:00 -0000 From: Matt.Skinner@skanska.co.uk Subject: RE: (orb) domestic bastards Spooky - just listening to it now @ work. 4:11. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 15:16:00 -0500 From: "Meredith, Justin" Subject: RE: (orb) domestic bastards [===>for all you euro's - what is the track length on EDM? is it worth trying to get the 14 track version? # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Feb 2001 12:19:46 -0800 From: "-> rachel" Subject: (orb) fully consumed ok, so I've just had a chance to begin to digest the ever-joyous Cydonia! i'm thoroughly jazzed by the "new" tracks (the ones which weren't on version 1) - Thursday's Keeper has that lovely ragga, beachy, warm sunshine feeling I get from Perpetual Dawn, while Plum Island is whistful and dreamy. frankly, i could live without Ghost Dancing, but there's always 1, right? I'm not a big fan of those "neat little boxes." They used one on the Textures mix thing, too, and once the glue goes they're a real pain. The double-disc cardboard/plastic "DigiPak" packaging used on the Asylum 2CD set hasn't held up well over time, either, so I'll take the two slimline jewel cases they've used for "Once More" and be happy, personally... > what was it exactly those boxes were referred to as?
