Sun Electric is in stereo because the spectrums are different if you save it as a wav/aiff file and look at the differences. You can also transfer it to tape and watch your left and right VU's behave slightly differently. *Slightly*. It sounds mono on first listening, and if you switch it to a mono signal halfway in between the sound barely changes. Sounds like a two channel mix not quite centered and you can have it so close that you can see it but not hear it immediately. Here's the graph: L1 111111111 555555555 R2 111111111 555555555 C3 22222222 4444444444 666666 88888888 C4 22222222 4444444444 666666 88888888 C5 333333333 777777 9999999 C6 333333333 777777 9999999 1&2, 3&4, and 5&6 are your pairs. L=left, R=right, C=center. You can't get a ratio of mono songs to stereo songs like that using two turntables (or inputs). It has to be three, unless you intentionally put three turns on a two deck mixer and the two on the same channel are going in Y'd with mono conversion. Or the turntables were sent to a general use mixing board (like a Mackie) and two of the inputs were not panned (because you have to remember to pan them). This could be either intentional or forgotten. Or it was not DJ'd in the conventional sense but it was edited in protools (like Keoki's disc that has the Alpha Team track on it). This may make a lot of sense if Alex just had the DATs at his disposal. This would make forgetting stereo pairs a lot more likely because you have two places you have to have set for stereo .... the faders on the board, and the tracks in protools. I've made this mistake and wondered why it wasn't in stereo for about two seconds. Or Alex with his prankish sense of humour said, screw it, we'll have most of it not panned and just a couple of stereo tracks dropped in here and there. This is *really* believable to me. In a studio environment, your tape op would have to make the adjustment on the equipment. Anyone used to using protools would pan hard L/R automatically upon importing a stereo pair. If you import a stereo sound file, protools does it for you, and you'd have to decide to unpan those tracks unless you forgot on the board. With the likelihood of it being mastered with these files in mono in this ration, I figure it *had* to have been intentional. Having listened to V1 for 5 months now I was a little concerned about certain tracks, but I'm very happy with this "final" release. Is it just me or does the final version of MLLOL beat the tar out of the earlier version? I find the vocal tracks pretty enjoyable. I guess what would have been ~really~ cool is if Cydonia had been released as a two disc CD. Well, when WOULDN'T we want a two discs release from the Orb? =) But what I'm getting at is, one disc being the instrumental Orb we know and love, and the other with vocal tracks, etc. Then you could play 'em according to your mood. Well, anyway, enough rambling. Cydonia is a fantastic release as it is and I'm a happy Orb fan. Any early favorites? I think it is one of the most beautiful Orb releases ever. By beautiful I mean mature...I also mean comforting. I have been through a LOT with Orb by my side, getting me through. I don't quite know how to put this second part into words. I want to say familiar..but not in a bad way. Once More STILL gives me chills. As to the vocal tracks. I really like Plum Island and of course Once More and especially Ghost Dancing. But as I want to focus on what is "new" (as opposed to what we have heard on V1), I am still not sure about Centuries. I totally did not like it when I first heard it. But, after listening to the whole CD, I went back to Centuries and it made a little more sense. It is not because it is a vocal track that I don't quite like it, nor is it for the dischord. I am a big fan of jazz, so dischord is never an issue. It is almost like, well...they are trying too hard on that track. But again, I liked it more the second time I heard it. From what I can remember of the snippets we heard centuries ago (no pun intended), I would have much rather have heard Jam on Yer Honey or Bicycles and Tricycles instead of Centuries. One other thing I noticed is there is not quite as much humor in this one. Of course, the bit about beer is funny and the bit about the Pope at the beginning of Terminus is pretty damn hilarious; but nothing like "electro shock therapy." Keep in mind, I am DEAD TIRED from work, so I know I missed something. Best cut on this listen. Hamlet of Kings...I also really liked Thursday's Keeper. It is SOOO much better than Yungle as far as "DnB" goes. I was also suprised to see so many of Andy's cuts on this one. I was a little worried when Andy left. It is nice to see things were worked out to a certain extent, so that the mission of the Orb came before inner turmoil. Oh and I wasn't Orbed...but then again, that never happens when you are looking for it, right? Can't add much more except...favorite cut from V1 era....Ghost Dancing. Favorite from final version...Hamlet of Kings. Terminus is the shiznit. Of course, I am going to have to buy the UK version to hear EDM. So all in all... a massive thumbs up. It will take me a while to get used to Centuries. But I am totally down with the rest of it... totally. 'bette np: the sheep in my head begging me to go to sleep already. "Martin K. There's a fair amount of snobbery in your "definitions," too. > See also most Radio "DJ's". Why the quotes here? > b. DJ's that take it seriously and only > play a certain type or genre To me, these are some of the dullest DJs around, those that focus on a single genre or style. "Know[ing] what beat mixing is" and being able to do so does not earn any DJ any cred in my book; it's not like it's some big secret, especially in this day and age. There are many "trance" DJs in my city, both on the radio and in the clubs, who seem to think it's some kind of art form to make it sound like they're playing the same song for three hours straight. What a bore. Personally, I'd much rather listen to a good "Dave DoubleDecks" than these genre-specific snoozers. David Holmes and Andrea Parker come to mind as two successful, touring DJs who don't mix, but who play a really eclectic set of great tracks. I'd much rather listen to their sets, beat mixing aside, than any of your Oakenfolds or Sashas or Van Dyks or whatever the flavor of the month is among the genre-impaired beatmixers. I had to respond to this because I'm really bothered by the attitude that says a beat mixer is "automatically" a better "DJ" than one who doesn't. That kind of reasoning is really silly and arbitrary and doesn't wash with me. To me, The DJ Is The Selector first and foremost, and beat mixing is just icing on the cake. I'm not *against* beat mixing by any stretch; it's simply not the be-all, end-all DJ "skill." I'd say that yes, DJing is a skill and not an art. However, it takes a very skilled person to reach the heights that some DJ's can attain. In some cases it borders on art, but mostly not. But these days, DJ's produce more and more and producers DJ more and more, so I expect in the future the terminology will be interchangeable, when it comes to dance. - --Ralph # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 19:04:18 -0000 From: Matt.Skinner@skanska.co.uk Subject: RE: (orb) DJ "definitions" being able to mix certainly helps. What pisses me off is the likes of the chemical brothers [formally Dust brothers UK] being touted as DJ's and then them clearly demonstrating that they can't beat mix. I've heard them and it was embarrassing. There are a thousand other wannabe DJ's that could do a better job. Don't get me wrong, beat mixing isn't the b all and end all, but if you're playing music to a crowd then you don't want huge fuckin double beats all over the place. I KNOW that some people play stuff that's quite an eclectic mix and more often than not, it doesn't lend itself to being beat mixed or even deftly faded in/out. If beat mixing isn't a big secret then why the hell can't people do it? surely if you're going to call yourself a DJ and try and get business then you need to master beat mixing? I used the term radio "DJ's" because again [I'm generalising] they don't mix and on the whole, they just play records. I can't remember listening to ANYone on ANY radio station and thinking "that's a good hours worth of music they just played". Radio on the whole is based around playing music that is play listed, which by definition isn't judged on it's merit, more how good a job the plugger has done or what the record company slipped the station to put it on. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 13:12:08 -0600 From: John Goelzer Subject: RE: (orb) DJ "definitions" > I used the term radio "DJ's" because again [I'm generalising] > they don't mix and on the whole, they just play records. > Radio on the whole is based around playing music that is > play listed, which by definition isn't judged on it's merit As mentioned in my follow-up post, I'm a radio "DJ" who doesn't mix. I do, however, choose *all* my own records and don't play commercials. > I can't remember listening to ANYone on ANY radio station > and thinking "that's a good hours worth of music they just > played". This past Monday night, I played the Patterns & Textures album in its entirety. I know it's not quite an hour, but maybe that counts...? ;) Not that I consider it the only "good hours worth of music" I've ever spun on the air... There are bad and good DJ's that fall into both categories. I've experienced plenty of both. I've been to a shed full of weddings/family gatherings etc etc where some "DJ" turns up then proceeds to play 5 hours of garbage. Yes, I know that one man's garbage is another man's heaven. Don't get me wrong, I've got nothing against mobile DJ's or radio DJ's but it pisses me off when they get lumped in with other DJ's. Again I've heard plenty of shit "normal" DJ's - and by that I mean poor choice of tunes/play by the numbers/bad beat mixing/and or lack of innovation. I agree, I'd much rather hear 5 hours of good records with a few bad ones thrown in and not hear any beat mixing, then 5 hours of bland tunes mixed in together with no imagination or thought to selection of music. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 19:40:28 -0000 From: Matt.Skinner@skanska.co.uk Subject: RE: (orb) DJ "definitions" pt 2 Like I said several times, I'm generalising. Well done. You're in a tiny percentage and people like yourself are few and far between. Playing stuff YOU want to play on a radio station. Are you choosing from your own record selection or the Radio's? I could be pedantic and say that playing someone else's mix CD is not really DJ'ing.........Again, I'd rather hear you playing that, than some twat playing a list of records he/she has no choice or control over that a corporate suit has picked. I remember doing Pirate radio about 10 years ago and playing what the fuck I liked. I probably pissed off more people than I made happy with my selection of records, but I'd rather have a beer or smoke with the person I made happy than the sheep who wanted the same records that everyone else played at the time. And, yes I played the orb ;-) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 14:42:51 EST From: Ovation15@aol.com Subject: RE: (orb) DJ "definitions" i dont know where youre from but where i live there are DJs on the radio who mix. the volume just goes down for a sec and some guy talks and then goes back up again. usually in this case the guy who is talkin is not the guy who is spinning. but at any rate these DJs are on 7days a week for 3 hours strait. gemini In a message dated Wed, 28 Feb 2001 2:07:25 PM Eastern Standard Time, Matt.Skinner@skanska.co.uk writes: << being able to mix certainly helps.
