They go on sale Saturday at Noon, at least that's the "Internet Onsale" time at the ticketmaster.com web site (which, in my experience, means that tickets may or may not go on sale two hours earlier at actual outlets). Not sure about price, though, since it's not listed at TicketDisaster. I'd keep an eye on the Metro's site (http://www.metrochicago.com/). They should have the info up soon. Orb Cydonia (MCA) Orb's massive international success in the early '90s signaled the arrival of so-called "ambient techno," but those who thought its influence stopped at post-drugs-and-debauchery chill-out rooms only had half the story. Orb was more akin to a Bloody Mary, an easily digestible mix that enabled the debauchery (and different drugs) to continue even after the sun came up. Combined with its trademark light show, Orb's music became the underground's answer to Pink Floyd (cleverly referenced on the cover of its Live '93 disc), proving that under the right conditions, it is possible to listen to a light show. While the group's earlier efforts mined psychedelic music and trippy dub for much of their inspiration, incorporating soundbites and environmental noise to impressive effect, Orb subtly altered its sound throughout the past decade. Cydonia, recorded more than two years ago but trapped in major-label limbo while corporations sorted out and consolidated their various holdings, finally arrives with the band's eccentric identity intact. One of Orb's most interesting qualities is its timelessness: The music looks backward as much as forward, so each of Orb's many and varied works manages, despite the passage of clubland trends, to sound contemporary. Cydonia's dreamy soundscapes are slightly more focused than in the past, with singers Aki Omari and Nina Walsh giving "Once More" and "Ghostdancing" an accessible trip-hop feel. Since-departed engineer Andy Hughes proves a perfect foil for Orb mainstay and mastermind Alex Paterson, juggling the music's disparate elements so dexterously that it sounds far more relaxed and spare than it really is. Aggressive, guitar-laden tracks such as "A Mile Long Lump Of Lard" go down easy, though Paterson keeps the maxim of one-time colleague Brian Eno in mind by keeping the music menacing. Cydonia, like much of Orb's output, shows a dual inclination toward ambient backgrounds and melodic, Massive Attack-style foregrounds--a tendency no doubt encouraged by its additional collaborators, who range from a host of engineers to old friend Robert Fripp. However, considering how few electronic acts have translated the indulgences of studio tomfoolery into consistently great records, it's reassuring that Orb has weathered its unplanned hiatus and released another winner. --Joshua Klein _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? LONG time Orb fan. Just to share my first Orb experience: Was back in college in OH (1991) driving to a DJ gig in Columbus and was listening to the alternative station coming out of OSU. Heard (of course) Little Fluffy Clouds and was immediately hooked. Literally RAN to the local alternative record shop the next morning and found the double CD UK version of the first album. I was too psyched. Been a fan ever since. I am a HUGE live music freak and have been looking for more live Orb ever since the Live '93 came out. I'd like to get a collection together, however, I've nothing to trade (as far as The Orb goes). Would any kind soul(s) out there mind a couple b&p's for a newbie like myself? I'd be forever grateful and would hopefully return the favor in the near future. Please get in touch off list if you'd like to help out. Many thanks. So where can I go to buy the CD? The HMV in nearby Kawanishi of course! Anyway, they had the 13 track Cydonia (looked like a UK import) and Once More single on display in latest releases, as well as at a listening station, though unfortunately the player was broken. Luckily, I had a look at the regular shelves and saw they had the Japanese release too (14 track version, international label but with Japanese spine cover thing and insert, pictures of which are above) So, I picked it up for the bargain price of 2500 yen (about $24 US) Yikes! I picked up Mouse on Mars' Instrumentals too, for good measure. Anyway, the insert has lyrics only for those two songs, I guess they thought that Nina's singing was kinda unintelligible... =) Overall, I like the album though a lot of the songs feel a little too ornamented... that is, a little busy with bells and whistles. Maybe I'm just too used to the ol' Cydonia v1 that I made a few months ago. I do really like Centuries though, I'd buy a single of that though I'm not too interested in the Once More single - especially since it's a little bare. BTW, I hope The Orb makes it to Japan. And is this the same mix of EDM as is on the UK version? Anyone? Anyone? Trying, obviously, to figure out whether it's worth the effort getting the Japanese version along with the UK version... thanks... I'm trying to convert the Orb MPEGs from the ftp site onto a CD as a VCD. I'm using Adaptec Toast on an iMac, and it requires using another program called M. Pack to make the MPEGs "Toast-Ready." Unfortunately, Apple bought the rights to M. Pack and for some reason, never made it available (prolly cause it was competition with their new iDVD package) Furthermore, Adaptec never offered a fix to this problem, leaving Mac users incapable of authoring VCDs. I am wondering if there is anyone on the list with MPEG compression software that will resolve this problem for me. I know that besides M. Pack, there are three other programs that will do the "Toast-Ready" feature: Media Cleaner, MegaPeg, and Mpeg Power Pro. However, I don't want to spend the 300-500 dollars that these programs cost just to make one VCD. I have AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ, and irc. I have a little web storage space. I am willing to transfer files any way possible. I can send you the Mpegs for you to convert, or you can send me the software. I'm sorry for the Long Non-Orb related post, but I am desperate. Please reply to me off list, and thanks for any help offered. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2001 20:09:40 +0100 (CET) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Christoph=20Kluxen?= Subject: (orb) it`s a shame Aloha, heard a track today from Marc et Claude named Loving You, using the Song from Mrs.Ripperton, it``s fucking Mayday Trance, what a shame !!!! What I think about Cydonia? First of all its wonderful, it``s Ultraworld, Pomme Fritz, OT and a perfect combination between the orb and the nice vocals, I think Plum Island is really the best example for that. Nina Walsh has a beautiful voice, from which group is she coming? Hamlet of Kings and of course Terminus are my favourite songs, the play of Guy Pratt in Hamlet reminds me very much at the way Deep Dive Coorporation does it, that melodycharacter in it, perhaps that did inspire them, but perhaps they are just inspired by themselves. Egnable is the way they did at Pomme Fritz, I hope they``ll find the whole tape from the lost FFWD Session sometimes. Besides the mix of A mile long of Lard has turned down and gives the song real quality comparing to the cydonia V 1.0. EDM is the strongest track I think, mixed that with Two Lone Swordsmen - Tiny Reminders (neuflex), gave a good break, I think that track is done especially for DJ``s, why else should they just bring it out on vinyl? O.K. I don`t like Thursday``s Keeper too much and the end of Hamlet, the song has no real end, that``s a shame I think, they just turned it down. I mean the orb is perfect, and perfect music needs a perfect end. Perhaps they hadn`t enough time??? Enough of critics, I love it !!!!!!!!! Sometimes it nerves that some people in this list talk bad about other music, for example trance and Techno, the most stuff I don``t like, too, but there is a lot of interesting, freaky and flowing stuff U can find, if U take perhaps Sven Väth there is no compare to the orb, but as the orb it``s an individual way to give electronic music a soul. I respect that and do not compare that with that, cause it`s something else. If U don``t know about it, don``t talk about it!!! Some stuff to convince: Earth-Emotions (Free Form) www.freeform.de Outernational Spacelords (Ambient Diary 3,Dub Backups 3,Elektrolux) Daze Maxim " Mathematical breakfast" 12" Headroom - "Distant" (Planet rythm) X-Dream/Cybersnack e.p. Spectral-Diffuse (Blue Room) Some good labels: Qube Blue Room Pocket Spirit Zone and so on and so on.... P.S.Do anyone know a very electronic Big-Beat-Dub remix of a Bill Laswell- Track on 12"? Heard that in a DJ- Set and there is really a compare to Blue Room (the orb), it``s using a sample from Terence Mc Kenna perhaps, the DJ``s first LP they ever had was UF.Orb. Badorb is a watering place in Germany, all that places begin with Bad. Enough for now, CY, Christoph from Germany __________________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I'm from Milwaukee, and will be attending both the Detroit and Chicago shows. Not quite the massive road trip Gavin was talking about the other day (I'm jealous!), but nevertheless something I wished I'd done on the last tour. If only there were a Twin Cities date, or Cleveland or whatever, I'd see one or two more (can't quite swing the Canada shows). Two should be fun, though. Speaking of which... I'll probably reiterate this request as the actual show approaches, but if anyone in the Detroit area cares to recommend any record shops, after-bars, restaurants, etc... any pointers (especially record shops) will be appreciated as it'll be the first time in the Motor City for my co-travelers and I. Still got my fingers crossed hoping that they'll announce Sun Electric and/or DJ Lewis as additional support, but will be perfectly happy with Autolump and Prayerbox, too... Also eagerly anticipating the initial reports/reviews from listmembers about the UK shows...
