You need that in order to cue up to a beat and throw the track in a predictable manner. The cheapest DJ CD player is probably a Gemini CD-110. One of their dual players is probably more bang for the buck if you need two. There shouldn't be static...but as I recall this disc was pressed by PDO during the "bad" period, so it is probably bronzing, which shows up as ever-increasing static over the course of the disc, and over the course of years. To be sure, look at the center of the CD, and see if it says "Pressed in the UK by PDO.", and see if you can see a variable icky orangish-brown color in the silvery areas on the back (label) side of the disc. If you can, the disc is screwed. PDO might replace it, or you might try to return it where you bought it (since it is "damaged"). As a consumer, I've grown very wary of discs from certain artists from the UK in the early nineties; and have to ask very pointed questions before buying, as many people don't know about the problem, or are deliberately trying to get rid of damaged goods without disclosing the problem. Unfortunately, some of my favorite artists were pretty much exclusively pressed by PDO in the UK... :( Thankfully, there aren't too many Orb-related discs that are affected; the primary ones being the Give Peace A Dance compilations. The fact that they *are* affected is a real bitch, since they are chock-full of exclusive or extremely hard-to-find tracks. It has tracks by Vicious Circle, Journeyman, Skylab, Mixmaster Morris, Daniel Pemberton, PFM, Seeba & Lotek, Jonah Sharp, and T-Power. I have a few unopened copies of this (don't ask--no, I didn't steal them). There is an audio cd, and a cd rom as well. I'll post with the item numbers tomorrow. Later! From Ross, a friend : Hi J.C., I discovered something that might be interesting to the Orb list--would you mind forwarding it? I have been enjoying the U.S. release of 'Cydonia,' but wanted to get the missing track, so purchased the UK version via amazon.co.uk. To my surprise, the sound is quite different--much worse--on the UK version. It sounds like the two issues were mastered quite differently. By way of background, I have an 'audiophile' stereo that can reveal otherwise unnoticed differences in recordings (Mark Levinson CD and amp, Thiel speakers). I found the US release to have much better 'ambience' (important for the Orb!), deeper and tighter bass (ditto), and a smoother and more extended high-end. In comparison, the UK release sounds muffled and muddy. I wonder whether anyone on the list has heard this, and also whether Smiley can track down the mastering information, since I can't find it on the CD credits.
