You should scan at 300-600 dpi, then use the built-in algorithms of Photoshop or ImageReady to compress the files to a manageable level. I'd be happy to do that; I do it for a living. I can take a good photograph scanned at 600dpi at 1800x1800px and compress is to 6K, at 200x200px, with minimal loss of quality.
