I guess whoever sent it doesn't give a shit about hip-hop, but like it or not its the most influential (and possibly important) form of musical expression to arise since rock n' roll emerged in the fifties. If you listen to hip hop and haven't caught on to Blackalicious and Latryx (both affiliates of DJ Shadow) then you're really missing the boat, check the DJ Shadow produced "Storm Warning" on Quannum Projects as an example, probably the best hip hop song I have everheard. These guys have been turning out the most consistent, original, and just plain kick ass hip hop for over five years now. Furthermore they've put out all of their releases in DIY fashion, no radio/MTV support and almost all of their albums have been released on Shadow's own labels, first Solesides and now Quannum. At the very LEAST you have to respect someone who is doing something different, and doing it on their own terms, even if you don't necessarily get it. Maybe Shadow didn't invent smapling, but for a generation of bedroom hip hip heads, he certainly provided a model of how to get your productions to reach a larger audience. Music is almost always a positive thing, unless we make it otherwise through our judgements (the other night I even found myself defending Moby through a similar argument) Sorry if I offended anyone, but I had to vent. ikki # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Apr 2001 18:46:13 -0400 (EDT) From: "Benjamin L. Hey all, Andrew M. Kontrabecki here. Lurking and working has kept me off the list in full, but I wanted to just post a few things as they seem to appear... To all those Orbonauts in the NYC area I'm going to the Irving Plaza show and if anyone wants to chill at my place before hand, I'm in Bklyn and will be hangin out prior to the gig. I know it doesn't sound the greatest but, it's no pretense-no problems, just a good view of Downtown Manhattan/Brooklyn and a lot of space...Email me privately for directions...Also can anyone give the list a tip off as to the tracks being played at the shows so far? I know Smiley had a little list going, but nothing lately...thanks. Has anyone listened to that -Paterson, Dr. Alex - Journey Into Paradise on LSD records? Just wondering. I'm thinking of buying it, but would love a little heads up. Also I spotted a minor Orb sample on Tino's Dub Breaks Vol. 5. Not necessarily worth the price for the samples, but the rest of the album is "Toasted....Nicely Toasted". I was wondering if anyone had thought of a way to put the whole Orblist onto the Badorb mailing? Doesn't it make sense? I mean wouldn't we all like to be able to get this music? Or maybe someone could compile the pieces of vinyl as they comeout and CDR 'em? That seems a bit more criminal though...Just some random thoughts, I'm prolly missing something somehwere... And last but not least, my usual request of any of the latest hard to find tidbits, like the 40 minute mix or the Breezblock radio shows. I'm wondering if any kind soul might like some money in exchange for a mere CDR of these? I know it's bordering on criminal, but I don't do much dwnloading and in the past these requests haven't gotten shot down so... Rounding out my bi-annual post, I just picked up Badawi -Heretic of Ether [great!], SaltPeter -NANO3 [great], T. Felhmann -Onetothree [last 6 tracks excellent!] and Scorn -Greetings From Birmingham [great]. Oh, and anyone who's seen "Machiavelli Rises" or "Men of Respect", I'm in a GlassBlowing class with the Producer/Writer and have new insights into the elements should you need them. Looking forward to his next project; the Triangle Shritwaist Factory Fire... Thanks for reading. Enough of my babble, back to the showcase showdown... AMKontrabecki P.S.
