I've been an Orb fan since the beginning, but got sucked into ambient or atmospheric drum and bass thru LTJ Bukem. For those who don't know, imagine the trippiest "Hearts of Space" styled ambient synths washing over jungle breakbeats. Awesome stuff. But this song was a great opener, and one kid walked up to the decks, pumped his fists, and shouted "Thats dope, man!" when he heard the calvalry charge horns, followed by the amen breaks. It was the first Orb track that I spun that wasn't part of an ambient chill out set with people sitting/lying down and spaced out. Even saw one kid breakdancing! Just thought I'd share this with everyone. I live in Houston Texas, and if Simon is right about their love of Austin, I'll drive up there to see them, no doubt. Austin is a crazy hippie/college town that I used to live in so I see why. Any Texas Orbsters wanna hang out, drop me a line! I'm driving there to Austin's Elements Club tonight to catch Bukem himself, and I'm pretty excited! It's usually on twice on Friday nights and a couple more times over the weekend. They seem to show a more eclectic mix of vids than before, but still throw in some oldies. Micah was successfull in getting himself a ticket. An amusing story that I will recant as we were waiting in line. Micah had already asked at the box office (around 6pm, doors at 8), and they said that they would be releasing more tickets at 8pm... a while later a guy walks up to us and asks to see a ticket so he can find out if his is real or not.. he just bought it from a scalper you see... so I ran my thumbnail acrossed it, and it turned black there (heat-sensitive paper) so I told him it was most likely real. So I asked him how much he paid... "60 dollars" he says, and then he mumbled something about how he really needed to see the show... understandable I thought.. and then he looked up at the club door and saw the sign that said tickets would be available at 8pm for 25.00. his face dropped.. heh.. so the moral of the story is: a) don't pay 60 dollars for a ticket, b) at least check the venue box office first. the nyc show was pretty damn good... I think it doesn't compare to my first show on the "Happy Happy, Joy Joy" tour, but then... hehe.. for the people who saw them on the first three shows (gavin prolly already has posted this info) they have added more visuals. Witchman has his own, and autolump (sorta) have their own too now. I believe we asked Alex (maybe it was witchman) who "Prayerbox" was, and he didn't really know, he thought that it might be Simon Phillips (bass), but he wasn't sure.. hehe... the set was around an hour and 45 minutes, no encore... oh, we also saw Chad, a fellow list member.. Yes, they should have played Toxygene (wasn't me that said that though), and they did in fact play Once More (LX mixed in the Bedrock remix for some reason). But, on the whole, I found little to complain about. I tried to write down the tracklist after getting out of the club, but failed miserably... somewhere round the middle things got muddled. Once More (Bedrock Dub) Perpetual Dawn Blue Room Terminus Egnabled Towers of Dub Outlands Little Fluffy Clouds (somebody yelled "play it!" as they mixed in the high percussion track) (EDM? Recognized some stuff off of the Jack Dangers/Tino Breaks cd) This was intense. Like Orb's answer to Orbital's "Satan". Thursday's Keeper (my new favorite track on Cydonia. Nothing like hearing a sine-wave bass at ear-bleed volumes) Actually, now that I think about it, Toxygene might not have fit too well into the set. Might have disrupted the flow a bit, especially since the new material fits less with the "middle" Orb than with the "early" orb... considering that all that was played was off of Cydonia, Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld, and U.F.Orb. Anyway--Witchman as an opening act was excellent. The last thing he played was one of the best densely layered trance tracks I've heard. Was impressed with Autolump as well. I dug the fact that Witchman and Autolump are now, apparently, part of the Orb (I think Autolump hid behind Witchman's gear, running videotapes... not sure what he actually *did* though). I also drooled over the Titanium PowerBook G4 they had (Autolump shut it down right before Orb started. The apple on the case glows slightly when it's turned on, and it went dark when he shut it off). "That was fun!" Maybe with the good crowd response, Orb might lobby to get Orbital to make DC a stop over on *their* next tour... Autolump, when they played, consisted of LX and some older guy, and was pretty cool. Sort of a minimalist live house type of thing. Then witchman, which I also liked. My roomate informed me that he already had some witchman stuff from another label. Anyone know what this label might be? I actually had to leave halfway through the actual orb set due to unpleasently crowded conditions in the space (irving plaza is SMALL!), but they played my two favorite songs first; blue room & U.F.Orb which was nice. Anyone know who that basist was? Anyways, overall a very nice show. I gave LX a huge phatty before the whole thing started and in return got a copy of BadOrb's BOB3 12" :) He gave out 3 total, which were BOB1 and BOB2. BOB3 sounded a lot like Autolump, sort of a minimal house feel but sounding like it was recorded live and with some nice orb synths over it. In response to Lee Blanch... Here are my problems with Cydonia. It doesn't really hang together well as a whole. That said, there are some really phenomenal songs... actually, just about all of the songs are very good, in my opinion (it took hearing "Thursday's Keeper" live to convert me to that track). If you know the history of the record itself (having been delayed since 1999-- see www.theorb.com for details) you might realize that the delay contributed to the fragmentary quality of the album, as such delays usually do. Parts of the current version of Cydonia are nearly two years old--there are, essentially, two different Orbs on Cydonia. The "Cydonia v.1.0" album that's been floating around is (essentially?) that earlier version, and it hangs together much better (and I also really like "Yungle" and "Freely Wheely," neither of which appear on the official release). I'd have to rate Cydonia on the same level as "Pomme Fritz." There's much that is beautiful, but there're also some bits that just don't grab me. Remember, as well, that LX and company aren't necessarily out to please us (why else would they record an elephant taking a shit and call the result "sticky end"?) or the music press. Keep in mind, as well, that my response to "Orbus Terrarum" took about two months to form. From "where are the beats?" to "brilliant!" takes some deep listening. And I've never actually liked the Mk. II version of "A Huge Ever-growing..." too much. Blasphemy, I know... ;) And if I could make my own version of "Adventures Beyond" that has the beat-using mix of "Spanish Castles in Space" *and* that long version of "Star 6&789", I would. (Wait, I can! ;) On the whole, though, the Orb's direction seems to be somewhere between the early 90s material tempered with lots of noise and chunky (and I do mean chunky... check out "A Mile Long Lump of Lard" and its' "DC go-go through a an army of fuzz boxes" drum track) breaks. I find I rather like it. But if you really want your faith restored, see the live show. Pretty damn close to transcendant. "Wrong!" -- The Three Stooges # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 19:09:12 +0200 From: "Pego" Subject: (orb) [Long; Newcomer] Orb around the globe hi to all! this is Pego from Italy, a quite-long-time Orbster and a new addiction to this awesome list! i usually don't post stuff in mailing list or newsgroups, me being quite a paranoid and reserved person, but i couldn't resist: seeing all you guys agreeing on gathering before the live acts made me savour the beauty of being part of a community of such great die-hard fans! what could i say? almost nothing, i think. i've been orbing for four years now. my collection has nothing special, only still-in-print stuff... thanks to the net i managed to gather quite a lot of the rarest orb stuff, but i'd give an eye to buy some of the rarest stuff here. i don't know if you can imagine how horrible the record shops are here in Italy... the whole music scene sucks... if you talk about ambient you're considered an alien at best, and an heretic at worst. the whole electronic music fever that seems involving the whole planet, here is unheard of. there's only a market for so-called "commercial music", which finds one of its best man in Gigi d'Agostino, if you ever heard about him. it was only thanks to a little shop, manned by a single person, "Joy Records - The Weird Music Shop", that i got into Prodigy six years ago. and from here, i "conquered" almost the whole electronic music genre: next came Future Sound Of London (...miss them...), then Orb, and then one by one: Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin, Autechre, Underworld, Moby, Photek, Daft Punk, Armand Van Helden (ok, he's not strictly electronic, he's house, isn't he?), Fatboy Slim... latest additions are Boards Of Canada and KLF. i exported my musical collection, five years ago, in Slovenija, were i spend my holidays since i'm half-slovene. there i instantly got elected as the "music man". i stormed my circle of friends with the Prodigy, and year by year, i presented them some new groups and their music. and finally next year i kinda "completed my quest", as a friend of mine introduced me to the KLF. i reconsidered the whole situation, and acknowledged that Orb and KLF was the best that i could have. for now :). ok, maybe FSOL are as good, but i haven't heard from them for years... and it's harder to find FSOL stuff on the net than it is to find KLF stuff. the fact that i get so much stuff from the net doesn't mean i don't buy original cds. i could be a good example to the RIAA of how Napster does not hurt cd sales (actually i use Audiogalaxy, but it's quite the same). i have around 150 original cds, which, considering that an album here cost around L. 40.000, (about $16) is a LOT. it's a great amount of money here in Italy, and a lot of people complain about it. but i appreciated all the artists i listen to, and whenever i can, and my wallet can too, i buy their cds. i'd prefer giving directly this money in Alex's hand, but for now, it's quite difficult. this is it. not much to say for now. just want to tell you to enjoy by my side at the various lives... i think i'm envious... :) finally: it's four years i wanted to say it: thanks to Smiley, Lazlo Nibble and everyone who contributed to the great Orb discography! i wouldn't be so Orbful without it!!!! have fun, and sorry for my english, i've never used it in the "real world"!
