Let me tell it as I saw it... I'm quite saddened by the technical difficulties, since everybody has said that Thursday's Keeper was the definite highlight (and 13 minutes long, apparently!) So if anyone has a recording, I'd love to hear it! It was a pretty good Orb show, but there were too many dead, long stretches between songs. Some of those long voice samples are incomprehensible. And I'm sorry, but 15 minutes of LX djing to give the others a break didn't cut it. Just as he's building up energy (and it was really working, spinning great stuff), he shuts it down to get on with the concert. Imagine the dance mix of AHEGBRFTC... whatever... it's wicked... just as it's starting, shut down. FUCK! It would have been a great break from the "concert" if he'd had time to get into something. Not the best Orb show, no big surprises in the versions played, but quite nice nonetheless. Great sound! Really sucks about Thursday's Keeper! And Which man? Please. Chi-town report - I don't know if this happened in other cities but here in Chicago Virgin advertised an appearance by the orb and a free promotional give away with purchase of the albulm. So natuarally being the good orb fan that I am I showed up at virgin. Well there was a little bit of false advertiseing. It wasn't the ORB it was Alex and the promtional giveaway was just the once more single. But since I only have the UK release I picked up the US release and got the single. The other aspect of false advertising was the fact that it wasn't an appearence but a performance! A cozy little DJ set by alex for about thity people. it was sweet. Alex spun the tunes he has been playing on groovetech, like "A little less conversation" and the Led Zep remix. He had alot of fun and danced around quite a bit. He played some jungle that made me remember why I like jungle. But he did mess up a few mixes. after trainwrecking a couple times trying to mix a few tracks he laughed and gave up. then he just turned one off and the other on. oh well, he tried. I didn't see gavin there and I had no way to identify other list members but I hope some others got to see this. After I had him sign my albulm and chatted with him. He jokingly complained about not having enough time to shower and apoligized for missing his groovetech duties last week. I told him seeing him live would make up for it. The actual orb show was good. Different crowd than I remember, but this was the first time I saw them sober. Still an incredible show, but maybe not quite as magical. There were too many pauses between tracks. Not that I am really complaining. I did have to ask some people who worked there way up to the front to stop having a loud conversation(not about the orb too). Towers of Dub was truly devine and the rollercoaster ride of Outlands was a blast. I caught Gavin after the show and he had 9 wristbands from nine orb shows on. You have to keep in mind that when you listen to a studio album, especially by a grou like the orb, there were weeks and weeks of work put into all the details; the mixing, the effects, the panning, the levels, filters, etc etc ad nauseum. I've now seen them a half a dozen times, and although it wasn't the best Orb I've seen, it was damned fine. Our group took a leisurely time getting to the show, with stops for Korean food, Belgian beers, and British Colombian.. Arriving at the Guverner, we saw a large crowd apparently lining up to get in, but another lit entrance with some security. As we wandered by this second entrance, one of them said something I couldn't really hear, and a member of our party turned to me to say, "How civilized: They have a dedicated J-smoking area!" We, of course, were all set to take advantage of this amenity, when someone questioned a little more closely what had been said by the security, and it turned out to be "Papa Roach" (a group), not "Pop a Roach" (an invitation). Oh well, not to worry, there were sufficient opportunities inside. The venue is a large cavernous space, but acoustics were surprisingly OK. Bass was loud and penetrating without distortion, but as pointed out by others, many of the samples were illegible (I was giving my friends a running translation of all the HAL 9000 speech which was largely inaudible). The crowd seemed a healthy mix of young and more "mature" fans, but since this was not a sellout, was a bit thinner than some of my previous Orb shows. As mentioned by others, the end of the show was marred by technical difficulties, including several sustained electronic squeals (with the Orb, one can never discount the possibility that the squeals were part of the plan, but there seemed little doubt that they had some problems up there). And I would say that they never really built up the energy with the audience. There were many excellent moments, sonic spaces, etc., but then they would move on to something else. One really sustained 15-minute number would have been great, but never came. The orb show, although not the best I've seen, was brilliant. Let me first start of by saying. I haven't been to active or participating in the Orb list lately. I also thought Cydonia was a very weak release compared to it's v1.0 copy. And there were some tracks I downright Hated! That and my U.F.Orb Disc has been missing for quite some time (the unreturned lender). I guess you can say I was "losing the faith"... I've been turning my head to many more new and interesting young lads and lasses that are making stuff I'm finding much more interesting for me to listen to. Blasphemy you say? Now don't shoot me down, hog tie me, and burn me at the stake yet. The Orb will always have a special place in my heart. Now I arrived at the show, with barely any excitement. My friend Jef, a last minute spare ticket trade, was my companion. I didn't see to many people I know, and I didn't get to meet any listee's (sorry guys, no Gavin for me, and for some reason, xmission seemed to have eaten my post!) I did run into some old friends (Daryl where did you go! I wanted to talk to you seriously!)... Witchman was good, Didn't blow me away, but I'd seriously think I'll check out his records.And the those little star logo's came up.. Tried to find my friend, and get into a good position for the show. MLLoL came on, I was kinda excited, but the was it came it... Just sorta happened, no big explosion or anything, and for some reason at that moment it sounded weak. I was also in a bad spot. I had to move. I got over on the Left side, and weaseled my way down closer and left of center. Right under a fan. *** I now have to explain something to all you non Chicagoans. First of despite the day started off in the mild low 70's by evening, and the time of the event it was a chilly and windy 40 degrees. With that in mind, the Metro has NO Air Conditioning! You think a place as swank as that, and all the $$ they rake in from all those poor concert going kids, they would splurge for some AC! Joe Shanahan, quit being a greedy ass, and give the kids a break! What I'm trying to say, despite the frigid elements outside, the Metro still gets quite steamy inside, especially at an orb show. So being positioned under a fan is a choice spot *** Then came on Promise. snore... One of my least favorite tracks off the album. Didn't do much for me, except for those little teddy bear graphics on the screens, but those showed up later. Then came Turn It Down... Aww yeah.. It's starting to happen for me now. And now here it goes... One thing I found funny is that no one has happened to mention that they had a live bass player (maybe someone did, and I just skipped the post). and we haven't had a live bass player since the Happy Happy Joy Joy tour(circa 1995). That post that Rachel gave from one of her friends, reviewing the NYC show, I have to say Fuck Dat Shit! Blue Room came on, and OH my fuckin' Goodness! That Damn Bassline! I have to say the thing that hooked me into the Orb, ages ago, was U.F.Orb (damn, I'm gonna have to go out and buy my fourth copy of that thing! Anybody got a 2 disc version you wanna sell?). I mean ABTU was good, but man... Blue Room, Those atmospheric sounds, those squishy beats... But do you know what it was? It was that DAN BASSLINE, that infections ass rumbling, body numbing, booty shaking, heart breaking bassline! and I heard it there, right in front of me, in that sweaty venue. I instantly knew why I was there, why I had to make passage to this event and also again on the west coast. Blue Room Rocked. The night went on and they continued to rock me! Outlands was great to hear, Towers of tub bombed the place! Perpetual Dawn and LFC felt fresh and very welcome. Freely Wheelie must have been played, because Its a song I didn't recognize, and that is a song I have yet to hear recorded (I've tried many times to get it from the various list sources such as Moondog's FTP, but it always ends up being a failed effort, Is it commercially released yet?). Thursday's Keeper was great! I know people rip on Amen breaks all the time, but Fuck Dat. I don't know why, I just love amen breaks! But they can be used for evil if left in the wrong hands (luckily I've been saved by some great tracks that use amen breaks incredibly, such as Hrvatski's Gatham, Squarepusher's *pick-a-track*, and Lesser's Anal Retentive Last Stand)And the Orb does not abuse! That was great was to finish things off. One upsetting thing was the lack of encore that I've heard other listers mention. I don't know if this is the Metro's doing (probably) or Lx and crew, making the set short. The visuals I thought were a step backwards from the Orblivion tour and that crazy pyramid, and at times downright boring. The lack of Orbus Terrarum tracks also made me a little sad (No Valley, No plateau, No slug dub?). But regardless, the orb has won me back (now I gotta go off and buy another copy of BlueRoom). I also noticed LX slipping in CD's here and there. Set List (in as close an order as my alcohol ridden brain can remember) - ------------------------- Mile long lump of lard. Funny you should mention that...when my friends and I first got there, we inadvertantly wandered into the Papa Roach (?) show (being held at the venue next door to the Orb - both are in the same building)....our tickets weren't even checked! It was only the coat-check girl who asked us if we weren't at the right show, as we didn't seem 'dressed' for Papa Roach. Looking around, and seeing what mostly looked like black-jean clad teenage males with rock-band t-shirts, we were inclined to agree - based on the rather vibrant nature of most of the clothing worn by Orb fans. Given the nature of the artists performing last night, I fully expected dancing to be such a form. I did it myself. However... Last night also proved to be a true test of patience for both my girlfriend and myself. Shortly before the Orb went on, a rather tall girl with ~very~ fluffy hair planted herself in front of us. Not a problem - until the music started. This girl decided not to just dance, but to breach every known rule of personal space while putting on some type of self-absorbed, writhing, and damn annoying "performance". I'm not just talking about her being somewhat close - Metro is small, the show was sold out, you expect to be rubbing shoulders at some point. But this girl seemed to feel she had an arm's length radius of space around her where she could toss her head and hair back, whip her arms around and just do whatever she wanted. She didn't. After she bumped into - and quite hard I might add - my girlfriend a few times, I switched places and proceeded to get her hair in my face more times than I can remember, my nose hit by the back of her head several times, and even a couple of shot! s to the crotch (!) by her flail ing arms. I repeatedly pushed her away, asked her to watch it, and even stuck my elbow into her back to get my point across. Never happened. Listers, I am ~not~ a baby and know what to expect at GA shows. This was waaay beyond tolerable. So here's my plea - guys and gals, if you're going to get stoned at a show and enter your own little world where you feel the need to dance like a monkey on two boxes of No-Doz, do those of us who don't feel like being abused by your gyrations a favor and GET THE HELL INTO A CORNER WITH THE REST OF YOUR KIND. Places like Metro are ~not~ appropriate vehicles for your version of tripping the light fantastic, but since there's no rule against what you do, show some freakin' courtesy. And this is coming from someone who used to get high quite a bit. Slow down there killer. You seem to be assuming that drugs are what made this woman act like an idiot. I admit that, generally for the average person, consuming drugs makes them act more like an idiot. But no amount of drugs in your system will make you ignore the pleas of others around you; to assume that drugs were the reason for her acting like an idiot is silly. She may have been on drugs, but I promise you that's not why she was dancing in a way that decreased the fun for others. Personally, when I went to see them last week, I was the high one. Very much so. But I was in front and the place was crowded, so I didn't try to dance (I'm 6' 3" and weight over 260). Some asshole next to me, later in the show, decided that he wanted to thrash about and started giving me shit about not following suit. So I ignored him. Point being, if you're an asshole who doesn't listen to people then that's who you are. This seems to be a chronic problem with clubs everywhere. You stick people in a space where they have to be that close, can't move around, have limited access to fluids, and anything short of total re-ventilation of the air in the room every 10 seconds, and it seems like the room turns into the 7th level of hell, heatwise. Wow. Fucking wow. This was the best Orb show I've seen yet. Live bass was incredible. I can't imagine a show without LFC and Blue Room and Towers... But what the hell happened to Orbus Terrarum?!?! I even wore my Orbus shirt hoping some track would get played. Plateau? No. Bummer. So these three fucking frat boys tried to push their way to the front, where I was leaning against the railing right in front of the middle security guard (and in front of the big-ass sampler). I almost got in a fight! :D Too bad, too... I would have loved to have them all kicked out. Elbows, names, an occasional shove or two... Some people's kids. So Eric from Madison -- please contact me. I had the most excellent time in Chicago yesterday. I live in Lawrence and decided to go down to Chicago and back to Lawrence for the two shows. I got down to Chicago and to the Metro at around noon. I didn't really have anything to do so I walked in and hung out for awhile. I soon met Fil (Autolump). I talked with him for awhile. He brought me some coffee and we talked for awhile. Alex, Simon, and Jon were all out shopping. He said they had ADAT troubles in the last three shows. In Toronto they couldn't finish Thursday's Keeper because of the ADAT problem. So they opened up a new ADAT box and replaced the messed up one. The ADAT machine is what Witchman used for his set and also what The Orb used to play their tracks. Autolump mostly used the DJ Setup which was 2 Vestax PD-2000s (reverse, 50%, etc) hooked up to a Vestax MW-3000, 3 channel mixer (coincidentally this is the mixer I have) , a Kaoss Pad hooked up for the right deck and one of the Denon DJ CD Players. A digital delay hooked up to the master out of the MW-3000 and out to the Yamaha mixing board on the other stand on stage. The mixing board was next to the ADAT controller and the 3, 8-channel ADAT machines were on the floor next to Simon's Powerbook G4 (running Logic Audio Platinum) next to the mixingboard/ADAT stand. In the middle was Simon's bass setup. The whole time they were setting up and practicing the tracks on the ADAT, I was recording. They practiced Blue Room, Turn it Down, and Thursday's Keeper. They paused and talked sometimes. The recording came out pretty good. I haven't listened to it all yet but I will be recording from tape to digital format (CD and the ripping to MP3) for those interested. All of the orb crew was really friendly. I talked mostly to Fil and Simon. I talked to LX for some time and he introduced me to Simon. I gave LX and Fil, each one of my cds. I met Jon and some of the roadies and the soundman. The whole time they were warming up and testing out the gear was really cool. They just let me sit/stand there in the empty theater while they warmed up. It was like my own personal orb show!! A day to never forget! Doors opened at 8:30 and it got packed in there really quick. By the time Witchman was on there was no room to dance or move around. Even moving in the back of the Metro was a tight squeeze. Autolump (Fil) was on first for about a half hour. His set was really good. I recognized a few tracks that he DJ'd from the Badorb site that I recorded onto Audio CDs.. He played Bob 3a and 3b. LX then came on and DJ'd some records. His set was good. He played an eclectic mix. Lots of chunky beats and drumnbass. Witchman was on next. I thought his set was excellent! I think they played some drumnbass tracks as an interlude before "The Orb". Soon they all returned and the started with Mile Long Lump of Lard. They played a lot of classic tracks (no Orbvs, Orblivion, or Pommes tracks) Blue Room, Perpetual Dawn, Outlands, LFC. I don't have setlist yet. Turn it Down, Terminus, Thursday's Keeper, EDM were excellent. The use of the ADAT allows them to make variations in each track from its album release. I can't wait to hear Gavin's recordings. I met Gavin after the show. I looked for Brian in the Orbvs shirt but didn't see him. I didn't see any x-mission signs. I also saw The BadOrb 12" release. It has the Badorb logo except in full color. Really cool. They had 5 difft tshirts at the show. Dark Gray with garphoo - goat, cow, cat on front and badorb logo on back. A dark gray smaller tight shirt with the cat and a cream colored shirt with cydonia on front. Really good quality black Orb baseball hats with "orb" right above the bill in white lettering on the side. They also had Witchman vs Jammin Unit - "Inferno" cds for sale. All shirts, cd, hat were $12. Well Gavin should be here in Lawrence soon or else I'm meeting him at the show.. I gotta get some rest.
