I admit that, generally for the average person, consuming drugs makes them act more like an idiot. But no amount of drugs in your system will make you ignore the pleas of others around you; to assume that drugs were the reason for her acting like an idiot is silly. She may have been on drugs, but I promise you that's not why she was dancing in a way that decreased the fun for others.>> Actually, I'm not assuming as she lit one up right as the show started. I'm not saying that was the sole reason for her acting the way she did, but I was quite able to recognize that "zone" she was in, and I do partly attribute it to her oblivousness. <> I have no doubt she heard what I was saying, but still feel her being stoned attributed to hear being more into herself and less aware of the crowd around her. She acknowledged, several times, my "mini" shoves and elbows, but five minutes later was back to doing the same thing. > like being abused by your gyrations a favor and GET THE HELL INTO A > CORNER WITH THE REST OF YOUR KIND. I can't think of a better time OR place to smoke a phattie than right up front at a live orb event. ;)<< You misunderstood me here, I was saying "your kind" as in - the kind of people who become oblivous to the fact that there are others around them, not someone who gets high. Although I no longer get high I have no problem with it, and of course, expected it at the show (and boy was it there =). Or maybe the "tripping the light" comment was confusing - I was referring to the "oblivious dancing", not the smoking. I encounter this everywhere, shows, movies, restaurants - it just seems like common courtesy is a liability these days. And considering how long it had been since the Orb were last here, I didn't care to spend the night dodging this frenetic chick, I wanted to get into the music! That's my main point. > On a lighter note - man, Metro needs to get some fans that actually > circulate air - it was sweltering in there! >>This seems to be a chronic problem with clubs everywhere. You stick people in a space where they have to be that close, can't move around, have limited access to fluids, and anything short of total re-ventilation of the air in the room every 10 seconds, and it seems like the room turns into the 7th level of hell, heatwise. We need freon coils on the walls. :) << Yeah, it was crazy walking in from the bitter winds, thawing a bit and then baking for the rest of the night- if I don't get sick I'll consider myself pretty lucky! Anyway, I don't mean to sound ultra negative - besides the aforementioned, the show was excellent. I really think hearing the new material live gave it some "oomph". Blue Room was fantastic. I hope they come around again, maybe play at a bigger place - anyone on the list see the show at the Riviera in '95? That was a perfect place for the Orb to perform. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 21:23:36 EDT From: BluRoom@aol.com Subject: (orb) OT - Music recommendation Hey all, I hope you won't mind the OT post, but since I've picked up so many good music recommendations from the list I wanted to give one back. Maybe it's just 'cause we had to wait so long to see them again in Toronto. That being said... It was very cool to meet Ben who had lumps on his head and inspired me to bring Twizzlers, James who actually lives in Toronto but mistakenly called me Grant, and Gavin who was happy that I liked his (dare I say it?) audience recording of LX at Smart Bar and had many many Orb wristbands on from a very very long drive. My girlfriend (first Orb show) also mentioned that she had never smelled so much pot at any other concert before which brings us to another topic also recently discussed right here. I have got to say that smokin' at a show and flailing wildly at a show are not necessarily related and it should not be assumed that they are. Being high and being rude do not go hand in hand. People who flail deserve to get elbowed in the head if they are being ignorant to those around them. It is only after you bash them in the head that they notice because it hurts a lot. Regular shoving does not seem to work because in a crowd you expect it. As an experiment this was the first Orb show that I saw high as a kite and I have to say it was an experience but not a necessity. Enough of the ranting... Maybe you're just one of those self centered fools who doesn't care what they do in public places and this is all fine with you. If I went to a punk show I would expect to be knocked around. That's why I don't go to them. This was ~not~ a punk show, therefore I found it annoying. Plenty of other people at the show were able to dance and get into the music without being draped all over the people next to them. But gosh John, you seem to know it all, don't you? I hope I run into you at a show sometime. I'll recreate for you what I went through, and we'll see how tolerant you are. # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. >> # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 14:11:53 -0400 (EDT) From: "Benjamin L. What it really comes down to is this: People are jerks. Not all of them, and not under every set of circumstances, but anyone has the potential to be a jerk. This in addition to the fact that, for some reason, more people seem to be jerks at clubs and concerts, explains what we have all experienced at least once or twice at a club or concert venue. The question becomes how do you respond to it? :) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 14:26:50 -0400 (EDT) From: laerm Subject: RE: (orb) mini metro blurb On Wed, 25 Apr 2001 BluRoom@aol.com wrote: > Sorry that all of you who have responded are so hypersensitive about > your pot. If the Orb (or any band for that matter) allowed taping the boots would be fantastic with the right equipment. A lot of what you hear on bootlegs by the Orb and Stones Roses were done with inferior equipment and recorded in stealth. As a fan of many bands who allow recording at their shows I can honestly say that in many cases I prefer the well-made AUD over the SBD. Hull > I don't mean to urinate on anyone's bonfire, but of all the live shows > bootlegs I've heard [not just the Orb] the sound quality is shit. Yeah bootleg recording truly is an art. It requires a lot of skill and a lot of practice, and usually some luck. But if you want to hear a bootleg that really is of excellent sound quality, check out Orbital: Live in Birmingham. It sounds like a studio album. > Not just the "quality" of the sound, but added crowd noise, acoustics etc > etc - surely the solution would be to get friendly with someone on the sound > desk? You have to find soundboard boots. I agree that often times crowd recordings suck, but sometimes they're not bad. You have to keep in mind that when you listen to a studio album, especially by a grou like the orb, there were weeks and weeks of work put into all the details; the mixing, the effects, the panning, the levels, filters, etc etc ad nauseum. Not only do you not get this with a live recording, but usually you're working from a single sound source (mic or soundboard), which limits you even more, to say nothing of other problems. > I'm sure that they record them all anyway - All the DJ mix tapes are done > from the sound desk. That's not always true. :) And a lot of times the reason those exist is because the DJ's record them themselves to listen to later. > I've got numerous Stone Roses bootlegs for example, and to be honest they > are just pathetic. One video in particular has some knob in the crowd > repeatedly shouting "turn that fucking light off" which get slightly > irritating after the 4th or 5th time. It's all about who recorded it, and the conditions under which it was recorded. You just have to keep things in perspective. :) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 14:30:39 -0400 (EDT) From: "Benjamin L. Whoa! When was this!? I don't remember seeing this person. I do remember a rather mountainous person wearing a blue suit just sort of moving around through the front once or twice, but no ballet guys... # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Apr 2001 14:31:12 EDT From: BluRoom@aol.com Subject: RE: (orb) mini metro blurb In a message dated Wed, 25 Apr 2001 10:42:53 AM Eastern Daylight Time, Matt.Skinner@skanska.co.uk writes: << I'm with Simon on this one. Now, if you're talking about speed, crack or any drug apart from dope then it's a different story. You all seem to be missing my point. Is there no one out there that understands what I'm saying? Come on, I can't be the only one on the list that feels this way! =) I'm ~not~ attacking or condemning pot smoking in general. I ~am~ saying that I think people - and they do exist, regardless of your own personal experiences - that get high (I use that example because that's what I experienced), or drink or WHATEVER at these shows and get wrapped up in their own worlds and become oblivious to others around them like this girl did should find somewhere else in the club to go and "express". Your mileage may vary. Maybe some of you enjoy that kind of experience or feel it goes with the territory. I don't. Many people I know don't. Fire away, I'm done trying to explain.
