Essentially, a "lucid dream" is a dream during which occurence one is *conscious* of the fact that he is dreaming. I have experienced a *tremendous* number of lucid dreams in the past couple years (on average, one every two weeks). I use mine to experience extreme fear. Don't laugh--not as bizarre as it sounds. I basically get the rush from a terrifying experience, but without any of the danger. For me, I am terrified of heights and deep water (despite the fact that I'm an excellent swimmer), so I "fly" quite a bit, and explore the deepest depths of the oceans in these dreams. The sensations are so incredibly real--it's really quite amazing! I most frequently experience lucid dreams under two conditions: 1.) If my daughter wakes up in the middle of the night (thus, waking both me and my wife up as well), and I try to get back to sleep, but cannot. I'll lay in bed for as much as TWO HOURS before falling back to sleep (a sort of insomnia, I suppose), and then I'll drift off eventually. I have lucide dreams in this condition about 50% of the time. 2.) If I wake up duirng "normal" times (for me, about 7:00 a.m.), and on those rare occasions, I get to go back to sleep (the occasional Saturday morning), and I put some music in the cd player (usually David Arkenstone's _In the Wake of the Wind_, Tangerine Dream's _Le Parc_, and usually one other electronic album), and go back to sleep. About 25% of the time, I have a lucid dream then. (Actually, I don't use these dreams to explore "fear" so much as revel in the atmosphere produced by the music, as one can hear the music while experiencing dreams.) I'm rambling. Anyone else experience this stuff? Incidentally, O.O.B.E.'s (out-of-body experiences) are very likely a variation of lucid dreams. When I experience lucid dreams, I frequently feel like I'm leaving my body. There's a weird "rushing sound" in my head, and it's a scary-yet-wonderful experience. Enought of this. There is no sure-fire method, but different techniques work for different people. LaBerge suggests keeping a "dream log" by your bed, and write down every dream you have. Eventually you will come to realize some "patterns" or recurring "themes" in your dreams, and will hopefully recognize them AS dreams during the dream itself. Incidentally, many people who start to become lucid end up waking up as a result. LaBerge suggested two techniques to AVOID waking up after becoming lucid--and they both work, 'cause I've tried them both: 1.) Make yourself fall backwards in the dream. In other words, you're standing up...just let yourself fall backwards. 2.) Make yourself spin around in a circle a few times. These both sound really strange, but during a lucid dream, the sensations are almost as real as the real thing, and this somehow triggers some chemical reaction in the brain to keep you asleep. I was a philosophy major in college, not a psychology major, so I don't know the first thing about the psychological reasons behind any of this phenomenon, aside from what I've read in LaBerg's first book. check out the books of Carlos Castaneda esp the Don Juan trilogy. he has quite a few interesting things to say about dreams and reality.

I'm very impressed that they happen so frequently and so intensley with Vince. I've had a number of them, but not in quite a while (although i haven't tried either) One of the techniques from that book, that has worked for me, is when you are dreaming try to look at your hands. Once you become aware that you are more than just a pair of eyes 'watching a movie' (as some of my dreams have been like)... you seem to get the idea that hey i can move and stuff with out having to a) watch youself in third person b) 'go with the flow' of the dream at first i found it difficult to really just walk around like when you're awake ... like i would want to change the station on my radio (in my dream) I knew that the i was dreaming --- but when i went to lean down it was like i was moving in syrup -- you know like real slow and forced movements. or when trying to perform some other action -- my hand wouldn't quite go left when i tried to move it that direction... these 'problem's eventually lighted up, and it was much easier to get stuff done... I think we heard almost all of the new album (which was cool), but I would have preferred to hear a little more of a variety of stuff from ALL the albums. Of course, you can't please everyone all the time... Regardless, it was definitely an awesome show. The only downer for me was when these two really scary 'gay skinhead' guys got up in my face for no reason whatsoever. It's interesting how people in larger cities go to great lengths to look as menacing as possible. Anyway, does anybody know if the show was taped? I would love to somehow get this show on CDR or in MP3 format. I'm really hoping that one of the servers will have this show on it before too long. The October 1993 show in San Francisco was videotaped, and a post to the list shortly after offered copies. The title was something like "An Evening with the Orb". I was at that show & this tape is the one thing that I always regret not owning. If anyone can help me out with this, I would be most appreciative. The Orb only got to play for like 25 minutes before getting shut down, at which point Lx threw off his headphones and stormed off stage....Not only that, from what they did play, they were haveing technical difficulties with the mixing console. No badorb stuff anywhere, just Cydonia t's This was my first Orb show, and quit frankly was very dissapointed, espeacially after driving all that way and the promoters cut them off.. By the way, what was up with all that black grease Lx & crew were sporting on their faces. The rest of the festival was good though. I saw Adam Freeland, Christopher Lawrence, Fatboy Slim, Doc Martin just to name a few..... As far as synesthesia goes, he spoke of numbers that appear to be of a certain color. The reason for this, he said, was a specific genetic defect in which during the later stages of brain development, certain early neural connections that were formed, do not get cleaved as the normally would be. In the case of numbers and colors, they've found that the number part of the brain (cognition or from recognition, im not sure), and the color part of the brain are very close to one another. If early connections that form between these areas are not cleaved like theyre supposed to be, then synesthesia results, so when you see certain numbers, your brain cant help but also stimulate a color part of your brain. Ramachandran also talked about phantom limb syndrome, there was this guy whose arm was amputated, and when certain parts of his face were touched, the nerve signals to the brain somehow "seeped in" to a nearby section that receives arm impulses, so the guy thought his amputated limb was being touched. Its all not as simple as that, but Ramachandran speculated on some neuroscience of (visual) art, he claims to have reduced a lot of art down to 7, or 9, or so basic principles. I dunno, the work he is doing in the field is still very young, but it was still quite fascinating. In relation to the orb, what initially fascinated me about them, was (more, of course, when i was substantially drugged) that (also best with headphones) the music was always took on a very visual, and lifelike quality.
