It was quite a day. As Chris earlier mentioned the promoters cut the sound at 12:30 am this morning the scheduled end time of the show. It would seem that Tricky went a little over, and set up time for the Orb took a little too long. So we got screwed in the end. LX and Witchman left the stage flipping off the promoters. Can't say that I blame them. They wanted to play!!! I got one of the three set lists that Autolump handed out after most of the people left. I believe they had made a concession to play a shorter set, because on the back of the set listing is a longer set list that seems to have been scraped. They opened with the Door's "The End" from the Apocalypse Now soundtrack (hence all the camouflage paint they were wearing on stage Chris. I believe LX threw out two of three Badorb shirts and some Badorb 12" plus a stuffed lamb like on the Live '93 cover. Got a few pictures taken. Was hoping to get some pictures of the list members, but it was dark and couldn't really find people till after the show had ended. They needed some outdoor lighting and trash cans on the grounds. Kept pretty busy staying irie all day and catching Swedish Eagle, New Deal (they were pretty good), Adam Freeland and Ian Pooley who both played good sets. Andrea Parker was next & saw 5 minutes of Photek before leaving for St. Germain who was excellent, a 50 minute delay cut into their stage time. Caught a few minutes of Paul Oakenfold before catching nearly two hours of Kruder and Dorfmeister who were the shit. Let me tell you, that was a treat. Super phat. Caught the end of Tricky and just waited for the Orb. Just wanted to hear the full set. Heard a lot of people around me yelling this the artist they came to see. It did end on a down not. Although this is because I have every track on the CD from other compilations - some from Twisted Records: Eclipse comp, some Dragonfly Records: Ambient Dub Volume 7 (BOTH CDS ARE *GREAT* IF YOU DON'T HAVE THEM - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED), and some from other CDs. And the "The Rob" track - tee hee - LX in disguise ala Cydonia (forget which track.) The Killing Joke Requim mix we've heard before too (and not a great mix either)... Hmm... A fairly decent collection of tunes, but I just wish they were new and fresh vs. previously released. (sorry we couldn't chat longer, jason!) after that, it was a power nap before heading off to Coachella. overall, the festival was fun (albeit trashy), but the disaster of an orb show really ended things on a sour note. their stage had been running late all day, and the lads didn't get on until about midnight (they were slated to end at 12:30). although they managed to get through Mile Long allright, technically, things started to fall apart resulting in the strangest version of Turn It Down ever to be heard! LX & co were yelling at each other and i believe Fil was frantically trying to fix Witchman's gear while LX spun a record to buy time. they got it fixed and hinted at Perpetual Dawn and Outlands before launching into a full version of LFC. that led into Once More, which was cut-off mid song by the promoters. the boyz were clearly pissed and encouraged everyone to boo the promoters as LX slammed down his headphones and began chucking things off the stage: his token plush sheep, a couple records, t-shirts, and then guzzled half a bottle of liquor before passing it off to the audience to join in the drinking! definitely dramatic, but not in the way i was hoping for. at least i had the pleasure of a wonderful SF gig. i feel badly for many people (like a lot of my friends) who had never seen the Orb before - it was a terrible show, and a horrible downer at the end of the night. anyone on the list catch the sheep? Coachella was one of the best festivals I have ever been to until the total bullshit at the end. What kind of festival pulls the plug on the Orb at 12:30, I mean thats pretty freakin early, what were the promoters worried that we wouldn't get our beauty rest? I think they were probably having so many technical difficulties (most notably the fucked up Turn it Down) because they weren't allowed to set up properly. My point is if you're going to try and cram 30 acts into one day you got to be a little flexible on the ending time, in fact the Orb's stage wasn't the only one running behind. There's got to be a lot of really pissed Orb fans out there, I mean if I hadn't been at the SF show the night before I probably would have rioted! Despite the fact that I saw some incredible music (Adam Freeland, Kruder & Dorfmeister, and Plaid all kicked ass) I felt ripped off at the end and I don't think I would go back to Coachella again. Pt1. (long) Just returning from my West coast excursion with the Orb. And what an experience that was. It's also an experience to say I had seem quite possibly the best and worst shows of the Orb tour. I landed in San Francisco Thursday evening to meet up with Rachel, who would then proceed to be my uncompromising hostess fro the weekend. Unfortunately I wasn't aware of the Squarepusher/Plaid show in SF until too, late, I was unable to go due to the lack of available tickets. But I did make my way about the city for a few hours of entertainment. Nothing special some which was very disappointing, mainly the Johna Sharp/OST thing at 26Mix. Friday during the day I ran around SF to hit all the places I like, such as Amoeba, Japantown, the SFMOMA, and the Yerba Buena Center. Quite an excellent day. I found a lovely Totoro doll for my girlfriend back in Chicago at Japantown. Then the Real excursion began. I met up downtown with Rachel and her boyfriend and Steve Robbles (another fine list member) in tow. We had some lovely Thai food, and hit a bar for some drinks while we waited for the doors to open up at the Maritime Hall. Although the Maritime Hall was quite an annoying venue, that didn't keep the Orb and crew from rocking the house! And the SF crowd was ready to take all they could dish out. We ended up running into Seofon who was great to see and hand with again. Aoutlump played some of his choice hyperactive techno, while Witchman played a really nice set. But when the Orb came on, whoa boy! They were on! Again opening with MLLoL, The thick beats and bubbly synths cut through the Maritime like nothing else. "You can feel the heat, you can feel the flash" yep, that was a proper warning. And then Promise came on. I actually enjoyed it this time, with it's extended breaks that swam around the maritime. then followed an nice version of Turn it Down, and then Blue Room Ahh the Bass Rocked again!!! What came next was quite possibly was the longest and coolest performance of Perpetual Dawn I have ever heard. You should have seen Rachel, she was in utter bliss during this track shouting "Yippee!".. Then Towers of Dub bass shook everyone's booty. (that little ditty) then LFC, Outlands ("I don't know if I was high or if I was just... WOOOSSHHH") all followed with such class that It blew me, and the entire crowd away. Once More, a track that was entirely skipped at the Chicago show, was played with a really heavy beat. It was good but still, I don't care for that track very much. Then came Hamlet of Kings (which also wasn't played in Chicago), which put me and most of the crowd to sleep, or maybe they were being considerate, and making that the bathroom break song. EBM then came on and is such a cinematic song that it led up to the Final climatic assault of Thursday's keeper. Those amen break made the crowd go Nuts! Terminus was also played somewhere in there but I don't remember quite where, again this was another song that they didn't play in Chicago. Alex, Simon, and Witchman's energy was high and then seemed to be feeding of the crowd, for their performance was awesome. Alex was giving Witchman Big bearhugs during Thursday's Keeper. Overall the Chicago show was about 60% of this amazing night. There were additional songs, and longer performances (which didn't ever get dull, except for Hamlet of Kings). The crowd, albeit packed, was very respectful and fully into the show. We then ran our tired asses home to get a few hours of sleep. We had to wake before the sun was even up so we could make our way to Indio for Coachella... Scott # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Apr 2001 15:43:40 -0700 (PDT) From: steveO Subject: Re: (orb) SF/Coachella okay, first of all, the sf show rocked! simon even played BOTH bass lines of 'blue room' (which he didn't do in d.c.)! they also threw in 'hamster of kings,' which i love and had been remixed with a jungle-type percussive section at the end, and of course, some of the mixes were pretty different from the other show (most notably 'promis' and the extended 'perpetual dawn'). about the in-store cancellation - i was scheduled to interview lx for high times magazine (!), but at the last minute mca records called to tell me that lx's brother in england was very ill and so lx cancelled all press obligations and the in-store 'cos he just didn't wanna deal with it, which was more than understandable. i'm glad he did actually, 'cos i woulda felt like a real tool asking him goofy high times questions like 'do you prefer joints or bong hits?' while his mind was on a personal crisis. i'll let you guys know when the high times thing gets rescheduled and when it'll run. but all things considered, it was pretty amazing that he was able to deliver what witchman and simon at coachella said was the best show of the tour (a very emotional one, as was stated before, with lx hugging both simon and witchman at different points in the show - i personally feel after seeing them 2 1\2 times on this tour that witchman is a great addition to the orb, whatever anyone's feeling about andy may be, and i'm sure lx does too). this conversation with simon and witchy was in the aftermath of THAT show, which was obviously a disaster. i was backstage for the whole mess (i dunno if it was problems with the dat or the mixer or both, but at one point simon and witchman AND fil were all trying to get it fixed at once and looked like their heads might explode from the chaos), and it sucked because those in the front booing after the abbreviated performance didn't see the line of cops backstage forcing the sound guy to turn off the amps. simon and witchman were understably pissed - i told them that someone from the festival shoulda had the balls to get on a mic and tell the crowd that it wasn't the orb's fault. rachel sez witchman yelled this at the crowd, but i'm sure not everybody heard, and i'm sure there are unfortunately some people in the crowd who hadn't seem them before and wouldn't again. very sad. equally sad for the el lay peeps, for whom this was their sole chance of seeing them on the tour (i dunno about the whole area one thing, and if they'll get to do a full set). i told them that there were a few people who had got to see them the night before so could put this set in perspective, and they both said the sf show had been the peak. 'but that doesn't make up for this,' witchman said after. ouch. someone asked simon when they were coming back to el lay. Hi Allz,

as you may have read already (djcasey), the orb got shut down after playing for about half an hour! I was/am really pissed (angry, not drunk) off about the whole deal!!!!

At least I got to hear them play for as long as I did, and although it started a bit slow, was building in to an amazing set!

I'll give you the run down:

(as an aside, I went to the last Coachella festival in 1999, and although they were supposed to provide water fountains, they did not. They charged $3 for a bottle with 3 gulps of water in it. This year I emailed them and asked them to allow sealed water in the venue. The rules said no water allowed in, or backpacks, or chairs, or anything. So the guy emails me back and says there will be plenty of water fountains; he'll make sure of it. What a load of shit. When I arrived the parking lot guards were saying no backpacks, but I brought mine anyway and they let me in (some folks were not so lucky). Inside there were no water fountains. I checked all over, asking securtiy and first aid. No one knew of any water fountains. I managed to talk a security guard in to letting me run to my car and get a 2.5 gallon container. I thanked him whole heartedly and shared that water with all who asked. This gived you an idea of who was running this show).

When I got my set schedule, I noticed a problem right away. As usual, the best acts were all on at the same time (Murphy's Law) and the orb was scheduled to play last, at 11:30. I knew it was going to be trouble because the festival was to go on from noon to midnight. I was hoping that it would work itself out, but as the day progressed the tent they were to play in was running late by about half an hour. At that rate they wouldn't play till midnight--the very end of the festival! Damn...

I kept hoping things would work themselves out (positive mental attitude) and tried to enjoy the day's music. The way things were working out was a sign of things to come. I didn't get to see any band for more than a half hour, because of another band that I wanted to catch. For example, K&D were on 9:00, Roni Size 9:00, Fatboy Slim 9:15, and Jane's Addiction 9:30 (not counting the late start times).

Andrea Parker didn't show up and dieselboy filled in admirably! Squarepusher was a little sonically disturbing, but lots of fun and energized! Iggy Pop was super! He's got the body of a 25 year old ; very strange...(HGH?) Bad Company was a junglist group (not paul rodgers) and they were fun, Uberzone was entertaining, as were Doc Martin and Paul Okenfold. I missed Plaid because Del (the funky homosapien) went on too long, and by the time I got back they were done. Raymond Roker was fun too ( I likee jungle). Oh yea, Photek kicked ass too. One HIGH note was St. Germain; really cool jazz-meets-techno sound. I plan on diving into their sound in the near future. 

So, I headed over to the Mojave tent to get ready for the orb. I showed up just as Tricky finished, and it looked like the orb were not going to be on too late. My spirits were lifted as I saw the air filled orb moving on stage and the screens getting set up. While a wolfed down a burrito, I chatted with a dude from Mexico City named Roberto (?) who was psyched for the show as well (although he said he's never seen the orb down there or any mention--I thought they had some gigs down there; maybe they were cancelled). I scuttled up towards the front before it got TOO crowded, and started anticipating... Finally they started to go on. It started a bit slow, but they proceeded to grow and build the sound, until I began to reach that place of pure joy!!!

AND THEN THEY GET CUT OFF!!!!! ARRRRGGRGGRGRGRRHRHRHRHR!!!

There was some confusion... but it appeared that they were told to stop. The large crowd started to boo and curse and etc. Not at the band, but at the Coachella dude who is on the side of the stage. The band came back to center stage to try to explain and they recieved a loud chorus of cheers. For a moment it seemed that they might come back and do one more, but alas, no such luck!

Alex tossed out a few things once the show stopped. He actually handed someone the rest of his bottle of liquor (looked like a bottle of cognac or something similar) and apologetically bowed to the crowd. He threw out a stuffed sheep that some lucky bugger caught, and also tossed out a couple of albums. He threw 1 album (no sleeve) to someone and then what looked like the sleeve was thrown to someone else.

On the way out I noticed a beige Cydonia (seal balancing a pyramid) T shirt for 20 bucks, but I didn't think it was worth it. IMO. Sorry, but no hats were available Sacha.

I am no good at remembering song titles so this is what i wrote down:

Afterwards, the bloke cleaning up handed out 3 set lists, 1 of which I managed to copy. The set was printed on both sides of the page, differing slightly. Here goes:

I think side 1 was being played, but side 2 looked like lots of fun!

Dont' get me wrong, the music kicked ass! It was the set up that was fucked up! Too many acts and not enough time to enjoy them.

I really think the LIVE ORB CD that was mentioned by someone would be an awesome idea. The studio releases seem held back compared to their live stuff. I've seen them live 6 (?) times and they are more experimental and wild, live. There were some cool samples thrown in to the audio stew that was cooking, with one song's flavor leading right into another.

Ohhh, what might have been...

Plus, all the money that Moby is making from Calvin Klein... I just think it's bullshit. When I look up the word "sellout" in my dictionary, I see a picture of moby. (but I still like his music, just not his "philosophy") and yeah, I know that all the artists want to get paid, but still... there is a lot of money floating around there... I bet the tour doesn't even come close to selling out though... probably like 40% capacity will sell.. who wants to see a "rave show" in an arena? choice between seats, or slanted grass.... okay.. I was never heavily into Moby, but I like him and man I was so pissed at his MTV tour with Bush (Yeah, because they have such similar music styles).
