Wicked lights, great visuals - really loves the ones that accompanied Outlands: all sorts of different rollercoaster/train track/mine shaft/computer animation layered over eachother - very cool. The live versions of the songs were excellent too - ONCE MORE! OH MY GOD!!! The live version blew me away! Acapella / more spacy/ethereal vocal intro...then BOOM! Full on electro breakbeat attack! Put some serious energy into that previously poppy tune! With the intellibeams going off simultaneously, whew! Kicked ass! The whole freakin' show kicked ass!!! Alex looked like he was really enjoying himself, which was cool to see. I wanted to stoke him out with a spliff, but the crowds at this show, especially on the floor, were *immense.* I was SO GREATFUL for the phat balcony seats we had with a great view. If I was on the floor I think I would have gone mad! Freakin' packed down there it was!! But I still managed to spot ->Rachel with her blue sequined pants! Amazing! Hi Rachel! I was a bit diappointed by the shirt selection though - the cream colored Cydonia one is cool, but the rest were those freaky cyborg animals from the BadOrb site, and they only had smalls and some mediums of those as well. Alot of people that listen to Moby haven't been exposed to very much electronic dance music, and I think that simply bringing that sound into the mainstream is a positive thing. Think about it this way, if you had a nine year old daughter would you rather she listen to the Backstreet Boys or Moby. Compared to all the crap out there Moby ain't that bad. I own Play and while alot of it sucks (i.e. Southside) some of the tracks sound pretty good in the middle of a set. I mean I see all these people saying they listen to some of the coolest electronica and so I take a listen, and it's something like the venga boys. They think that's what techno is, and always has been/will be. More music getting attention like Moby's will prob. just make a whole new generation of candy ravers, who if they listened to a lot more electronica that's out there (I.E. orb, FSOL, autechre, death in vegas, etc., etc.,) would prob. think it's just a bunch of crappy, pointless music. But then again I don't want all these bands that I love to stay somewhat underground, so they should be played instead of Moby, but the big money machines want something that is catchy and simple to play on all their ads. It seems to contradict the point of why he started. He wanted to make something new; fresh and original; something for the underground kids to get into. Now, it's not made especially for them, but for bubbly sorority girls and their keg pumping yahoo boyfriends whooping it up at Spring Break. The point was lost in the midst of some MTV-inflated ego trip. Moby still puts on an air that he's just a timid, humble guy collecting records somewhere. But beneath all that pretentious post punk pseudo-intellectual bulls**t he spews out of his word hole is the realization that he's a hack; a fraud. ...People fail to realize that Moby's been using the same equipment on his album since 1993. The only difference that made "Play" work was adding those blues loops. The rest was just good marketing. You get one hit that takes off ["Bodyrock" was first]. Then push the artist to market the others in a way that would grab the attention of a public with a poor attention span via commercials. Maybe Moby meant in the beginning when making "Play". But once the first single started to pick up, he treated his music not as art, but as a commodity to be sold like those cool new running shoes or that intense minty gum on the TV ads. The public hears it on the TV and then on the radio. Then in the mall at their favortie clothing store. Then, they think, "Wow! This must be something hip. Maybe I should buy a copy and see what the craze is about. Maybe I'll be or at least feel hip." Perfect plan. Popularity through ominpresence. Shove it down their throats and they've eventually roll over and buy it; maybe even learn to like it. Most musicians have some sort of a message in their music. Moby sure had one alright. It wasn't a message that benefits his artistic integrity. It conveys that selling yourself can always make you a great deal of money, even if any knuckle headed kid in Jncos zooted on ecstacy off the street can take his place easily. He should know that anyone can do what he does with the right equipment and the right people behind him. This rings true of many other pop stars [i.e.-- Dr. Dre, Limp Bikzit, The Backsync Degrees, Britney Aguilera [a deliberate mistake to prove there's no difference in the two], Ricky Martin]. It just reenforces that hollow nature of the music industry. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 May 2001 04:03:55 -0000 From: "Otis Brown" Subject: (orb) moby I must say that his stuff between "Ambient" and "Animal Rights" is interesting. This is sad, but only somewhat true. Considering that Maxim just put out a hip-hop album (Hell's Kitchen, which isn't bad), and that Leeroy left to focus on his "Longman" project (electro), it's not like they're not doing *anything*. Liam better get off his duff, though, since it's been a longer break between "Fat of the Land" and now than between "Music for the Jilted" and "FotL". There's also the fact that Prodigy was pretty much touring nonstop from about 1994 to 1999, right? That has to take a toll. Of course, by my math, that means that Orbital's album is on time (three years since "The Middle of Nowhere"), Underworld will be in overdue territory soon (live albums don't count, though the DVD might. Video editing is a lot of work!), and the Chemical Brothers will be in overdue-land soon (as shown by that Music:response ep they put out in the states, capitalizing on nearly three-year-old material). Moby, as well, is getting overdue--Play was from 1999 and we're still hearing about it, so that means a new album won't be for a while, esp. if he's still touring. When will we get an electronic band with the work ethic of the Ozric Tentacles, who seem to release some new material every year? Granted, some of it ends up dodgy at that pace... This is a good point. I mean, I'll buy a new Prodigy album (considering I went through the effort to pick up just about all their singles--I even have a white label of "Everybody In the Place" that includes "Rip Up the Soundsystem"), but their moment has passed, it would seem. > if that's the case.. erm.. they should have done a live album! yeah :) (jokes) Actually (joking aside) they should have. The one show I've seen, they tore the roof off the place (The Mayan in LA). A great deal of their stuff is better live--and some stuff (like "Rock & Roll," built around an Ultramagnetic MCs sample and a drum loop from Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Peekaboo") never appears anywhere because of licensing difficulties. In a way, they have released live material: "Electronic Punks" compiles some live footage with their videos up to "Poison". > if i ever get back into music, i'll do my best to try that :) the Orb were > doing pretty well at that 'one album release per year' bit up until > Orblivion, too, counting live/remix albums of course. True, and they even kept it up until "U.F. Off": Orblivion in '97, U.F. Off in '98, and they would have released Cydonia in '99, if the Universal/Polygram problems hadn't surfaced, right? Sheesh, if it weren't for the record company, we could have had at least another two Orb albums: Cydonia and whatever came after. Something like: what if we got Cydonia 1.0 and then an album that was more consistently in the realm of "Thursday's Keeper," "Hamlet of Kings," etc.? Less griping about Cydonia, certainly. Perhaps that other album would be closer to the live show in sound? - -- Justin Roby jroby@gwu.edu, mac.com roby.justin@verizon.net http://gwu.edu/~jroby "Anything the Wright Brothers can do, the Wrong Brothers can do. Until the end of 1999 Fila Brazillia were releasing their music on a regular basis. Bullitnuts did the same thing. Alas, they broke up, although their former front man, Muzz, has had two solo albums in as many years. Of course, we cannot forget Baby Mammoth, who release something new every year (and who, in mid '96 - early 97 released TWO of their best efforts). Their new release is just around the corner. Additionally, the German acts Lemongrass, DePhazz and Marcel have all had yearly releases. The fabulous, and enviously talented, Yonderboi has also put out two releases in the last two years. In the case of Pork Recordings acts (Baby M, Fila, et al.) this kind of output can be attributed to one thing: The label does not make excessive demands on its artists to follow in the steps of their more mainstream counter parts. When is the last time you read a Baby Mammoth interview? Do you remember what the last Bullitnuts video looked like? And what mega corporation sponsored the last Fila Brazillia tour? "Hey did you see Banabila on the cover of the new Revolution? Man! That new Bentley of his in the gatefold is wicked!" I guess what I am trying to say is, perhaps more bands with Ozric's work ethic would exist, were it not for the constant pimping (of the good and bad kind) mainstream electronic acts must engage in when dealing with a major label. Then again, when your agent, your manager, your label, and the label's publishing company are taking $.93 of every dollar YOU make for THEM (not to mention charging artists for promotions out of that remaining $.07), major label artists have to whore themselves just to make ends meet. With this in mind, I turn to Cydonia. For me, it was sad to see one of my all-time favourite bands have to compromise their unique vision due to label MISmanagement. From what I heard of Cydonia V1 and the preview tracks on theorb.com I, like a lot of you, was totally stoked on hearing the new stuff. But I, also like the rest you, had to watch as our heroes best efforts were thwarted. Andy and Alex had something special and it was just about to blow up. But constant delays and executive-level buggery derailed all that. Andy got on the dole, Alex continued on, but with a gimpy leg, and the suits wrote it all off as a concept album wherein we see the inner working of an Martian's mind as it dreams. : / Bastards...
