As I wrote my little speculation, I kept thinking, "well, could things have happened any other way?" And, in the realm of "selling out"--wouldn't selling out have meant milking the LFC/Perpetual Dawn formula for all it was worth? Considering that there weren't really recognizable singles on anything until Orblivion... and, for crying out loud, how could a band that made "Pomme Fritz" and "Orbus Terrarum" *ever* sell out? We also have the underground consolation of having at least two different versions of Cydonia. Of course, there's a different threshold for selling out in the States, I think. There's no way the Orb would get to the top of the charts in any guise (and "U.F. Orb" got to no. 7 on the UK charts, right?), at least not in the States. But, then again, how do we explain Radiohead's recent success with a relatively difficult album to digest aurally? Prodigy's "Fat of the Land" (the last Electronic release to hit no. 1 in the states-- Fatboy Slim and Moby, while popular, haven't charted that high yet, I don't think) isn't a terribly difficult album, and, in a weird way, almost leads the way for the yo-metal (Limp Bizkit, etc.) that's been dominating recently. Want to see an interesting dissection of what it means to sell out? On our PBS station last night was a Frontline documentary called "The Merchants of Cool." Very scary stuff (www.pbs.org). - -- Justin Roby # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 May 2001 10:11:51 -0400 From: Justin Roby Subject: Re: (orb) moby (and cycles in techno releasing) Well, I understand that they're still performing (I know they performed after Emerson left). But then Aha! That's where you're wrong. The problem is this: most people are idiots. There are many MANY people in the world (I'd say the majority of them) who really are content to listen to the media created for them by the mega-conglomerate corporations who, at least in the US, control about 90% of all entertainment media. I'm talking about Rupert Murdoch, Aol Time Warner, Viacom, etc. Take viacom for instance. Viacom corp FULLY owns the following companies: Infinity Broadcasting, MTV, CBS, BET, Paramount Pictures, Nickalodeon, Blockbuster video, United Cinemas, UPN, VH1, Showtime, the movie channel, Pay Per View, Comedy Central, Kind World productions, Scribner Publishing, Simon & Schuster, Touchstone Publishing, Paramount Theme Parks, the entire star trek franchise, and the list goes on and on and on (see http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/cool/giants/viacom.html for the full list). Anyways, when you have a business model like this, a single small group of high powered execs can choose a group, promote its records on the radio stations it owns, show the videos on the TV stations it also owns, advertise its albums on its TV stations and include songs in its shows, offer all kinds of cross promotional deals (eg: blockbuster video gives you a FREE backstreet boys CD when you rent 3 videos). Look at the way Howard Stern gets cross-leveraged; the companies that syndicates his radio show, published his book, produced his movie, produces all of his merchandise are all owned by one mega conglomerate. And these companies are not doing this to bring you the best music or to open your mind to interesting musical ideas. They're carefully choosing groups that project a certain IMAGE that they're trying to sell. Take Britney Spears. She's a self professed virgin and all of these things, but flaunts her sexuality. And why is she famous? Because this nympho cum catholic school girl thing SELLS. Same thing goes for limp biscut. Someone at MTV decided they wanted this band to be famous, so now they are. Nuff said. Do you think its easy for your average idiot, who watches MTV and listens to CBS-affiliated radio stations, and watches hollywood movies to NOT be at least effected by these subtle advertisements? Especially if they live someplace where their choices of alternatively news/print/internet mediums are limited? But enough about my economics raving. :) Back to the original topic: You're better off in the long run accepting the fact that people are idiots and integrating it into your life rather than being angry at the fact and/or the people who demostrate its truth. Its not their fault they're idiots and you probably wont be able to do anything about it where you could see the results in your lifetime... In the end, the fact is, a lot of people like crappy pointless music. Even given the choice between the backstreet boys and the orb, having listened to both extensively, there are a lot of people in this country who would still listen to the backstreet boys... > something that is catchy and simple to play on all their ads. I guess in the > end things will work themselves out, or else cheesy pop will continue to > rule the masses... The latter. I think. What kind of website tries to sell a CD without giving the tracklisting? LFC apparently was on an earlier 14-track promo CD from VW ("Buy a car, get this lovely free CD"), even if it isn't on this one (not that we can tell...). My question is if Psychic TV's Roman P. made it onto either CD. I was shocked to hear it in the commercial, given PTV's history. I was surprised that VW used them (not to mention that they allowed the track to be used); and I'd be even more surprised if VW actually put them on either CD. CDDB has something listed that might be it; it has neither LFC nor Roman P. They're clever, and they always use great music. If it weren't for VW I wouldn't know who Nick Drake was. Not one of those ads made me think I need to buy a Beetle. Why? Because I don't let them -- I'm not that impressionable. Are they tapping into my subconcious? Maybe, but I've still got a 4-Runner parked in my driveway last time I checked. And how about the two new Nike ads with all the syncopatic dribbling? That's pure original creative genius -- it just also happens to be a Nike ad. I personally like my Adidas sneakers but Nike's commercials are way better -- and I *still* buy Adidas. How about the new Earthlink ads -- the editing in those is amazing as well. The same is true with The Gap. Now I can imagine probably every single person on this list thinks The Gap/Fisher Family is pure corporate crap in it's worst form, and I couldn't agree more; But their TV commercials are cool -- ok, at least original -- and often imitated. If you look past the product and look at the artistic elements of either VW, Nike, Earthlink or Gap's ads, they're cool -- What if the creative team at VW was hired to produce an Orb video? -- it would kick ass; and it's because I make that recognition that lets me appreciate the talents of the creative team hired by the corporate giant, and not give a rip about the product being shoved down my throat. Just like in music, music videos, TV game shows, TV Reality shows, movies, or any other profitable form of entertainment there are trend-setters and followers. A short list of trend-setters: Beck, Madonna, Dr. Dre, Who Want's to be a Millionaire?, The Real World, etc. You may not like anyone or anything I just mentioned, but at least give them credit for doing something new and having it work so well that everyone wants to copy it. And recognize that these entertainers are still around today for a reason -- they're smart -- they know what it takes to have a long career -- something a 'follower' can't comprehend (Madonna's choice to work with William Orbit is a perfect example of an intelligent businesswoman trying to stay one step ahead of the masses, the same is true about Dre's decision to produce Eminem). You see, I believe that in all things commercial, the people who do it 'first' should not be held accountable for the mass-REproduction of their clever ideas. When you do it first, it's not called selling out, it's called breaking out. Ford has been attempting to knock off VW's ads for awhile now and they all suck -- they can't do it -- and I hate them every time I see them. Why? Because Ford doesn't have the creative TALENT on staff to come up with a clever idea of their own. And hats off to VW for NOT using a Moby-type in their ads -- instead using lesser known artists like The Orb gives me respect for them. It makes me think "now there's an advertiser that really knows what's good and what's crap -- there's an advertiser who knows the difference between what's real and what's a xerox copy of innovative music." It's a shame that in electronic music the trend-setters tend not to be the bands that sell the most records, instead they are the bands that hold true to their art form, and try not to allow labels to infringe upon their creativity while *still* making a living. Then a follower comes along with no integrity and churns out an MTV'd version of the same stuff with a couple of pop hooks for pure profit. Or, sometimes, a trend-setter needs to put food on his family's plates and *has* to compromise. My definition of a sellout: Someone who allows gross-profit to compromise their artistic integrity. Did LX do this when he let VW use LFC? No. Why? Because the song didn't change one bit, he just re-sold it. Is that so bad? I'm sure he wasn't thinking "wow, this is gonna kick ass for a car commercial some day" when he was writing it. And at least he didn't mix in some sample of a bunch of tibetan monks chanting "I Love My Volkswagen" or something, which to me would be akin to Faith Hill singing a Pepsi hook -- and that, my friends, is truly selling out. As far as the Area: One festival goes, since it seems to be the root of this thread; I say whatever it takes to get a festival of electronic/hip hop musicians together in my hood is alright with me. What if it were a rave in a stinky warehouse and the lineup was just LX, Oakenfold, Carl Cox, and a handful of locals -- sans commercialization -- would you pay $75 for a ticket then? I've paid that much to see worse, and in worse venues than the Gorge (and no, the Gorge doesn't suck -- it's one of the most beautiful venues in the country, but don't take my word for it -- read any respectable review you can find (http://www.barstop.com/gorge/). I could care less if Intel's sponsoring it -- besides the quadraphonic sound thing in the DJ tent is a direct result of Intel's sponsorship. And maybe I can get a mouse mat or a blinking ball-point pen or something for free -- because I like 'free.' And I'm capable of going to a festival that has one or two sellout bands/artists and feel OK about myself, because the truth is I would still pay $75 to go to this festival if Moby or Intel weren't there, and if Moby's on while Oakenfold/LX/Cox is spinning, you won't find me at the main stage -- you'll find me where *I* want to be, because I choose not to let commercialization control me.
