Can someone please post a definitive list of such sites, as I have failed to find much, even searching through list archives. Of particular interest are the J. Cauty mix of "Once More" (why the hell is that one promo only? Thanks, Island/MCA or whoever....), as well as the Ultrabass mix of Perp. Dawn. As well as live stuff - I particularly liked the Orbvs Terrarvm tour. Next, if anyone has a vinyl copy of either of the above, or Live93 for that matter, that they are willing to sell - let me know. I find such a scenario hard to imagine, but being that I am a vinyl-only dj (nothing against cd djs; I just don't like messing with cds) perhaps there's some soul out there that for some reason has both formats and can part with one, or something.... Alternatively, if anyone has found a good source for rare/OOP stuff (other than EBay, which I do check periodically), let me know. May" Subject: (orb) bootlegged techniques A while back we were discussing bootlegging techniques and I remember thinking (and posting about as well) having some sort of transmitting device for bootlegging in a venue not down with the practice... Well, I have found such a device! I was looking for some way to hook up the DVD in my computer which is in my bedroom to the TV which is in my living room. I went to rat shack and pickup up this neat little transmitter/reciever component combo, cost me about $80 for the pair. They are about the size of two packs of cigarettes each and weigh nothing. They operate in the 2.4GHz range and have FM settings so you can choose one of 4 modulations with the least noise. They take either the triple RCA connectors (you see for instance on a playstation) or a coaxial cable and can transmit the data up to 100 feet (according to the box, could be more I haven't tested this). I wouldn't waste your breath trying to get a definitive list of FTP sites. As for Acetates [or dubplates] - the problem with them is that they don't last more than a couple of plays, BECAUSE of the way they are made i.e. with acetate lacquer. I know of people who have had their own pressed up just to play, but as I'm sure you'll know, after a few plays they are generally old hat anyway so it defeats the point of making a longer lasting record if you like. Feel free to give me my egg back when you like, but acetates are used to press up a small number of records to see what the pressing sounds like i.e. it may have sounded great at the master stage or in the studio, but what does it actually sound like on a record player? The question then, is what do you do with them? they tend to get pushed round to radio stations or the odd top flight DJ so they can give them a couple of spins **well** in advance of even white label/promo stage. I know this because I've got some, and one of them was sent to a Radio 1 DJ with a hand written sheet saying how many were pressed up etc and where the others went. Test pressings are what they sound like, test pressings to make sure the "proper" pressing i.e. not the [typically] one sided metal acetate plays ok. I've got loads of these and they are generally from one or two makers. After this, it's white label time or promo if the record company has some money and wants to make it official. The reason that mixes of Once More were not released is that they were done for DJ or club use only. The main purpose of [most] promos is to generate interest and give a track another angle or potential audience - how much club play would the radio version of once more got? not much. Phew....I'm not quite sure if you wanted to know that or not....the other question was getting hold of vinyl from a non Ebay source. I'm going to sound very unhelpful here - there are plenty of online sources for OOP or promo vinyl. Some are expensive, some are out of date, some are cheap but unorganised - I'm sure UK list members know who I'm talking about in each case ;-) Let me know, and I'll give you a list of the ones I use on a regular basis. Haha! I have just bought Cydonia! And as a whole I must say that I think it's the Orb doing a fantastic job! And yes, I got into their early stuff (being from the UK and all) before the 1995 onward stuff so I know what I am talking about! I think the album itself is very intertextual (Orbital also do this in 'The Altogether' by sampling the first track of the previous album in the third to last track, I think...) - lots of references to earlier tracks and the sampled they use when they play live, especially the FFWD "sample" in Terminus - I put the word "sample" in speech marks because it's kind of a reprise really isn't it? Nothing done before...but besides this I think some areas are great, the very beginning (first 10 seconds) of Once More could have afforded to be a minute or two longer as it's the most comforting and Orb like thing I've heard in ages, and really, I just wish they didn't do a vocal track. The lyrics are quite pretentious aren't they? Promis is one of my favourite tracks on there, I love how it keeps threatening drum'n base at you then rips the beat away from you, quite reminiscent of Delta MKII, with it's dipping of the drum n' bass in and out of water effect. I also like the lovely string sample they use, it give the whole thing that playfullness the Orb are good at, like in LFC for example. Ghostdancing I like anyway, mainly because I am just used to it from listening to the MP3 so much, chilled out and mixed well with Promis. The two go well together. The female vocal sounds to be in a similar vein to that of Orbital's work, which seems to go on throughout all the vocal tracks in the album. Turn it Down is another good track, you can see the reggae influences here, although the sample could have been truncated a little as I think it detracts from the rest of the track. Back in the UFOrb days, I don't think a sample lasted for longer than a few seconds bar Towers of Dub, but that was a different story. A few years ago the Orb were saying how Drum n' bass is the future of dance music, although this hasn't become entirely true, it's just one little aspect of dance. For the Orb it now seems a lot more prominent than their old ambient-house sound like in Majestic. Although some of the beats can be refreshing in this album it should be noted that maybe they should do something with a more constant and up-tempo dance beat like in earlier albums? I can think of several tracks on here, where they would be made more exciting and interesting to listen to had they been offered a house beat instead. Egnable is a just another example of the Orb's sense of humour. But Firestar is such a funky little number, you wish the obscurity of its presence persisted for another 10 minutes, it would easily have made best track on here purely for it's funk and sense of humour. It also seems to be going off in its own little vein of reference to 80's dance and electronic music, i.e. Kraftwerk. It you listen to a few big dance albums out now, especially Daft Punk and Orbital's latest albums, they refer heavily to older forms of Dance, Daft Punk use 80's funk and hip hop heavily and Orbital seem to go one step further and sound like early 90's dance music. The Orb seem to be doing the same with this track but in a stranger manner. A Mile Long Lump of Lard is another Fave of mine. I remember them playing this at The Royal Albert hall and it was monsterous. It just sounds like a gigantic monster coming to getcha. I can imagine it would suit a 2001 version game of Pac-man quite well. From here on the album starts to weaken, and also I haven't really paid as much attention to it as the earlier sections. Plum Island and Centuries both seem average as vocal tracks but they are too slow, they should have taken a leaf out of The Shamen's book, there was always optimism in their work, from Move Any Mountain, all the way up to Destination Eschaton - the pace was up-tempo and catchy yet interesting at the same time. Hamlet of Kings seems to let the album down somewhat, its as if they had way too many stock-sounds and just threw it all together. I like the magical sound they use but once again it's just a tad too slow and middle of the road, as far as dance music is concerned. If you're gonna do a chill out record, OOBE rather than Hamlet, please. The stop starting of the beats just makes the whole peice sound uneasy and incomplete. Something more subtle and otherworldly may have made the piece more interesting. I think the Orb go a bit silly when they try to make the soundtrack to a vocal song, and for gods sake stop stealing from Pomme Fritz! 1,1,1, is basically A Sticky Mess with a beat to it. Nice. EDM is ok but it doesn't seem to get anywhere or create anything other than an ok introduction to the next track... Thursday's Keeper is a good track. I think it's full of personality and reminds me a little of Are We Here by Orbital. Don't ask why, it just seems like a good, full, complete track and hence, is satisfying to listen to as far as beats are concerned. It also highlights the Orb's excellence at the manipulation of sound, samples and stereo and the development of a catchy riff, an interesting amalgamation of guitar and drum n' bnass. And here we go....back to the beginning for Terminus ladies and gentlemen... Anyway, let me know what you think. Take care guys... Anyway, my name's Susan (call me Spu), and I'm a fledling orb fan, having heard one or two of their songs b4 but never much checking them ou= t until a friend made me a tape about a year ago, and I've been hooked sinc= e! Saw the shows recetly in Detroit (where I'm from) and Toronto. = Anyway, I wanted to add my 2 cents to some questions I saw others had thi= s morning. = Re badorb: As far as I knew, we were supposed to be able to order as of yesterday, but I've had no luck. Someone asked had anyone heard anything= from Garphoo - does this mean you are having similar problems? Re Once More mixes: I was able to find the 3 12" promos fairly cheaply, a= nd they have the mixes you're looking for. The brown one has ft explores sa= tan, and the blue one has scourge of the earth. I got the brown at a local st= ore, and the blue and green on ebay.
