Thanks to those who answered me about Area One. I bought my expensive ticket a couple of days ago. Finally- ORB- 6 years after the last time they swung by these parts. Has anyone else noticed the clothing line (I think for girls only) called Orb? They have a nice Orb logo. Tempting, but too expensive. I went to Autechre last night. I was astounding. There were no lights (except for the glare from the Powerbooks), but the music was really durn good. The place did thin a bit, but nowhere near as much as the last time they were here (1998). Last time it was really sparse and disjointed (in a good way) this time is was really layered and actually pretty rhythmic. I have heard they've been playing very different sets from city to city. I know Gavin taped the show in Chicago (apparently not so hot), I hope someone up here taped this one. I never have so I figured I would mess up any attempts- unless you count the call I made to my answering machine (I did record about 2 minutes). It was really cool. They just announced Mouse on Mars here next month. That means June has Tortoise, Mogwai, Mouse on Mars and Radiohead, July has Air and August has The Orb. I almost feel like I live in a real city! Information! While making the rounds last weekend saw a few items that might be of interest. Stopped at Aron's in LA. They had 8 to 10 copies of "Cydonia" in the used/promo bin priced at 10.99 and a couple priced at 9.99 each. So I would agree here with Chris (earlier post) that they can be a bit overpriced on some items, but it's still better than full price. They also have Dr. Alex Patterson's "Journey Into Paradise" (new CD section) for 19.99, and "Cydonia" vinyl for I believe 27.99 (there were about 5 copies). Tower in Anaheim and Costa Mesa both have 12" copies of "Once More" for 8.99 which isn't that bad of a price. These are regular, not promo copies. Regarding the "Journey Into Paradise" mix CD. I have an in-house pre-release cdr promo that doesn't give much info. Could someone send along any mix info that might be on the regular copy? Seems like the Killing Joke track is probably a Orb Mix. I'm not following any order here, but since I read lots and LOTS of SF reviews, here's mine. Happy reading, it was quite a night. After reading through all these reviews of the Orb's SF gig, I find it odd with as many listees that were there that I didn't meet any of you. Where were you all? I did meet up with a taper friend John Ricci a friend of his by the name of Cole, and ex-listee Cory Kilcullen (taper of the La Luna 8/13/97 show). Cory flew down from Portland for the show and we met up in front of the Virgin Megastore a few blocks away. John decided to show me around a bit before stopping off for dinner at this pizza joint inside of some strange nightclub just down the street from the Maritime Hall. After an extended dinner break due to the incompetence of the man who took our order, we walked back to the Maritime Hall. We hung out in front of the venue trying to sell off our extra tickets since I no longer needed one - Muzzer (Orb tour manager) gave me an all access pass a few gigs earlier! I got inside and walked around the venue a bit to scope out the scene. Autolump was just starting his set, so I headed back stage to say hello to Muzzer, LX, Simon, and Witchy. I saw Alex (visuals guy) on the way in and he warned me about LX's somber mood due to the news about his brother. Shortly after, LX walked out of the green room, a little teary eyed. I didn't know what to say to him, so I just tapped my heart with my fist and gave him the peace knuckles as he walked by. Upon entering the green room, I saw Simon and Witchy and chatted with them a bit and watched the commotion of the venue's staff as they refilled the pitchers of warm beer on the snackbar. a few minutes later, Fil enters the room after completing his set and sits down to relax as LX does his DJ set. We talk about how far of a drive SF is from Denver, have a few drinks, then I head out into the hall with intentions of taping Witchman's set. The crowd in the hall continues to grow in size, making my trek to the center harder and harder. Witchman begins before I get a chance to setup my rig, then I get stuck in the crowd by a group of loud talkers. I finally break free, and notice that my record level is too low and the input is clipping bad, so I give up and stop the tape. I meet up with my friends in the back by the bar, and tell them that I'm not particularly fond of the venue's acoustics and crowd noise. I decide to head upstairs to the soundboard area, hoping I can have the same luck at getting an open area to record as I did in Denver. No luck, for some venue tech guy told me they were having trouble with the lighting and needed the area to move around in. I head back downstairs and try to find an acceptable spot on the floor. Witchman's halfway through his set at this point, and the crowd's reaction is mixed. One thing unique about this performance is that his visuals were projected onto the side walls of the hall in addition to the 2 screens on stage. I did notice that he used some different sample placement during this set too, but nothing to make this night's performance stand out. I weezle my way close to the center point of the hall and have Cole, Cory and John stand behind me. Cole pulls out his Zippo and a Bic lighter, and attaches a pipe to the bottom of the zippo. "This is my James Bond bowl. Wanna hit?" Awesome. John and/or Cory does a beer run (1 cup at a time, venue rule) then within a few minutes, the Orb finally take the stage. I watch as LX comes out on stage to see the crowd cheer quite loudly. Witchman takes his place by the mixing desk, and Fil ducks down by the ADAT machine. I started rolling tape 5 mins prior to that beginning tune they play before LX spins the Apocalypse Now version of "The End" to make sure I get everything. Tonight I pay close attention to LX to see if his emotions from earlier could be seen. The rooster sample comes in and the crowd starts cheering madly and LX raises his hands into the air to greet the audience as the Orb star starts to rotate on the scren behind him. When "The End" can be heard, the crowd reacts with a mixture of laughter and cheering, but mostly people saying "This is the Doors" - really? . "And all the children are insane..." The sound of the hellicopter then takes over, and sounds as if it's flying around the room thanks to Patrick's (Orb's soundman) quadrophonic mixing techniques. As the anticipation starts growing to greater levels, the rumble of the bass of Mile Long Lump Of Lard gets greater and greater in volume. "You can feel the flash, you can feel the heat" I quickly gaze from left to right, noticing that everybody's attention is directed at the stage with wide eyes, waiting for the beat to kick in. When it does, the eminator lights start shining onto the crowd, and the once stable group is now cheering and dancing, or more appropriately "Going mad". Tonights version is followed by a country tune LX spins and the whole place starts clapping and yee-hawing as if it's a ho-down. Promis kicks in and Witchy mixes the string section in and out a bit more than I remember hearing from the prior shows. Due to the size of the Maritime hall, the quadrophonic mix can be heard very well. The song of the Flying Nuns provides the next segue into Turn It Down, as Simon comes onto stage and takes control of the mixing desk from Witchy. LX mixes some spoken word samples and rhythms ontop of of Simon's mix, manipulating the Chaos Pad with the greatest of ease. As the rhythm and bassline stays balanced, the guitar riff switches from channel to channel at a dizzying speed. As the beat conitnues on, LX then reverses it and stops it dead, starting Egnable and playing it in short as Witchy re-enters the stage and Simon moves to his Bass stack for Blue Room. At center stage, the giant 12 foot Orb becomes illuminated by a projector from the soundboard with green and blue waveforms. Just below, Simon straps on his bass, bobs his head in rhythm, keeping a watchful eye on Witchy waiting for the signal to begin. LX plays samples from Tino's Breaks, the movie Dark Star, South Park, along with mixing in extra vocals from Mad Professor's "The Creator". The crod approves. As Blue Room fades out, FFWD's "Hempire" fades in, then gets bumped by a short clip of Firestar. just as things start to get quiet , the sound of Dueling Banjos fills the air, along with the vocals that make up the live version of Perpetual Dawn. As the beat kicks up, the crowd begins to jump in rhythm. Simon then kicks in the recognizeable bassline to a very loud cheer from the crowd and the place is lit up brightly by the Orb's commanding light gear. Just as the momentum kicks up, it mellows down to sound of a chanting sample until there's nothing left except the highhat, then everything kicks back in all at once, lead off by Simon's hand sliding down the neck of his bass. As Perpetual Dawn ends, Witchy walks off stage, followed by Simon after placing his bass back on the stand. In the meantime LX cues up the Scrounge The Earth mix of Once More (the only show of the tour with this mix), paces back and forth, then rips off his headphones and slams them on the floor and walks offstage. The anxeity I felt as the show started was all but gone, until this happened. Was he calling it quits for the night? It seemed like it took forever for him to come back out, but he did as the sound of A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain could be heard. Withcman came back out and walked to the mixer, LX then walked over to Witchman, said something to him, and then embraced each other in a hug. Terminus followed, and the performance carried on as if it were all planned. LX mixed a bit of FFWD's "Can Of Bliss" and a rhythm from what sounds to be a De La Soul record (for a lack of better decription). Simon re-enters the stage, straps on his bass and tunes it just as Fil and Witchy signal each other the go ahead and Towers Of Dub starts. Submerged in the background, the sound of the long form of A Huge Ever Growing Brain can be heard, followed by sonar, a telephone ringing, dogs barking, and a harmonica. The end part seems to carry on for a while as Simon strums away without error. As Dub ends, LX follows up with S.E.Berlin's "Barbie Girl", taking us into Outlands. As soon as the familiar tone is recognized by the crowd, they make it known loud and clear. On tonight's version, Witchman mixed it really well, droping in and out different rhythms flawlessly. LX adds samples from 2001 on top of the mix, and then ends it with an echoed delay, but continuing with the 2001 sound clips. "Dave, this conversation can serve no purpse any longer". Simon re-enters the stage for the next track, grabbing LX's attention on the way to the bass stack. the sound of a horse galloping shows off the quadrophonic mix again, and the sound of Little Fluffy Clouds pierces the air. Witchy plays around with the bass drum, turning it on and off and grimmacing at the crowd as if he's toying with the dancers. This doesn't stop the masses from moving, for this is the song that many of the concertgoers probably came to hear. (I'm sure a periodical mentioned this track as their signature song as promotion of tonight's show) LFC comes to an end, and more samples from Apocalypse Now can be heard, this time of Marlon Brando. The crowd's cheering hits the loudest point of the night in appreciation. Hamlet Of Kings comes on and the Orb leaves the stage again (as they have for this song the whole tour). LX comes back out and plays a few samples over top the tail end of it "Tommorrow's forecast calls for mostly Sunday, followed by Thursday" Simon comes back out to do the mixing of EDM, giving LX a hug on the way to the desk. At the beginning LX plays the 911 sample of the emergency call about the Bay Bridge collapsing. I find this an odd sample to use, for I'm sure there was people affected by that disaster in the crowd... Between EDM and Thursday's keeper, LX spins something I don't recognize, and Witchy comes back out on stage, holding his camcorder and videotaping the audience. He has the camera hooked upto the videoscreens so the crowd can see the footage, filming from right to left, across the balcony, then sets it down to mix the last song. As the "Charge" horn blast can be heard, LX holds up two fingers above his head with one hand and waving the other behind him like the horns and tail of a bull and dances around the stage. As they close out the show Witchman waves goodbye, LX spins a song other than Mr. Sandman - sonething that sounds like an auctioneer over top of a drumbeat and exits the stage. The crowd stands around, cheering and hoping for them to come back out on stage, but as usual no encore. Tonight's set duration 1 hr 45 min. Total time taped 1 hr 58 min The recording came out good, but isn't he best tape from the tour. The crowd noise level is fair, the music sounds a bit distant, but the performance was great. After the gig ends, I notice that John is no longer with us. He apparently left early because he was too tireds to stay for the entire show (wuss). As the mass of people work their way toward the door, I stay behind hoping to be identified by some listees, and search the floor of a Maritime Hall-style ticket stub. I have better luck coming across the latter, prefering the artistic look over Tickets.com's generic blush and yellow format. I tell Cory and Cole that I want to go back stage and chat with the crew for a little while and I proceed back to the green room. As I get there, I notice a bunch of people sitting around outside as if they're waiting for the chance to meet LX & co. and for some rason they look vaguely familiar to me too. I knock on the door and ask Muzzer if it's ok to enter, and he opens up the door. LX is sitting on 1 couch, Simon and Alex on another. The mood in the room is a little tense because of LX's bad news. Patrick (being the perfectionist he is) is his usual bitter self and is standing in the doorway of the adjacent office clutching a beer. As Muzzer opens up the door the people sitting outside the greenroom enter, and turn out to be Meat Beat Manifesto/Tino's Breaks members Jack Dangers, Lynn Farmer, and Mike Powell. Mike comes over by me and we begin talking about their MTV interview that I remembered seeing him on from years back. Shortly after a few more guys enter the room, A dreadlocked guy named Brian I remember seeing at one or more of the Florida's shows being one of them. As the joints are being passed around the room, Jack and LX talk like old fiends, remembering tales from their 1996 tour together. I mention that I saw them on that tour at the Metro, and LX asks if I have that one on tape. I smile and nod, to which he replies "Figures." He tells Jack that I've been to every show on the tour, which gets a wide-eyed look from Jack. I asked him why Meat Beat isn't playing Coachella, and he replies "I Dunno. We weren't invited." Meanwhile dreadlocked Brian is showing Mike his recorder and MDs, talking about taping shows. Mike mentions to Brian that he's got a good setup, but then I pull out my DAT... Mike tells me about Tino's Breaks #5 is now out, and that 1 & 2 will be on cd soon (just so you all know). I say goodbye to Mike, on the way out compliment Jack and Lynn on Meat Beat's work, tell the Orb crew "See you tomorrow", and Muzzer confirms that I'm on the Coachella guest list. As I leave the green room and backstage area, one of the hippie-ish Maritime Hall owners says to me "Thanks for coming to the Maritime Hall. I hope you enjoyed it here! Please book with us again!" I leave smiling and meet up with Cory and Cole, who thankfully waited for my return and didn't threaten me for being gone too long. As I'm giving them the details of what happened, Fil, David (Orb light guy) and a bunch of Maritime Hall guys are loading up the Orb bus. Just down the street, A porsche runs the red light and broadsides a VW Jetta, rendering it immobile (unrelated I know, but it's part of the night). The Porsche guy gets out, says something, gets back in and drives off. HIT AND RUN! I drive them to their car, drop them off, say good night and head for LA at 3 am. I have a 5-6 hour drive ahead of me which I'm not looking forward to since I'm not in the right state of mind, and am quite tired, but I don't stray from my plan to get to LA to pick up my friend and head to Coachella...
