No doubt - me too - but does money actually get to the artist for "promo only" releases? That is where my philosophical objection to copies lies - - IF the material is IN PRINT (not used version that you are lucky to find and which artist doesn't get money for anyway) then you have no business having a copy. If out of print, unobtainable, and the record company doesn't see fit to make it so - then copyright law in that case is unfair and unrealistic - a copy is entirely justified. Just like the game companies throw fits about MAME roms - well, why don't they release them (as Williams did though I haven't been able to find it)!? > am i showing my age here? or is everyone just looking for a version to play > on their computers at work? am i the only one who finds the immediate > gratification of an MP3 less satisfying than a successful score at my local > shops? Hi Rachel. =) I've found this to be a fascinating thread, since, as an aspiring recording artist, I think about this subject quite a bit. I'd say you're not showing your age necessarily, but rather a certain disposition toward interacting with music. As the MP3 revolution has abundantly pointed out, there's no essential reason that music has to be tied to a physical medium or therefore package. It is not unreasonable for listeners to appreciate music a la carte, as it were. But since until now music has been tied to a physical package, artists have taken advantage of that fact to present visual art and text to complement the music. Having the fetishistic approach to music that I do, I tend to think of an album that I care about as "incomplete" without this original packaging, and purchasing the CD provides can provide an important interaction with the artist and/or music business. But I realize that this is just a mindset, since for albums that I don't care so much about I think little of possessing MP3s. However, I think that the most ethical use of MP3s is on a "try before you buy" basis, since music is one of the few products that does not intrinsically permit consumers to interact with it before purchasing. Essentially, I'm not too worried about whether packaging ultimately goes out of style. What is a more pressing issue, in my opinion, is how professional musicians get paid when music is extracted from medium. I've also heard of artists (e.g. Muslimgauze) making public note of which of their recordings are out of print, and thereby giving fans license to freely duplicate and share them. Makes good sense to me. On a related note, I'm intending to convert my recording of Banco de Gaia's /Freeform Flutes and Fading Tibetans/ to MP3 and make it available to y'all, but first wanted to check if any of you might have a better quality recording? Mine is from a cassette of the unknownth-generation and has some EQ issues, though it sounds through a wee soundblaster. I hope Toby doesn't mind. I'll be the first in line if he reissues it. Good heavens, I do ramble on. - -=Seofon _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 May 2001 18:58:56 -0400 From: "mark schieldrop" Subject: RE: (orb) Re: orb + irc > You guys have a proper botnet, etc? > > ----- > > not currently, but I can get mine back up if there's any interest... And don't forget - compressed audio is NOT high >fidelity! Records still sound better than CDs - and MP3 isn't even in >the ball park. Hang on! This depends strongly upon the bitrate, my friend. 256kbits encoding using the newest version of lame sounds spotless every time, if given a good source. If you give it crap, you'll just get crap back! :) If you're using any other encoder, then you need to get off your arse and grab lame and razorlame NOW. Even the newest versions of the Fraunhofer codec suck badly by comparison (especially if you're trying to go for best quality), and to think fhg charge a few hundred smackers for it, whereas lame is free! I don't even want to begin to think about how the open, dynamically wide recordings of Adventures Beyond... would sound using fhg's encoders even at 192kbits. Bleargh. And as for rips from vinyl... forget it. Use Lame or you'll get poor results. Those of you that are aware of the masking process that mp3s employ should agree that they, when using these higher bitrates, are a much more efficient way of storing high-quality audio than uncompressed audio because - - with due care taken - you're left with only what you _need_ to hear. All that other - unneeded - information is discarded. MPEG+ does an even better job, and is just as free (check www.maz-sound.com). As for records sounding better than CDs: not necessarily. A good deck & cart (head straight for technics and ortofon) may well give nice and warm analogue reproduction, but it is still a vastly inferior medium to CDs (think about what's involved in getting the audio from the platter to your amp, and compare it with the digital signal path of CD). Despite this, I love the sound of vinyl, but appreciate the accurate reproduction compact discs give. So I think I'm darn lucky to have good players for both. Need proof to back up both issues? Go here: http://www.r3mix.net - links to lame+razorlame are on the links page. Sorry by the way, I just needed to get this off my chest. Too many people - - including many pro's in the industry - decry mp3s for being lossy. The thing is, they aren't _that_ lossy if you know how to tame em! :) So those of you copying down your Once More vinyl (I haven't touched mine at all, personally), should heed the advice here if you want to create good mp3s from them. NOT ONCE DID I SAY "such and such sounded shite." I love my vinyl thankyou - if I can grab mp3s of releases, then I can by the vinyl and never have to touch it. It becomes an investment. CDs can be just the same! Laerm, you've just proven yourself to be more ignorant than I am. You didn't READ my post, did you? It boils down to: MP3s sound fine if you use lame at 256kbits. Vinyl may be outdated - but it still usually sounds great. CDs are a much more accurate audio media and therefore can sound much "cleaner," and "flatter" but aren't as warm as a good bit of vinyl. But even so, that doesn't mean they sound bad (if they do then it's the fault of the person who recorded/mastered it). Again, NOT ONCE DID I SAY "such and such didn't sound good." And I think you'll find I wasn't arguing either. Shock horror, back on topic (ish): the Cydonia v1 mp3s. I think it was turn it down, or ralf, or somewhere halfway through the album where one part in particular was affected by the "mp3-warble." I _then_ found out that the mp3s were made with realjukebox. Oh dear - this explains everything. You see if the person who encoded it had used lame at similar settings, it most likely would have sounded fine... doesn't bother me though, it's a top album no matter what. Just an observation - ok? >the facts are: >for the audiophiles, cd (and definitely mp3) won't cut it, as they're not >reproducing the full range of frequencies. >for other folk, mp3 and cd may be just fine. Ah, audiophiles do not necessarily equal a muso or pro engineer. The former looks for valve amps to "warm up" his sound, man (and is usually a stuck up bastiche with too much cash ;). The latter just wants gear that reproduces as accurate a sound as poss, and will last for more than a few years. I want to hear what my synths really sound like - thank you very much. >cd and mp3 do not reproduce the full range of frequencies, so technically >they are imperfect. That doesn't mean that they "don't sound good" though eh? You don't need to reproduce the full range of frequencies - fer christsakes we usually can't hear above 20kHz anyway, so there's little need to keep much above it (I'd argue for up to 22kHz to be safe). Because of this, mp3 and CD are more than enough. Especially now as CD-R storage is so damned affordable. Micah, please don't make a habit of jumping the gun like this. Reminds me in places of the Grid's Flotation and the orb remix of Material/Mantra with the Indian drum type things. Sort of dubby and low tempo with a nice bass line and snare drum on. Couple of breaks drop in and out and then play backwards and stuff. Whole thing sounds like it was recorded underwater. Noticed myself nodding along whilst reading a book, so can't be that bad ;-) # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info orb" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email orb@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 May 2001 16:12:21 +0100 (BST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Smiley?= Subject: (orb) ORBULLETIN: ORB DATES # This is an Orb announcement from the ORBULLETINS mailing list. It's ok, not particulary outstanding, but ok. nope - that's the coldcut mix. the orb mix is the first of the two tracks on the other side. not bad, but nothing earth-shattering... l8rs. - --- Smiley ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
